South Africa and Cape Verde Islands draw at Soccer City

Posted: 19 January 2013 Time: 17:29

The opening match of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations between South Africa and Cape Verde Islands at Soccer City was one to forget as it finished in a goalless draw.

In was a game the capacity crowd would want to forget as soon as possible as it lacked any quality, with neither side being able to string together meaningful passes or create much in terms of scoring chances.

The hosts had an early chance to take the lead – Thuso Phala won a free-kick on the right and Siphiwe Tshabalala whipped in a curling effort, but Bernard Parker could not steer his near-post header on target.

On 13 minutes there was another chance for Bafana when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area, but Shabba’s shot was a tame one and went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Vozinha.

Then the half’s best chance. South Africa’s shaky defence was found out prior to the tournament, and it showed no signs of improvement when Babanco’s through-ball put Platini one-on-one with Itumeleng Khune, but he dragged his shot woefully wide.

Nerves were showing on both sides and chances were few and far between as a result of misplaced passes and the wet conditions, but Cape Verde had one more opportunity towards the end of the half after Bafana failed to deal with a corner, but Mendes fired over from a tight angle.

Lerato Chabangu came on for Kagisho Dikgacoi at the start of the second half, and he immediately tried to make an impact with an audacious bicycle kick, but the connection was poor.

Then, on 58 minutes, the closest Bafana came to a goal. Lehlohonolo Majoro ran onto a long ball and cut inside to feed Parker. The ball was taken off his feet but fell to Tshabalala, but his shot was bravely saved by the keeper.

The game then descended into a scrap of note as both teams showed a lack of quality and ability to adapt to the wet conditions, but Cape Verde did have one more good opportunity with 15 minutes to go. Some more poor defending allowed Heldon with a diving header, but Khune managed to tip the ball around the corner.

Thabo Matlaba had one last effort towards the end of the match when he was teed up by Chabangu, but it was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Khumalo headed over – a great chance missed yet again.

Ok, the 2 fullbacks provided nothing going 4wad, 1 of them lost a lot of posession. Centre backs, this area needs urgent att the both use power, we need someone with brains there 2 start attacks not lento bayenzayo hoofing the ball, Shabba dead, Dikgacoi a huge liability. Upfronf absolutely no supply 4 these guys, not a single cross from fullback & wingers. It's a setback but definately not a trainsmash!

Please Champ, do not dare compare The CV Chef with Gordon. I take off my hat to The CV Chef

Just think about it.... The CV Chef selects Shabba, Parker and Majoro week in and week out and he is now laying on top of the PSL log. Last season VV couldn't win a single trophy with these cows. The CV Chef should be rewarded for recycling cows and producing results. It's like going with a knife to gun fight and still kill one or two guys,

Gordon could not motive these cows turn this game upside down.

Forgive me Buccaneers for praising the Chef but I'm sure you understand my point.

Gorden is taking us no where. Even Sello Chokwe could have done better. Why replace Shaba with Serero and Majoro with unfit Mphela??
Poor subs. It's f.u.cken painful to players like Tokelo not given a run.
PHALA is a tried and tested cow, yet our GI continues to play this cow.
The less said about Thabo the better.

Hahahahaha lol I also wanna know. I saw Zebras looking blue after the match. What did they expect kanti?

In previous interviews, Cape Verde said, “Going to Afcon is like winning the actual tournament for us.”

Even they were shocked to have qualified but Gordon can't outsmart an air craft traffic officer.

Hehehe in Gordon we believe

Yes I am a Khosi 100% but is Chabangu better than Manyisa and May? I don't think so. There was absolutely no supply for Major to do his magic. Ngcongca is a COW, Matlaba is trying, Phala always running without results. Khumalo, if we can take him off we will do well, he is a Donkey.

May mahlangu ahould have started. Iv been advocating for his inclusion in the lineup for good reason.he is highly mobile ,passes the ball well and links with players well . We need someone whol successfuly link with serero and parker OH HOW I MISS STEVEN PIENAAR.. The truth is aside from serero, patosi, claasen and to sum degree pienaar we dont have high class attacking midfielders. whoever was booing majoro and mphela is obviously a retarded gorilla who doesnt know football. Without adequate attacking midfielders wel struggle greatly. Drunkard chabangu and phala are garbage and not good enough for international football....
