Norway beat South Africa 1-0 at Cape Town Stadium

Posted: 8 January 2013 Time: 22:25

South Africa's build-up to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations were dealt a huge blow following a 1-0 friendly defeat to Norway at Cape Town Stadium.

Tarik Elyounoussi scored the match’s only goal in the first half, but the hosts would be disappointed by the number of chances they missed.

Bafana tested the Norwegian backline for the first time in the 16th minute when Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s visionary pass found Katlego Mphela. The Sundowns striker expertly turned his defender, but his shot was weak and goalkeeper Rune Almenning Jarstein saved with his feet.

Nine minutes later the visitors threatened the hosts’ defence when Bjorn Helge Riise fired a stinging shot from outside of the box which Itumeleng Khune parried.

Mphela was again denied by Jarstein when his header was parried away for a corner in the 36 minute – just a few seconds after Thuso Phala’s mesmerising run almost found the Sundowns man on the goalline.

But the Cape Town Stadium would go into silence when the Norwegians took the lead through some individual skill and an expert finish from Elyounoussi, who beat two defenders before firing an unstoppable shot past Itumeleng Khune.

In the 55th minute the South Africans were denied an equaliser when a counter-attack led by Phala nearly came to fruition. He released Tokelo Rantie, whose shot was saved by the keeper from close range. The rebound fell to Phala, but his effort was cleared off the line.

In the 83rd minute Phala - who had been a menace for the visiting defence in the second half - could only blast his shot over the bar from close range after Rantie’s initial shot was saved by the goalie.

So the 35 000 fans at Cape Town Stadium go home unhappy, but Gordon Igesund will take heart from the chances created – and hope the goals will come in Saturday’s friendly against Algeria at Orlando Stadium.

Bafana line-up against Norway: Itumeleng Khune, Tshepo Masilela, Bongani Khumalo, Siyabonga Sangweni, Anele Ngcongca (Lehlohonolo Majoro 87), Lerato Chabangu (Bernard Parker 53), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Kagisho Dikgacoi (May Mahlangu 69), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Thulani Serero 56), Thuso Phala, Katlego Mphela (Tokelo Rantie 46)

Surely, surely, surely I really fear for the worst with Sangweni at the back. The guy has taken his costly club blunders to the national team. Igesund has blundered big time by not making enough cover for that central defense position.

Look at Masilela, the guy has been out injured for a very long time but he is as solid as rock. As for Digakoi the guy is just a useless fat cow who just strut aimlessly around the pitch. Surely Andile Jali could do a better job in that position. Lerato Chabangu is also proving that he is just good at club level and nothing more.

Otherwise I still believe that the boys will do us proud in Afcon.

Zebra tendencies have infected the Mphelas, Sereros and Thuso Phalas of this joke of a mqwebu team and they were trying to score with tap-ins.

I can't blame them though; Yeye was the first who tried a tap-in "shot" shortly before Norway scored and jumped up & down hystericaly like a chimpanzee as if boycotting its release from the zoo after being told "you're going back to the wild." Mncim...

Thank God for Zille in keeping this Afcon away from my city of Cape Town!

Eintlik, now I know why Adebayor was reluctant to come to SA. I mean, which tourist would want to visit a place just to witness its citizens die of heart failure in watching Bafana BaChimps? Mncim. Nami I'd stay away for safety purposes!

'BELIEVE' in Bafana BaChimps at your own heart's peril!

Up The Bucs.... #FriendsOfNorway

What has transpired from the game: Goalkeeper, had a quite game, nothing coming his way, extra extra beautifuls passes from from the passing master, completed more passes than Dikgacoi. Defence; Anele, had a low game, no attacking, dead second half. Masilela; for a person who just came from the injury had a solid game and assisted a lot in attack. Was nervous. First few minutes but came ryt as the game progress. Sangweni; what can I say, a cow, pure cow, that rat conceded the first goal. Khumalo; to me Khumalo had an improved game. Covered for Masilela when gone for attack. But caught ball watching with Sangweni for the goal. Yeye; what can I say, a sprinkler would be jealous, sprinkling passes all over the pitch. Was linking the play, well played, my man of the match. Thuso Phala; a star performance but was guilty of missing good chances. Created a lot of scoring chances. He was superb too.Chabangu; he always proves that the stage is too big for him. He is a headless chicken like Myessie. Katlego Mphela; I will say, we were a little unfair to him, he is a good striker, he is a b rusty but if he had more time on the picth he would have scored. Shabba; I will say he had a normal game. Shabba does not run at the defenders anymore as much as we will lyk. But his decision making put him head and and shoulder above the rest. If he is in the good position he will take a a correct decision. He does not offload the ball. He completes passes. Lyk Mphela I would have lyked him to stay a lil longer. He is the only left winger. Serero; tried too much, uilty of holding the ball for too long. But promising in attack. Whatcha all say

Honestly speaking, when we told the Zebras that GI should get rid of all the tired and tested, we were called names. There are players in the squad who have over 60 caps and nothing to show for it. So why keep such players? Sangweni slipped as anyone else can slip but the goal was not scored directly from that slip, where were other players? We also told you about KG & Shabba and we were called names. I see GI is also using the same system that failed Pitso, playing with one striker. Once again I put my head on the block these team will not go past the group stages.

Sangweni, indeed witchcraft even works on white people (He continues bewitch SA coaches to be in the squad)

Phala is trying too hard to impress the biggest soccer brand in the continent (Kaizer Chiefs)

All KAIZER CHIEFS players were superb

Khumalo only GOOD ENGLISH is saving him.

To ALL 92% KC fans who were at CT Stadium today you were superb. For that Mr Phira clown, once a PIRATE forever an ILLITERATE.

I feel sorry for Sangweni, the poor guy does not have cover in this Swazi boy (Khumalo). GI must swallow his pride and replace Shabangu with a productive player. Digacio is finish too much astray passes. Yeye can play with this overated Serero, this boy is immature football wise. Goodluck on AFCON bring it home.

Major majoro jst needs 15min to find da bck of da net yet gordon introduced him soo late. The king of tap ins should be introduced earliar.

If you did watch the game properly masilela was no where to be seen as the goal scored but only exposing the center backs as you saw sangweni tried with all he have to mark that guy unfortunately he was skinned and only a COW khumalo was the cover up and he was skinned too and Yeye was ball watching and masilela nowhere to be seen and khune had no chance even though it was a bit far softy shot. So only a fool can only blame sangweni

Khumalo n Yeye ball watched after we re-grouped.

Yeye gives possession cheaply that's why Jali always get the better of him.

Sangweni is becoming a COW day by day, Matoho was supposed to be called to do the job. If it was not for Sangweni, the game was going to end 0-0, yes we were supposed to score but 0-0 was the worst score we deserved in this match. Sangweni just decided to make it 1-0, talking about a liability in a team.

I am not one of the people that celebrates mediocrity but I think our movement on the ball was great to watch. I have always regarded Phala as one of the worst COWS in PSL, but today he proved me wrong with great movements on the ball something he has never done with all the chances he had while playing for Chiefs.

I am not one of GI fans from the day he was appointed by the media, but I can't crucify him for this match. It was up to the players to score goals in this match, but I believe more time with Mphela and Majoro on the park was gonna get us some goals.

Sangweni must be relegated to a shoe shiners, FULLSTOP. He must join Manyisa and the rest nxa useless.
