Norway beat South Africa 1-0 at Cape Town Stadium

Posted: 8 January 2013 Time: 22:25

South Africa's build-up to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations were dealt a huge blow following a 1-0 friendly defeat to Norway at Cape Town Stadium.

Tarik Elyounoussi scored the match’s only goal in the first half, but the hosts would be disappointed by the number of chances they missed.

Bafana tested the Norwegian backline for the first time in the 16th minute when Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s visionary pass found Katlego Mphela. The Sundowns striker expertly turned his defender, but his shot was weak and goalkeeper Rune Almenning Jarstein saved with his feet.

Nine minutes later the visitors threatened the hosts’ defence when Bjorn Helge Riise fired a stinging shot from outside of the box which Itumeleng Khune parried.

Mphela was again denied by Jarstein when his header was parried away for a corner in the 36 minute – just a few seconds after Thuso Phala’s mesmerising run almost found the Sundowns man on the goalline.

But the Cape Town Stadium would go into silence when the Norwegians took the lead through some individual skill and an expert finish from Elyounoussi, who beat two defenders before firing an unstoppable shot past Itumeleng Khune.

In the 55th minute the South Africans were denied an equaliser when a counter-attack led by Phala nearly came to fruition. He released Tokelo Rantie, whose shot was saved by the keeper from close range. The rebound fell to Phala, but his effort was cleared off the line.

In the 83rd minute Phala - who had been a menace for the visiting defence in the second half - could only blast his shot over the bar from close range after Rantie’s initial shot was saved by the goalie.

So the 35 000 fans at Cape Town Stadium go home unhappy, but Gordon Igesund will take heart from the chances created – and hope the goals will come in Saturday’s friendly against Algeria at Orlando Stadium.

Bafana line-up against Norway: Itumeleng Khune, Tshepo Masilela, Bongani Khumalo, Siyabonga Sangweni, Anele Ngcongca (Lehlohonolo Majoro 87), Lerato Chabangu (Bernard Parker 53), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Kagisho Dikgacoi (May Mahlangu 69), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Thulani Serero 56), Thuso Phala, Katlego Mphela (Tokelo Rantie 46)

i'm not sure about the strategy for this match, i mean did our playas understand wat they were suppose to do... we had possession on a stand still, things only changed second half afta serero came in... We lacked forward movement and we gave away balls with our wayward long passes... Mphela, Shabba, Lerato, Yeye were quite lost... At the back we lack leadership, i dont think bongani did his job on that part... Kodwa Through and Through I support my country, let this be a lesson learnt

Bongane Cowmalo is no soccer player, worse than Mbazo. Onto the match kant don't these guys practise scoring goals in training? YeYe is a foward pass MASTER, Masilela dis well also, Thuso Phala is a fit version of Segolela..I'll wait for Afcon, ibelieve in this guys

yerrr, was KG dikgacoi even in the match? I swear this guy played garbage tonight. Mxm and mr sangweni just had to be dumb enuff to trip himself. Though i suspect he was paid to play #### so they can avenge excluded players like dracula myeni, diane klate and mbuyane. Khumalo should make way for either mathoho or xulu. Thuso phala still sucks. He was lucky he was playing against stiff cows. His crossing sucks, theres no difference between him and secowlela. Tshabalala seriously needs to eat that bench for lunch, breakfast and dinner. HE was horrific, though klate in his prime is still not beta than shabba. Did i mention i even forgot Dikgacowi was on the pitch?. RSA seriously needs attacking midfielders who can compliment serero, patosi and claasen.

You'd swear that we Orlando Pirates fans have PhDs in football. We broke this game down before the ball had even gotten kicked and we were proven correct!

We see things different...to say Thuso played well...wow! Did he make one decent cross? Passing a difender is not football until series of absolute crosses are delivered.

Only Masilela was de best tonite de rest was just inside de wrong bus, i forsee a disaster come Afcon.

Mphela, Khumalo, Phala, Dikgacio, Sandilands, Tshabalala, should be droped without replacement.

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. How can they be proud losing to a second string Norwegian side?! I was listening to the post match interviews and journalists and also the coach was happy with the game. When will this mediocrity come to an end?!

At least now we can string 5-8 passes undisturbed

As for Nsimbi iplastic leyanto(Majoro proved ths in d previous derby). U cnt pair him wit Khumalo izinto ezifanayo nje.

If we can be honest: the guys played better today,

Tokelo Rantie still has cow tendencies in him

Mphela should stick to Downs

Khune didn't do nothing, these Norwegians were playing not to loose

All the 2010 deadwood(except for Yeye) abame kancane nje bayasicandisa str8..

Serero uyababa boy

Thuso keep it up, mawenza nje KC might consider bringing u back

Great support from Kaizer Chiefs fans on holiday in the Cape and those residing in the Western Cape.

Is it too late for the following changes?

Sangweni ----------> Mathoho

Khumalo -----------> Mashamaite

Dikgacoi ------------> Andile " Mini Msholozi" Jali

So Bafana Chiefs got beaten by the under 21 from Norway? How can you substitute Mphela when you need a goal? GI is stupid!

I. Agree Siya made a mistake, but players re-grouped n Khumalo n Yeye ball watched n wher was the Mzansi's finest because we suppose to be a team.

Guys get over yourselfs, there was no game plan here, Phala did well because there was no pressure on Anele, our full backs wher on holiday.

Masilela is finished, he can't even overlap or launch a decent cross, Matlaba would have been better.

KG is a waste, Chabangu is average, Shabba must dissappear,Parker is just Parker.

When is May going to shine.

yeye used to be my favourate because l thought he 'd grow with age but even today he still make straight passes. Does he even know diagonal passes in modern football? As for Shabba eix. I wish ppi would believe l expect better from chiefs ,nit against it.
