Mamelodi Sundowns beat University of Pretoria 1-0

Posted: 23 October 2012 Time: 21:24

Mamelodi Sundowns relieved some of the pressure on coach Johan Neeskens with a 1-0 Telkom Knockout Cup win against University of Pretoria on Tuesday evening.

Sundowns dominated possession in the first half, but were unable to really stretch the visitors’ defence and create scoring chances from open play. However, Teko Modise twice threatened from free-kicks.

His first was well palmed away by Tuks goalkeeper Washington Arubi on 22 minutes, while the second rattled the crossbar in the 39th. Those were the only notable attacking moments of the first half from either team.

The Brazilians’ attack clicked into a higher gear in the third minute of the second half. Punch Masenamela picked out Elias Pelembe on the right wing, who beat his marker before providing a perfect low pass which was swept emphatically into the back of the net by Laffor.

Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango was a spectator in the first half, but he saw more action in the second, keeping out an angled drive from Mame Niang before twice having to punch away an awkward aerial ball in the 74th minute as Tuks began to put more pressure on the hosts’ defence.

Substitute Nyasha Mushekwi had a golden chance to wrap up the game ten minutes before time when he pinched the ball off Tebogo Monyai and headed toward goal, but the defender got back to make a risky challenge and did just enough to deny the striker.

Goalkeeper Arubi produced two excellent saves to keep the score down to 1-0 in the dying minutes, keeping out goal-bound efforts from Mushekwi and Hlompho Kekana as Sundowns searched for a killer second goal.

@ Anonymous, even Onyekachi Okonkwo needed a maximum of 3 points against Leopard last weekend. I guess Pirates learning centre don't include Nigerians, Zulus(Sangweni) & Pedis(Segolela).

Induku isidakiwe neh: Pelembe was happy with the three points so as our coach: eish, but on a positive note we played well, showed some signs of dedication and commitment: our coach started with a 4 4 2 formation and if he can continue on this system: we will be back to our form....I like what Tuks coach said before the game...I quote "Form is temporal but class is permanent"....it was a silver lining in the dark cloud that Downs after such a bad start some individuals who know and are involved in football still have respect for us: anyways big ups to all the fans, the players (especially the ever-shining Teko Modise)...that's a leader

Durban here we come and Sorry that we have to beat Amazulu in their own yard...the chances we missed yesterday, will be brought back to the forthcoming games....something like 6 goals: if I'm not mistaken...to All amaSundawana amahle: let's continue supporting our team

However we know what he's capable of ....very talented player. These are the kinds of foreign players we need in our league, not these avarage players like aboMsocoya, Tafera Fikru, Otorogu,Mwape

@Gucci...I agree with you 100%,we need foreigners that will add value to our football not what we possess currently, take Lincoln Svasiya,Willard Katsande just to mention a few,we have had in the past cows like Hiladou Malam,Serge Njiahao,Dick Amukola,Ronny Dube,Wedson Nyirenda,Wasui Ipaye,Likoane Likoane and who can forget the two Brazilians that were brought by the late Walter Da Silva.

Well done to Downs...it would have been a mess if they lost this one...

I wish them well in the league too...I still say: "Teko is world class"

That kiss-madolo giraffe Rodgers should have played for Wits...Manqele chose wrong..

Lets hope that this win was a confidence booster....

The match with Amazulu will not only be for the TKO but also for the honors of "who is the better anchor/foundation of the PSL log pyramid" lol.

I must take my hat off to the Chiefs and Pirates supporters who are happy with our win. That's the beauty in the game of football. You want to beat a confident rival not a limping one, salute baf'wethu.

On the game

Thanks coach for granting Dennis Onyango his debut in an official game. Khune,Mweene,Josephs,Walters,Williams,Tignyeb,Onyango and Amazulu captain, are currently the best goalkeepers currently plying their trade in the PSL. Etafia is too inconsinstent,Sandilands organisation of defence is wanting, Arwubi hasn't been around long enough to be rated.

Teko, thank you my captain.I've seen games where you fought alone and surely you deserved this relief. Coach, thanks for twisting your trusted 4-3-3 formation, I thought the 4-2-4 you applied compliments our players very well. It helps us utilize the ammunition at our disposal.

Downs 'till my soul touches the sky!
