Zambia beat South Africa in Nelson Mandela Challenge

Posted: 14 November 2012 Time: 21:56

South Africa will have a lot of soul-searching to do before the Africa Cup of Nations after a very disappointing 1-0 Nelson Mandela Challenge defeat to Zambia at Soccer City on Wednesday night.

Collins Mbesuma scored the only goal of the game just past the hour-mark, but it was a well below par performance from Gordon Igesund’s team – one that will have the nation worried just two months before the continental tournament.

It promised so much in the beginning though, with Bafana Bafana racing out of the blocks and Ricardo Nunes’ third-minute free-kick forcing a good block from Kennedy Mweene.

Five minutes later and Bernard Parker shot inches over from 20 yards out, before Zambia came into the game – Isaac Chansa stinging Itumeleng Khune’s hands after a mazy run which left two defenders in his wake.

Jacob Mulenga came closest on 17 minutes; his free-kick beating Khune, but also the upright by a matter of inches.

Bafana then suffered a blow when Tokelo Rantie was stretchered off on 27 minutes, replaced by Katlego Mashego.

Lerato Chabangu had his shot on the half-hour hit the roof of the net after a short-corner routine, but thereafter the game descended into a scrap which saw three players pick up yellow cards.

Bafana started the second half well, with Mshego having two half-chances early on which both sailed over.

However, it was Zambia who were to find the back of the net on 64 minutes – and a cracker it was! After some patient build-up play, substitute Mbesuma found himself with half-a-yard of space on the edge of the box, and his left-footed thunderbolt left Khune with no chance.

Ten minutes later and Chipolopolo almost made it two when Thabo Nthethe missed a cross and the ball fell to James Chamanga, but the former Moroka Swallows man could not react quick enough from six yards out.

Bafana had two decent chances soon afterwards – first Thuso Phala, making his debut from the bench, had his deflected shot acrobatically tipped over the bar by Mweene, before Kermit Erasmus, off balance, headed over after the Free State Stars goalie missed a corner.

Mbesuma had a very strong penalty appeal waved away late on, while Mweene produced an excellent save to deny Erasmus in the dying seconds, but the African champions were well worth the victory.

Bafana starting XI: Khune - Nthethe, Ngcongca, Khumalo, Nunes – Furman (Buckley 80th), Dikgacoi (Letsholonyane 64th) – Myeni (Phala 52nd), Parker (Erasmus 46th), Chabangu (Modise 73rd) – Rantie (Mashego 27th)

Zambia starting XI: Mweene, Musonda, Himoonde, Nkausu (Mbola 55th), Sunzu, Sinkala, Lungu (Njobvu (77th), J. Mulenga (Mbesuma 46th), Chansa (M Mulenga 60th), C. Katongo (Sakuwaha 60th), Mayuka (Chamanga 69th)

Baf'wethu let's not be dramatic and start calling for the coaches head.
Today and the next three friendlies will be used to assess the coaches options,in other words who the team needs and who must fall away(for example in my opinion Kagiso Dikgacoi,Bongani Khumalo)

I must say though I enjoyed seeing Khumalo getting skinned by Mbesuma,i-shibobo,trickery,skill and then he's left for dead.
Luis Suarez,Diego Forlan and Frank Ribery did the same to this guy.

Eventually it will all come together for the team, they are a work in progress and we need to be patient with them.
Khune is still a good keeper,Mbesuma packs a mighty shot I can't diss Khune for that.

The following players should be dropped and NEVER ever be selected again: Dikgacow, Cowne, Cowmalo, Furman, that Nunes thing, Myeni( where did he get §o maÑy teeth?), buckley, Tshabalala, Cowboni, gaxa, jerre. Replace them with williams, mabizela, phungwayo, gcaba of pirates, lebese, secowlela, and we will get better!

As South Africans I think we need to stand up and support Bafana not the indivual players as some of peole do,I can't understand why people are blaming a single individual player. For inquisitive sake may I ask ,was Khune playing single handedly than should we blame him.We need to support the coach, and the rest of the team ,South Africa this is not politics but this is soccer the game of peace.

Chansa single handedly out played Furman and Dikgacio. Furman is a cow and since these two are the first choice centre mids, I don't see anything other than a group stage exit for the national team.

GI does not know how to effectively use the talent Mzanzi possesses. Personally, even with that simple squad he had tonight, he should've beat Zambia. But he he is letting down the nation with his favoritism of international players over local based players. With that squad, the best available options to play at CM were Yeye and Teko. Not KG and that crab Furman. Punch is so much better than Nunes. Set piece specialist my foot. Myeni does not perform on the wings. He should be playing behind the strikers. Bongani Khumalo is a joke. OJ Mabizela is waaaaaaaaay better. Even Daniels would be a better option than Khumalo. But GI undermines the PSL and prefers overseas based players over our local based players. The Bafana job is too big for GI. Coaching a national team has its people. GI is not a national team coach.

Really what killed Bafana is that midfield. Dean 'Mr Crab' Furman and Kagiso Dikgacio are not Bafana material.

Why did Gordon n Serame start with a team without a play maker, dont tell me Lerato is a play maker, to make matters worse,Bafana always lacked in the box when they attacked because of Gordon's defensive approach.Yeye,Teko and Shabba are the most offensive players we had but he put them on the bench.Zambia played a waiting game and we did the same.stupit approach indeed
