Bernard Parker brace as South Africa beat Mozambique

Posted: 11 September 2012 Time: 22:24

Bernard Parker’s goal in either half saw Bafana Bafana record a comfortable – if not overly convincing – 2-0 win against Mozambique at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.

After the brave effort against Brazil on Friday, much was expected of Gordon Igesund’s men against a weakened Mambas side, and while they were impressive in patches, the familiar old problem of wasted chances again came back to haunt them.

Thankfully Parker brought his scoring boots and scored after just seven minutes after running onto Siphiwe Tshabalala’s well-weighted pass, scuffing his shot past the Mambas goalkeeper.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane almost netted three minutes later with a thunderous volley from outside the area, before captain Bongani Khumalo header over from a corner when completely unmarked.

Mozambique’s one decent chance of the half fell the way of Helder Pelembe, whose powerful shot from distance sailed inches over.

Lerato Chabangu curled a free-kick just over while Khumalo then scored a perfect header from Tshabalala’s free-kick, but it was wrongfully ruled offside.

The South Africans started the second half strongly and almost got a fortuitous goal when Parker’s low cross deflected off a defender and went just over the crossbar.

Parker again came close on the hour-mark when substitute May Mahlangu got free down the right and squared the ball, but the Chiefs’ man side-footed shot was tame and straight at the keeper.

Tshabalala had a great chance shortly afterwards when he was played through on goal, but the Mambas goalkeeper did well to spread himself and save the effort.

The game descended into a bit of a scrap after that, with Bafana struggling to create any chance of note, while Mozambique seemed content to limit the damage.

However, Bafana did finally add to their tally, and again Parker was the scorer – running onto debutant Tamsanqa Gabuza’s square-ball and beating the keeper with a low shot from outside the box.

Former Bidvest Wits defender Almiro Lobo was shown a second yellow late on as the Mambas were brought down to earth at Mbombela Stadium - though a Moeneeb Josephs error almost gave them something to smile about – and Igesund got that much-needed first win under his belt.

STARTING XIs:

South Africa: Josephs – Gaxa, Sangweni, Khumalo (Fransman 70), Masenamela – Tshabalala (Matlaba 84), Furman (Mokotjo 90), Letsholonyane (Maluleka 62) – Serero (Mahlangu 55), Parker, Chabangu (Gabuza 74)

people need to learn to analyse the game than individual players, this is a national team ,not chiefs not sundowns not pirates, but u still find monkeys running down their trees trying to be funny asking all stupid questions about certain players, some say shabba was not inthe game, what a fuck must this guy do to prove he was in the game, as for moneeb not making a save, yes thats the reason those defenders are there to do, defend everything that is meant to go towards their goalline.leave your hatred to your granfather for white people and focus on what that little mlungu called furman did, considering its his second game with bafana, lets all hail Gordon igusend for a job welldone, not that nonsense when we lost to brazil and still went ahead in celebrations, i dont celebrate a loss, anytype of death is still death, there is only one type of a grave.Lerato chabangu needs to be complemented for taking his soccer carrer seriously again, and lets surport him to show we only hated his deeds during his deficult time,i can now safely say i am a proudly south african. bushbuckridge is where i come from,

The air of 'refreshment' in the national team is still a bit stale.... we're still missing a big character there... a younger Teko Modise, Shoes Mosheou kind of player that can put the team on their back...

Maybe Myeni or Mzi Mashaba can do thusly...

Or maybe it's a good thing we don't have that kind of a player... I suppose everyone must believe that they can carry the team...

But can they...?

It was a boring game. The usual huffing and puffing. Not enough penetration, scoring chances were very few. It was a poor game. Tshabalala wasn't good ebough, so was may mahlangu. That oldham athletic man, he doesn't move around enough. Yawn, all I can say

If Mokotjo and Furman continue to play like this, I'm telling U the likes of Jali and Teko will find it difficult to break into the NATIONAL team. Wht they need to do is to work extra hard like Chabangu and Parker. I'm still asking; what was the meerkat doing ther towards the end. By the way thanx Fransman(former chiefs) for keeping the clean slate

Once the goalkeeper don't make even a single save that tells people who knows soccer that he did his homework that is well organising the defefnce. Mokotjo,Matlaba and Furman watch the space.

Whats there to celebrate coz that was the most boring game against Mozambiques under 23s. As much as the zebras won't admit mara deep down they know Shabba and Yeye should be dropped. They've run their course and should hand over the batton.

Myeni should be roped in for his pace, skills and intellegence

I thank you!!
