Mamelodi Sundowns beat Free State Stars

Posted: 30 April 2013 Time: 21:31

A goal on either side of the break from Nyasha Mushekwi secured a 2-1 victory for Mamelodi Sundowns over Free State Stars at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday night.

Ea Lla Koto halved the deficit through Daniel Cardoso, but it was not enough to prevent the Brazilians recording a long overdue win.

Richard Henyekane and Hlompho Kekana were at the end of the first two chances of the game. Henyekane found himself in a one-on-one situation, but he could blasted his shot over the bar from an acute angle.

Kekana then found himself in a bit of space before shooting from range, but Kennedy Mweene though was up to the task.

The home side opened the scoring through Mushekwi on 19 minutes; the Zimbabwean controlling a cross from Tebogo Langerman with his chest before shooting past Mweene for his third goal of the campaign.

Stars hardly had a sniff at goal in the first half, but went close eight minutes before the break when Katlego Mashego’s free-kick from just outside the box went just over Wanye Sandilands’ crossbar.

It took a while for the second half to get into business, but Mushekwi eventually settled the nerves on 72 minutes with his second; turning smartly before latching onto a clever touch from Teko Modise.

Stars pulled one back in the 86th minute through Cardoso, who headed home Dove Wome’s cross, and they pressed for the equaliser but just couldn’t get the point their play deserved.
