Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows draw in MTN8

Posted: 18 August 2012 Time: 22:17

Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows drew 3-3 in the MTN8 semifinal first-leg at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

Chabangu, a former Sundowns player, was back his best forma nd had a hand in Swallows’ goals, scored by Felix Obada, Ashraf Hendricks and Bennet Chenene. The Sundowns goals were scored by Teko Modise, Hlompho Kekana and Edward Manqele.

But while The Birds will be thrilled with the result, Sundowns missed some fantastic scoring chances and will be the unhappier side as they go home tonight.

Swallows struck in the sixth minute. Lerato Chabangu made a goal line save and goalkeeper Greg Etafia pumped the ball forward. Chenene did very well to draw his marker and find Obada who took his time and placed his low shot into the corner of goal.

Two minutes later Swallows grabbed a second goal when a Chabangu corner kick was met by Ashraf Hendricks’ head.

The ball went straight into the ground and looped towards the far post and snuck into the net. But Punch Masenamela had left his defensive position on the far post and will want to forget this silly moment.

Sundowns were soon back in the game when they scored from a Teko Modise penalty, but at his second attempt, after he was ordered to retake his initial spot kick because Etafia had moved off his line.

Modise went the same way again and this time his attempt was far stronger.

After the break Pelembe crossed to Manqele, but his downward header bounced into the hard surface and went over the bar, when it seemed easier to score than miss.

Then Method Mwanjale hit the upright with a low drive but in the 64th minute Sundowns found the equaliser when Hlompho Kekana side-footed a volley past Etafia.

But in the 75th minute, Chabangu spotted Chenene’s run and played him through on goal. Chenene drew the goalkeeper and finished expertly.

But Sundowns equalised ten minutes later thanks to an excellent Edward Manqele strike.

With a man on his back, Manqele turned and blasted a left footed shot from a tight angle, which gave Etafia no chance in goal.

Thami Sangweni came close with a shot across goal in the dying moments when he really should have hit the target.

Dis Zeca thing should start playing Rudi Isaacs instead of Mapemba n rather play a right footed player at dat left back position coz Shere belongs to da bench. Chabangu is our best player so far. I am stl wondering wat did Makhanya do to dat asshole (Marques). Bt Swallows will go through to da final coz Sundowns cant win at the slaughter house....... I hope Mathebula cn recover asap. I am a concerned Bird hoping for da Best on da return leg. I dnt understand y Obada stl plays 90 minutes. Eish

our coach has not strategy to attack because all he ever does is tell players to wheep in early crosses and hope for miracle. Cant he see Manqele is not not and definitely not a guy for lone striker?

Don't you get tired of hoping from one bed to the other everytime your Gayzer Chimps team loses out? But then again, who am I to question your sexuality in soccer? You and the rest of your faithFOOL supporters from NaZoorena have the same tendency of hopping around.

Go suck some weiners of opponents that try to stand in Bucs way. And before you do that, suck on this...

Simple: Nomvete man marked by a rookie, did a good job. Swallows wings restricted. Modise, Langerman and Pelembe outplayed. Missed chances. Ageing Swallows players. Nyandoro exposed, Manqele showed character. A GREAT GAME TO WATCH

I think both teams did well, with three goals a side it shows that they wanted to progress to the finals. One can understand why they both did not show good display on the pitch because the focus was on goals. Good luck to both teams in the second leg.

Khosi for life.

Mabaso can take on both Fatties anytime. The Phefeni boys' analysis is biased anyway, who can blame him...
