SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates MTN8 semi-final ends goalless

Posted: 19 August 2012 Time: 16:59

The MTN8 semi-final first leg match between SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates at Peter Mokaba Stadium ended in a goalless draw on Sunday.

SuperSport had Edwin Gyimah sent off just before half-time, while Pirates finished the match with 10 men as Rooi Mahamutsa was sent off at the death.

It is bound to be a heated return game next weekend. Neutrals will hope to see fewer cards and more goals.

The Buccaneers will be disappointed that they were unable to take advantage of having a man's advantage for more than half of the match.

Pirates started the stronger of the two teams and had a penalty appeal turned down in the eighth minute when Benni McCarthy's goal-bound shot was blocked by Bevan Fransman. Replays suggested referee Thabo Nkosi got the decision right.

SuperSport then settled into the game, with their midfield trio of Gyimah, Geroge Maluleka and Moffat Mdluli making life tough for Bucs, although the hosts struggled to create clear scoring chances.

The two best opportunities of the first half went the way of Pirates. On the half hour mark Thulasizwe Mbuyane controlled an Andile Jali cross before getting away a low shot from a tight angle that trickled across the face of goal.

Four minutes later left-back Thabo Matlaba surged into the box with a mazy run before cutting inside to shoot with his right foot, but Fransman again was in the right place to make a crucial block.

Just before the half-time break Matsatsantsa were reduced to 10 men when Gyimah received a straight red card. The midfielder lashed out in retaliation at Manti Moholo after a 50-50 challenge between the two, and was given his marching orders.

Pirates were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men themselves when Jali, already on a yellow card, committed a foul against substitute Franklyn Cale that was worthy of a straight red, never mind a mere second caution, but this time the match officials missed the offence.

On 68 minutes Mpho Makola had a great chance to score his first goal for Pirates after great set-up play by Tlou Segolela and Mbuyane, but he directed his shot straight at Ronwen Williams.

Pirates continued to pile on the pressure in an attempt to take advantage of their numerical advantage, but were unable to force a goal against a determined United defence that allowed them nothing but half-chances in the last quarter of the game.

The match ended in controversy, with Pirates' Rooi Mahamutsa sent off after the final whistle for an idiotic kick on Thabiso Nkoana.

I understand that amongst some of you Chiefs fans you like the name: The Dream Team.... I understand, I mean if I were you and the opposition has such a fearsome all conquering name... I'd be a little envious...

On Myeni, future bafana player...? No doubt... but the future is now...!!

If a player can't make it at Pirates, the flagship team in Southern Africa... he definitely won't make it anywhere including the national team...

Phela The Dream Team is where life is made most easiest for a player given the quality around that player.... so if one can't perform around superstar players surely he can't perform around average players such the like found at teams like Supersport, Wits, Golden Arrows and wait for it...............................

Kaizer Chiefs....!

This team has all the potential to conquer Africa... My heart says yes yes yes we can...!

Reality is, not this season.... Participating in the group stages & reaching the Semis would be good enough for me...

However, given the inevitability of trebling the Treble... next season we'll be back in Africa we'll definetly conquer then...

However again, who is to say that we can't conquer this season...? This team has surprised all.... Who would have predicted us taking the 1st treble...?

The Dream Team is full of surprises but I wouldn't be shocked should we capture the elusive second star**...

It has nothing to do with faith...

Reality is the PSL has made some of The Dream Team members very complacent... the PSL has become somewhat too easy for the players...

So a 2nd re-invigoration in CAF participation this season we'll set the team well to conquer for next season... in my humble opinion...

Like i said this is the only team in the PSL that can match the Galaxies pound for pound and I was proven right, not one of our best games so far but all is not lost,we need to win at London and we will be in the final and as to who we wil play is not really important,Njenje did well by playing 3 central mid to neutralise the strong SS mid of Maluleka and Gyman bt we did not exert ourselves the way we should.its gud Mahamutsa won't play in the next to games that see the return of the best left back in the country in Phungwayo, returning again is Mathews Oupa Manyisa..don't despair Mabhakaniya...this one is in the bag..let them the dogs from next door bark as usual...

Since when does calling people coloured is racial dicrimination?.....in your opinion if i were to call players black i would be dicrimination......pleae do not use your behind to think.......we will comment about this lousy team called Pirates just as you guys comment on the so called Zebras.......

Your team is not going to win no treble this year and they are not going to conquer Africa.....they just dont have players compete out in Africa....they dont even have the coach to lead those players...that Njenje is a waste of a coach, he cant read the game...many of your fellow supporters can see that......

You cant rely on The Fat Man to score goals.....he us so unfit its not funny....he is bad for our football.

Stop believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunnies.....
