SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates MTN8 semi-final ends goalless

Posted: 19 August 2012 Time: 16:59

The MTN8 semi-final first leg match between SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates at Peter Mokaba Stadium ended in a goalless draw on Sunday.

SuperSport had Edwin Gyimah sent off just before half-time, while Pirates finished the match with 10 men as Rooi Mahamutsa was sent off at the death.

It is bound to be a heated return game next weekend. Neutrals will hope to see fewer cards and more goals.

The Buccaneers will be disappointed that they were unable to take advantage of having a man's advantage for more than half of the match.

Pirates started the stronger of the two teams and had a penalty appeal turned down in the eighth minute when Benni McCarthy's goal-bound shot was blocked by Bevan Fransman. Replays suggested referee Thabo Nkosi got the decision right.

SuperSport then settled into the game, with their midfield trio of Gyimah, Geroge Maluleka and Moffat Mdluli making life tough for Bucs, although the hosts struggled to create clear scoring chances.

The two best opportunities of the first half went the way of Pirates. On the half hour mark Thulasizwe Mbuyane controlled an Andile Jali cross before getting away a low shot from a tight angle that trickled across the face of goal.

Four minutes later left-back Thabo Matlaba surged into the box with a mazy run before cutting inside to shoot with his right foot, but Fransman again was in the right place to make a crucial block.

Just before the half-time break Matsatsantsa were reduced to 10 men when Gyimah received a straight red card. The midfielder lashed out in retaliation at Manti Moholo after a 50-50 challenge between the two, and was given his marching orders.

Pirates were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men themselves when Jali, already on a yellow card, committed a foul against substitute Franklyn Cale that was worthy of a straight red, never mind a mere second caution, but this time the match officials missed the offence.

On 68 minutes Mpho Makola had a great chance to score his first goal for Pirates after great set-up play by Tlou Segolela and Mbuyane, but he directed his shot straight at Ronwen Williams.

Pirates continued to pile on the pressure in an attempt to take advantage of their numerical advantage, but were unable to force a goal against a determined United defence that allowed them nothing but half-chances in the last quarter of the game.

The match ended in controversy, with Pirates' Rooi Mahamutsa sent off after the final whistle for an idiotic kick on Thabiso Nkoana.

Well, the boys gave us an average peformance that i last saw in a long time and Thabo Matlaba still has to learn more when holdng the ball that u mst share instead of trying to dribble the whole team especially in the 18 area, but besides that im still impressd by his overoll performance.

As for our strike force, it looks like without Benni we tend to struggle as Mbesuma never made his presence felt mara akatshwenyi coz we will boo him if he doesnt pull up his socks. Palocious mst start to introduce Takesure in the next game for us to see what he is capable of, even if it can be the last 5 minutes display it will fine. What happend to Talatou to me was unproffesional and its disgsting no matter how much u tryna justify it, mbhedo stait!
As for uRooi, im speechless...!

What's a noise for? Pirates played away and came with a draw which to me is a good result. All they need to do is to win at home and march to the final.

These PSL referees are not consistence, the SSU player got a deserving red card and the same pirates player... jail should have got a straight red for the foul on Franklin Cale.

It's interesting how Chiefs & Sundowns supporters run to this site to make sure that their prematurely ejaculated posts are read first...

The game:

Yep, my worries have been confirmed, Mbesuma is a waste of a signing... 15minutes no effort, he's just not interested absolutely no motivation... where's Drogba's? Surely Mbesuma cannot be hungrier than him...

Myeni, for me is two strikes down... One more then I right him off... he is no-longer playing for Wits he's playing for The Dream Team where almost is not good enough... Professor must make an immediate return he can't be worse than this...

Rooi, his red card is a blessing in disguise, this thing of trying to make space for all 3 war-horses is not gonna work.... Patrick is the man for that left-wing-back position...

On the other hand, maybe I'm being sinister, a draw away from home is not the worst result in the world...

It's a pity you only see them now, when Masilela's goal was disallowed no one complained, when Arthur Zwane cleared the goal off the line with his hand there were no complaints, why only complaining now? We have to admit that referees are human beings like you and me we make mistakes where we work.

Playing 10 man is always dangerous especial against Gavin who knws how to defend we were lucky they didn't catch us on the counter. Something needs to be done, our strikers are not getting enough supply. Mbuyane is not clicking with Benny they are both slow, since Tokelo is no longer around it will be wise to try Tlou up front to benefit from Benny's lay offs. On the other hand I can’t really blame anyone Gavin's plan was to close us down & not allow us any space to play & it worked.

We are still on our march to the final. Played badly but still did not loose, what will happen to SS when we play well on Tuesday and Saturday. By the way this was the only game that the coaches could experiment and now that the game is done without many scars. The next games are non-negotiables and that is Bucs specialities.

Let us remind the supporters of the teams that are not participating in the competition that they are allowed to give their analysis freely. I think that most posts on this topic are from players of certain teams. They cannot be objective when they are just watching other professional players playing. This weekend and next weekend they are just like us...ouch that cannot be nice.

A dream team by definition
Is a team filled with superstars & dominates amongst it's peers... 6 trophies out of 8 & a whimsical back-to-back triumph over your beloved Amakhosi in CBL is empirical evidence... I thought I should clarify this in text cause off-course you wouldn't know how it feels like & I'd be at odds with myself trying to explain the feeling for you...

We've been here before as The Dream Team... and you know what's the difference between your team & mine........??

We're still in the competition....:0 yakes.....
