Orlando Pirates draw 1-1 with Free State Stars

Posted: 17 April 2013 Time: 21:25

Orlando Pirates lost further ground on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs following a 1-1 draw with Free State Stars at Charles Mopeli Stadium on Wednesday night.

The home side had taken the lead through former Buccaneer Paulus Masehe, but Pirates levelled through a dubious penalty converted by Collins Mbesuma on 79 minutes.

It was a sixth successive draw for Pirates and leaves them six points behind Kaizer Chiefs with five games remaining.

Both sides found their rhythm relatively quickly, but a lack of incision in the final third meant clear scoring chances were hard to come by in the first half hour.

Stars saw midfielder Sihle Mpuqa head over from a corner-kick, while Pirates created a couple of half-chances for the likes of Takesure Chinyama and Onyekachi Okonkwo.

On the half-hour mark Bucs had the first clear opening, with Okonkwo’s lob over the defence sending Mpho Makola through on goal, but with only Kennedy Mweene to beat he pulled his shot wide.

On 32 minutes Ea Lla Koto punished some slack defending and broke the deadlock. Pirates dealt poorly with a corner kick and Paulus Masehe was left free to drive home a half-volley from a tight angle.

Stars should have gone into the break two goals up as Luyolo Nomandela had a great chance in injury-time, but a heavy touch when through on goal allowed Senzo Meyiwa to smother the ball.

Pirates started the second half brightly and Daine Klate threatened a couple of times; first curling a cross-cum-shot just off target, and then a few minutes later forcing Mweene into a good save.

Dove Wome then flashed a shot across the face of goal before Pirates were handed something of a gift when Mpuqa was harshly penalised for hand-ball in the box, allowing Mbesuma to convert from the spot.

On 83 minutes Mbesuma should have put Bucs ahead as he powered a header wide of the target from close range after a great cross by Makola, while Nomandela had a goal ruled out for offside when replays suggested it was legitimate.

To say its 'rough patch' would be an understatement.

The final stretch of any marathon is momentous. In this period you need everyone at their best from fans, to muti man/muti men, to refs, technical team, physios, team Drs,regular players, squad players, etc. Under 'normal' circumstances the top3 teams, one would say, are still in the race. However, I look at my team, recent results, who is out injured?, who is available?(thus, strength of the team), remaining opponents, venues, etc, and then ask if this 'car'(our team) can reach the destination ahead of fellow competitors. My heart says, no ways, my head says anything is possible in football, other competitors too wont have it easy, the road ahead is tough for everyone, only those hungry enough and will seize their opportunities better will ultimately triumph.

We dont need 'rough patch' at this stage of the marathon, but an inform team, we need a team that grinds results, get nothing than max results. Every draw adds pressure that can create costly mistakes & further worsen the situation, while a win can boost confidence and self belief which can create better performance..kweek! madoda

I'm taking a break from football - Orlando Pirates to be more specific. I'll watch Saturday's game for the sake of it but as of now the only team my hope is pinned on is my beloved Real Madrid for the Champions league. That is where my heart lies right now. Los Blancos always give me joy and when we lose or draw you just know how much the other team suffered.

As for Orlando Pirates, I shall enter the bed chambers of The Black Pearl and rest. I'm exhausted mentally and for that I need rest. Physically too am tired so I will need a beef me up vitty to get me energy back.

Football 101 was indoctrinated at the University of Orlando
Hala Madrid!!!

Go well and have a deserved break...you really need it. However, stop fooling yourself, your eyes will be on KC and as soon as they slip up(which I doubt and u are praying for) you will be here, running your mouth

To Be Honest my fellow Buccaneer, what I have Notice. Its No Longer the coach fault in All Gods Honestly there are senior players @ Pirates who don't want to carry the Team , because don't see Eye 2 eye with RDS. Pass 2-3 Games all we have ask Of RDS He has Executed , we said Give Makola. Masuku, chance and He Did. Yes He is 'dead wrong' with Gcaba @ The Back But Can You Blame Him?? What Lekgwati has been Playing Lately?? Even sangweni against Ajax Cape town. There are certain Players Who think they "Own The jersey @ Pirates its detremintal to Our Cause , we are back in "Teko mOdise, Mhlongo,Mashego\" Days where u had certain players who think and thought they were better than the rest of the squad\" Until Rudi krol Stamp his authority.

Guess what happen a Treble 'first' came in because we had a Team that was willing to fight for one another. Team spirit was @ its most high, There not 'Bigger players nor small players\". Yes RDS is solely responsible for this so as this players. We need to Overhaul this team and chopp dead wood, and instill discipline. Its clearly its Gone RDS has lost the Dressing room. And some players wants Him Out, and I think also the same players must Go also. They lack proffessionalisom Look @ How We lost to Maluti, and after comments of certain players ' Our mind was not there' WtF?

Lets see bhutiza. Mara you also won nothing thus far, and still need to play and win next games to confirm if you are still on the right track, not forgetting you also dropped crucial pts in your last two games, and noone knows for sure what future holds...asiphelimandla

Don’t stress Bhakaniya , Carling Black Label is just around the corner , I consider that’s the merely object that can bring back the chuckle to the Ghost clan.
Talking about dropping points , if you observed those games you will noticed that the middle-man played his central character and it’s sad that his decisions influenced the outcome of those matches.
However it’s not only South Africa that live through incompetence of these middle-men, in Europe ,South America all over the world . I’m not gonna inhabit too greatly on those ineffectiveness and lowly judgment as that would hollow my liveliness today .
It’s just a matter of time before you acknowledges that this league is going to Naturena .

Also there is a an influence of Screamer in the team.....bad for team spirit

As DIEHARD Buccaneer I have given up any hope of winning anything this season. It was never our season after taking into account many variable that have befallen our team. Injuries to key players, playing more games than enyone else, poor refereeing and the drying up of goals from some of our players like Jele, Lucky, Sangweni and Manyisa who all played a significant role last season and the one before.
Having noted that I must also hasten to add that Í'll be rooting for PS to unseat these jealous and loud mouthed monkeys from the zoo. Otherwise we'll never hear the end of it from laba fazi

1. No, my mind isnt in pre-season yet bhutiza. Remember that my team is a champions league team. There is something else to focus on apart from domestic league. The marathon is still on, I have not given up on my team, no ways.

2. Football is very cruel. apart from topping the charts, there is nothing won. Lets see how you fare in your next games and talk about league destination later..

Poor me six draws and Chiefs lead me by a lousy six points, had the referee seen that hand of God that robbed Pirates against Celtics and that disallowed penalty against chiefs and Mbesuma's miscalculated header last night and all the drawn games I should have won I would be in the driving seat and singing my song "The happy People" are on the roll. As much as I do not understand the technical things about Pirates playing I do not think RDS and ET know how bad it is for us the Ghost to be going for so long without a win
Oh soccer can be a cruel game but I believe Pirates will surprise many by reversing our fortunes this season by outplaying TP Mazembe, you can call me a dreamer for all I care but who thought Chippa will beat Swallows last night and again football can be cruel

Nywe nywe lucky escape is Chiefs the two last derbies there was a goal that was disallowed scored by Mbesuma it waa ruled for offside, Tlou Segoelela was brought down in the box against Chiefs again and the penalty was not given instead Tlou got a yellow. Against Bloemfontein Celtic that boy Ntanga scored with a hand and a goal was given so just leave us in peace.
