Kaizer Chiefs beat Chippa United in a League clash on Wednesday night.

Posted: 6 March 2013 Time: 21:27

Kaizer Motaung Jnr scored his first goal in more than a year as Kaizer Chiefs defeated 10-man Chippa United 2-0 at Athlone Stadium to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership.

Chippa were down to 10-men in the second half when they had Buyani Sali sent off.

Chiefs started off the better of the two teams and created a few half chances within the first quarter hour of the match. However, Chippa nearly claimed the lead on 18 minutes through former Amakhosi player Stanton Lewis, who shot just over the crossbar after meeting William Twala’s fine cross from the right flank.

Chiefs suffered an injury setback when Matthew Rusike pulled up with what appeared to be a groin or thigh problem, paving the way for substitute Kaizer Motaung Jnr to make just his second appearance of the 2012/13 season when he came off the bench in the 22nd minute.

Chippa were also forced into a first-half change when defender Tshepo Tomanyane succumbed to an earlier knock to the head and was replaced by James Okwousa. In the 42nd minute Masibusane Zongo forced Itumeleng Khune into a good, low save with a grass-cutter from the edge of the box.

Amakhosi coach Stuart Baxter opted for a more attacking approach at the start of the second half, sending on striker Sthembiso Ngcobo in place of wide-man Mandla Masango, who was completely anonymous in the first stanza.

The visitors were handed the initiative in the 53rd minute when Chippa midfielder Sali was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Willard Katsande. It took Chiefs just five minutes to take advantage of their numerical advantage and move into the lead.

A long throw-in from Morgan Gould was flicked-on by Tefu Mashamaite and an unmarked Motaung Jnr headed home for his first goal of the campaign.

On 64 minutes Kingston Nkhatha almost took advantage of a poor back-pass by Mbulelo Mabizela, but goalkeeper Daouda Kassaly was able to get his body in the way and make a brave block to keep the Chilli Boys just one goal down.

Chippa never really looked like finding an equaliser in the dying stages. Instead it was Chiefs who threatened to add to their lead with several quick attacks on the counter, and on 87 minutes Kassaly saved from Ngcobo’s effort, but Nkhatha was on hand to finish the rebound and make it 2-0.

Mandla Masango has the same genetic make-up as Ndumiso Mabena. I wonder if they are related.

On a serious note, Mandla is just chi8ldish in his play. Look how George Lebese has growth and earned himself a cap in GI's squad.

Even Mapholoba does something worthwhile (though I don't fancy him starting against gorillas)... even Kaizer juinior contributes something.

I also don't like Rusike and Nkatha's first touches on the ball, they tend to be clumpsy and lose possession without being tackled.

Am happy with Richie, he just needs a goal to cement his fast growing confidence with the ball.

@Tzozo - with all due respect my fellow Khosi, I hear what you say and I respect your opinion, however, as a supporter, you should know by now that for each player to have been awarded a starting/substitute berth in any day, they must have won the coaches heart during training at some point. For the coach/es, to bold mention that player's name on the list, means they're satisfied with what the player is/was doing. However, by now you should also now that games are not the same, and so is any player's perfomance on the day.Shabba is a good example in this case, as he recently been unfairly critiszed for poor perfomance.

Once again Khosi, our sole duty as Khosi supoorters( others have sapotas), is to cheer our boys to perfom at their utmost best, win or loose. We cannot force any coach to put a cplayer in the line up, nor can we force them to sub a player, and it is not good that some supporters are still doing the ''rolling hands'' signal to show they want a player substituted, as only the coach'es can make such a decision. Let's contribute positively to the club, and let other departments do their bit as well, I hope our Management is aware of what they need to do, to ensure the team is kept at peak level.
