PSL match report: Ajax Cape Town draw with Orlando Pirates

Posted: 10 April 2013 Time: 21:31

Orlando Pirates dropped valuable points in the race for the title, drawing 2-2 with Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday.

Abia Nale opened the scoring, but goals from Takesure Chinyama and Mpho Makola meant that Ajax needed an equaliser by Toriq Losper earn a share of the points.

The Urban Warriors were looking to draw inspiration from their 4-2 win over Free State Stars on Sunday, and Jan Versleijen certainly went on the offensive, starting with an attacking trio of Abia Nale, Khama Billiat and Lebogang Manyama.

All three had found the back of the net against the Ea Lla Koto and were looking to do the same against Pirates.

Lucky Lekgwathi made his 300th start for the visitors, but it was an inauspicious start to his milestone match, as both teams barely had time to settle before Senzo Meyiwa was picking the ball out of the back of the net.

Andile Jali, who was in doubt for the fixture, gave away possession in the middle of the park, and the ball fell to Billiat, who supplied a through ball to Nale. The Kaizer Chiefs loanee slotted it past Mewiya in the seventh minute.

Pirates then had the perfect opportunity to draw level through Thabo Matlaba, who had just the keeper to beat, but he skied his effort over the crossbar.

Lekgwathi nearly turned the ball into the back of his own net, in the 20th minute, when he intercepted Billiat’s cross into the box, but fortunately for him it went wide.

Ajax’s magic continued in the 40th minute, when their attacking trio played some great passing football. Manyama sent in a cross, from Billiat’s pass, towards Nale, who made a great run into the box before unleashing a shot which stung Meyiwa’s palms.

Ajax should have extended their lead a minute after the interval when Billiat went one on one with the keeper, but he panicked and rounded the crossbar.

Pirates then drew level in the 49th minute, when Chinyama left Sander Westerveld flatfooted in goal and nodded home a cross.

Bucs claimed the lead four minutes later, when substitute Makola cracked home a rebounded ball.

It was do or die for Ajax and they opted for the former when they responded with a goal, on the hour mark, when Losper received a ball from Manyama and beat his marker to tap home from six yards out.

An opportunity to close the game fell to Billiat once again, when he and Manyama combined beautifully around the box, but like most of his efforts on the night it was wide.

Wrong headline. It should read: Ajax held by Bucs. Though we had chances, they had more quality ones and should have burried us. Could it be that we were leaking at the back because Roger replaced Ayanda when he was finally getting it right?

It was a comedy of errors but special mention to Mpho Makola. While growing up in Alex he always had this unique technique and composure and its great to see that he still has it. He is supremely talented and if Roger had a clear rotation policy even with Myeni fit he could have picked up form earlier.

It's tough! It's really really tough!

Why don't u just give in? No matter how much u hate the idea but the zebra is running away with this one. I don't know why u prolong the hurt yo heart is going thru... I mean really do u note any characteristics of championship in that team? Just nje be honest, do u? Or let me say, if u was a neutral business person from what u have seen so far, whom were u gonna put yo money on? Chiefs or Pirates?

There is a difference between conceding defeat and giving up. I will concede defeat when it is mathematically impossible to not give up. What you asking me to do is to give up not to concede. I hope I have made the distinction clear

Let me define the word PERSEVERANCE for you: Continuing a course of action without regard to discouragement, opposition or previous failure.

I shall persevere until victory is no longer possible. The thing that you don't understand is that the harder it gets the tighter I hold on. I don't give up! I never ever give up! I might concede defeat but give up? Never! That is my mantra and the fighting spirit I saw tonight is the exact thing I have been crying for so contrary to what you might think, I have more reason to keep on holding on!

Up the Bucs!!!!

Well Lord Vinny carry on justify it all u like bc0z we both know its yo pride that's left 2 push aside other than that there's nothing left here. U speak of perseverance but u living by hope in reality. Let's break this down further, 4 Chiefs 2 win the Championship they need 2 remain consistent in the last 5 games like they've done the whole season; now 4 Pirates 2 win it, let's c 3 things need 2 happen, one they need 2 hit form and hit it very fast, 2 & 3 Chiefs & PS must go thru a rough patch. Huh! Statistically what are the odds of these 3 independent random occurrences taking place simultaneous? Maybe u should chew that.
Dont hate the player, hate the referee

Last time i heard the so called Ghost were gearing up for TP Mazembe not Ajax. The urban warriors to them was just a work out. But look they still 7 skimbas away from the Glamour boys the Zebra force. lead by the Team's finest SA number one Q3 Most outstanding player. Directed by the English Mr CV Thief. But when i think about it there is no Soccer University its a calling.

As i said before, de sa isn't good enough for pirates, it's like asking roger skhakhane to coach real madrid, surrounded with great talent not knowing what to do with it, we have game winners in our camp and de sa doesnt even know how to play them, okwonkwo is dead and he brought his bad luck with him, ajax had better tactics and showed their intentions whilst pirates were huffing and puffing nje, not impressed. Khoza should just know by now already that only a real coach can coach pirates. how i wish Rikaard can take charge of my team.
