Match report: Mamelodi Sundowns draw 1-1 with Golden Arrows

Posted: 19 February 2013 Time: 21:28

Golden Arrows earned a valuable point away from home when they held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.

Despite being on the back foot for most of the match, Abafana Bes’thende opened the scoring in the first half through Thamsanqa Gabuza, but Sundowns found the equaliser just before half-time through a deflected strike from Ntuthuko Mabaso.

The hosts dominated possession from the first whistle and fired the first warning shots, with Anthony Laffor forcing a save from Nkosingiphile Gumede in the second minute, and Mabaso doing the same 13 minutes later.

Arrows were always looking to catch the Brazilians on the counter and almost succeeded in the 16th minute as Bonginkosi Ntuli got the better of Alje Schut, only for the striker to send his shot straight at Wayne Sandilands.

The visitors did get the ball in the back of the net in the 32nd minute through Gabuza, but his goal was ruled out for offside, although he seemed to be level with a Sundowns player who was outside the penalty area.

The Arrows striker did finally break the deadlock six minutes later after he was put through by a great pass from Sibusiso Hadebe, nudging the ball past the advancing goalkeeper before sliding his follow-up shot into an empty net.

But Pitso Mosimane’s men found the equaliser two minutes before the break as Mabaso’s shot deflected of Mzivukile Tom and into the back of the net.

The second half was more of the same with Sundowns creating most of the chances, while Arrows looked to pounce on the counter.

Schut was the first man to test the goalkeeper in the 48th minute as he rose high to meet a free kick from Tebogo Langerman, but he was denied by Gumede on the line.

In the 64th minute Edward Manqele forced another save from the Arrows goalkeeper before Mabaso headed just wide six minutes later.

Sandilands was called into action again in the 74th minute, palming a free-kick from Tshepo Liphoko over the crossbar, before blocking another good shot from Ntuli 10 minutes later.

In the final minutes there was end to end action as Nyasha Mushekwi forced a good save from Gumede in the 86th minute, before Manqele saw his effort coming off the inside of the post a minute later.

Then in the 89th minute Arrows almost capitalised from another quick break which saw Gabuza breaking free on the right, but he failed to grab his brace and a late winner as he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

To all Mamelodi Sundowns fans, I believe we have to base our feelings on understanding the beautiful game: now we are acting as if Pitso must win all the remaining games...that is not going to happen...(no team will win all the remaining games)...as for Pitso, yes we may have been wrong for allowing feelings to take over: but it's like a knife that cuts in both ways....our players have to instill a winning mindset: we understand though that this is a new thing for the boys (taking into consideration where we are coming from)....but on the real, we mustn't expect miracles....ONE STEP AT A TIME, AND ONE GAME AT A TIME....After all, we should be proud of our display though there is still work to be done upfront....

Only a zebra idiot can try to make fun of the way we played last night. Our problem only started in the las 5 minutes when we played with 4 strikers and 6 defenders, without a midfielder. So idiotic zebras were bored by our performance last night because the only time sundowns pleases them is when we lose. Well, le sa tlo swaba ditoko ke lena!

Yewena bhari we don't care about small teams like sundowns if they win or score 24 goals or lose we don't care. We are on de driving seat we wana pay 100% concerntration.

K4L : let's hear++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++if you don't care, then what are you doing, making zebra comments on a Downs article? Tikoloshi ke wena! Be truthful, you get wet each time sundowns lose, that's how much of a saddist you are. What are you doing here, if you don't care?

...and mina I'm convinced that Mamelodi Sundowns is playing attracting football than any other P.S.L team: they can shout, scream for all we care....position 4 is what we will get this season and next season...you do the math, mntanasekhaya: thina we were already written off as playing in the Premiership next season but the signs and reality don't reflect that: we will finish on the high: as for our coach, Downs players need such coach, who calls a spade a spade not a digging tool...the reason why Neeskens didn't succeed at Downs (Protecting the ungrateful players)....put them on the bench Pitso:

@ The Game I fully agree with you, sundowns plays beautiful footbal exactly what we Masundawana want to see. Let us not worry about stupid Zebras, they are not used to be where they are on the log.
Barcelona style of play and attitude was not archieved in a season it takes time.

I am of the belief that these Pretoria stadiums are a curse to us. We can play very well but we never win in them. The other contributing factor is this Sandilands guy. He likes leaving his posts unnecessarily and thus giving the opponents a chance to score. I don't really know where and when shall get a real goalkeeper, not this moegoe. KBY
