Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United in League clash

Posted: 14 December 2012 Time: 21:52

Orlando Pirates dialled up the pressure on Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs with a 2-1 win over 10-man Maritzburg United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night.

The Buccaneers, thanks to goals from Oupa Manyisa and Andile Jali, have pulled level with Amakhosi on 31 points at the top of the table but remain in second due to an inferior goal difference. The Team of Choice, who had Ruben Cloete sent off early in the second half, scored their consolation goal through Cuthbert Malajila.

After a competitive first 30 minutes, Pirates broke the deadlock: Daine Klate wriggled free of the attentions of Rheece Evans down the right flank before picking out an unmarked Oupa Manyisa at the far post. The midfielder controlled the cross before steering a low shot past goalkeeper Shu-aib Walters.

Maritzburg made a change at the start of the second half, with Evans making way for Thabang Matuka, and they nearly forced an equaliser in the 48th minute when goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa dropped a cross, but Terrence Mandaza was unable to get his attempted shot on target.

Yet on 50 minutes former Pirates defender Ruben Cloete let the Team of Choice down when he dived into a studs-up challenge on Thandani Ntshumayelo. Referee Daniel Bennett had no choice but to show him a red card, reducing the home side to 10 men.

Seven minutes later Pirates took full advantage with a speedy counter-attack before Collins Mbesuma provided a cross that was headed home by Andile Jali to make it 2-0.

With just over 10 minutes to play Maritzburg pulled a goal back. A Delron Buckley pass into the penalty area was only half-cleared by Happy Jele, teeing the ball up for Cuthbert Malajila to drive a shot into the top corner of the net and reduce the deficit to 2-1.

It's a win but not convinced at all, I am not really happy with our defence in particular Sangweni, in every goal conceded recently he's been caught watching. As for Mbuyane, the minute he came in, we were one man down, the poor touches and passes were pathetic to say the least. In short, after the second goal, we stopped playing.

Football talent developers have to investigate this question....

How can the brain of a 35 year old be fused with the energy of a 22 year old...?

Meritorious mention to Buckley.... he was really good....

King Jali AJ15, promised and delivered. The KING of the mid fiddler. We only started playing bad after he was substituted. Champions collect maximum points even on their worst perfomance.
Once and always.

For the first time in my life i saw a team playing against a 10 men team parking the bus. Sies !

As for the referee it was clear from the outset that he was rented. Well down MU for exposing those Rats.

The pressure is ON the balls of majoro

Hahahahahaahahahahah.......if Chiefs was a team to buckle under pressure theu would have done so last week when Chibuku went into the second half leading.

Chiefs will easily win their match tommorrow without the help of the referee.

Guys, MU is not an easy team 2 beat especially when playing home, any Zebra/Sundowns fan can attest to this. So whether the win is srappy or what what mina i dont care, jst happy that we are pushing Migodoyi to the edge of the seat, making them unstable.

You moer'ed all teams that beat Chiefs, but Chiefs has lost only once... Kwaaaaaaaa. The reverse is more applicable here. Chiefs might have moer'ed the teams that stabbed you...

The red card was a disgrace. Cloete went in studs up but did he touch the Chibuku player ? Daniel Bennet, DAniel Bennet tonite the whole of Mzansi knows you are in Ivan " The Chemist" Cossa's bloody pocket.

Congrats to Pirates 4 winning the Q2, (dikwena won't beat SSU)...nd Meyiwa shud work on handling set-pieces if he wants to keep being called up to Bafana Bafana!!

THe way Chibuku stole a win tonite makes me 100% convinced that the Mighty Amakhosi will win this lig with games to spare.

Funny thing is that Chibuku fans said they will bring us down on 08 Dec because all the teams in the PSL are weak now all of a sudden they have faith in weak teams like Tuks to do what they couldn't do.

FACT: With a bit of luck MU could have easily beaten Chibuku FC + DAniel Bennett.

These hobbos eat our fart in all areas? Their Chairman is nothing without Kaizer, Pirates is noting without Chiefs, their players eats our players fart in Bafana. After renting a ref they still to have 12 -players on de field while MU had 10 they are still at de bottom.
