Moroka Swallows beat Orlando Pirates ion Saturday night

Posted: 1 September 2012 Time: 22:08

Orlando Pirates endured a miserable evening at the hands of Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night, succumbing 3-0 to lose their first League match of the season.

Bennett Chenene, Mpho Maleka and Katlego Mashego scored the goals for the Birds, who further underlined their credentials as genuine contenders for silverware this season with a clinical performance that coach Zeca Marques will be delighted with.

Both teams attacked strongly from the early stages, with Swallows forcing goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa into a good save on five minutes when a Lerato Chabangu free-kick threatened to drift into the back of the net.

Two minutes later Oupa Manyisa provided a superb through-ball to put Sifiso Myeni in on goal, but the winger hesitated just long enough to allow Shere Lekgothoane to get back and make a goal-saving challenge.

Former Buccaneer Bennett Chenene should have opened the scoring in the 19th minute, only to blaze a volley off target, but just two minutes later he combined superbly with Siyabonga Nomvete before stabbing a low shot into the net via the inside of the post to make it 1-0 to the Birds.

Just past the half hour mark Pirates through they had drawn level when a point-blank header from Collins Mbesuma was only half-saved by Mathibe, but referee Phillip Tinyani waved play-on. Television replays showed the ball hadn’t crossed the goal line.

The Birds were dealt a major blow at the same time when Nomvete limped off after twisting his ankle, forcing coach Zeca Marques to replace his ace goal-scorer with substitute Mpho Maleka.

Yet the replacement got his name onto the score sheet six minutes into the second half, firing the ball into the corner of the net after a brilliant turn and pass in the ‘D’ of Pirates’ box from Chabangu; 2-0 Swallows.

Pirates responded by using all three substitutions around the hour mark, and Daine Klate – one of the trio withdrawn – had two great chances in the 58th minute but on both occasions he saw his efforts saved by Mathibe.

Any hope Bucs had of mounting a comeback were extinguished when another former player, Katlego Mashego, scored within seconds of coming on as a sub, coolly controlling the ball in the box before turning and scoring.

Game plan well executed by the Birds. stifled mildfield , Jali was not given space to play ,Swallows played very well with no pressure , with a smile no wonder they won. Jali and Manyisa justified why they should not be in National team .You cant blame the coach ,how many one on one they missed .their own fans should boo them off the field.THANKS TO THE BRILLIANT BIRDS, I WAS PROUD BIRD TO DAY.

I'm not surprised by Mathiba's heroics. Remember he is a product of Naturena. We develop number 1 goalkeepers for the national team. Whether u like it or not deal with it. Those of u who says the midgets should be included in Bafana squad,r u still singing the same song???

You cannot score in three games against Supersport and think that you will score against Swallows. Up the Birds, I told these neighbours from next that Swallows is capable of scoring more than two goals a match, and they can't.

I guess we had 2 solid years of celebrations whilst 15 other teams were crying weekly. It is a celebratory period for our arch enemies and I think it is expected. I wish everyone who is celebrating BUCS minor dip to really do so fully as this period will be short lived. There has been a lot of positives today really...

Congratulations to the Birds, you played effective soccer, whilst we dominated in all aspects.
