SuperSport UNited and Orlando Pirates draw

Posted: 22 August 2012 Time: 21:25

The second installment of the SuperSport United vs Orlando Pirates trilogy ended in another goalless draw at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Having drawn 0-0 in their MTN8 semi-final first leg match on Sunday, perhaps it is no surprise that the two teams again cancelled each other out again in the League.

They will meet in the second leg of the semi-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

SuperSport created the first clear scoring opportunity, with Franklin Cale teeing up Thabiso Nkoana in the penalty area in the eighth minute, but the youngster blasted his shot over the crossbar.

The hosts threatened again on the 20 minute mark when George Maluleka hit a shot on target from a 25-metre free-kick, but Senzo Meyiwa pulled off a good diving save to turn the ball away for a corner.

United looked dangerous from both open play and set-pieces, using the height of Mor Diouf, Nathan Paulse and co. to dominate from dead-ball situations against their notably shorter opponents.

Pirates gradually worked their way into the game after SuperSport's early dominance and began to find some joy down the flanks.

An attack originating down the right wing handed Andile Jali a shooting chance from just outside the box on 34 minutes, but he ballooned the effort over the crossbar.

Striker Collins Mbesuma, making his first start for Bucs, also had a couple of half chances in the dying minutes of the first half, but the teams went to the interval with the game locked at 0-0.

The deadlock was very nearly broken by Pirates just past the hour mark when a well struck free-kick from Mpho Makola rebounded off the crossbar, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams beaten all ends up.

Williams was replaced on the 70 minute mark by Rowen Fernandez, having succumbed to a head/neck injury he suffered in a collision with Mbesuma early in the second half.

In the 74th minute United wasted a good chance to take the lead, with Bevan Fransman shooting wide from a rebound after Meyiwa had palmed away Cale's long range shot from a free-kick.

Seven minutes later Nathan Paulse wasted two free headers in quick succession as Bucs' defence began to look a little ragged.

Yet it was the visitors who finished the stronger in added time, and substitute Thulasizwe Mbuyane had a 92nd minute shot well saved by Fernandez.

Champs our team played shit, but SSU played even more shit... They failed to capitalize from our weak performance, they will never beat us coz they are scared of us. Mbesuma and Makola need to up their game if they want to play for Pirates... Don't worry my fellow Bhakaniyas, we will advance to the final of the MTN8 and win it...

According to Pirates standards this is a bad result but on normal occasions Pirates is performing well. I mean a win and draw in the league and a home adavantage in the semis of a cup.

Njenje is tactically bankrupt and he is letting players lose tactical and positional discipline which is not good.

We need to start respecting people who did a lot to us in the past. I mean what is happening to Sox is not funny. Sox can win you any match on his own and i will like to stress this once more, SOX IS SUPPOSED TO BE A STARTER AT PIRATES AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

Mbesuma can't do Bennie's job.

Masuku is a good player but he should stop playing to impress us coz that will put more pressure on him.

We are under-utilizing Nsunda Myeni. He was free on most occasions but players decided to have many touches on the ball.

Like Champ Mgugudi said, the captain should also lead by talking to these boys. When Bennie is on the field you will never see these young boys playing for themselves but play for the team, which is what Lucky should do in the absence of BBM.

No one leaves Orlando Stadium alive.

Oh lastly before i forgot....Congradulations to the Zebras for winning the league once again after 2 games.

I trul can't see how Chibuku FC will break down SSU defence on Saturday. I can safely say if SS score first it will be all over for Chibuku FC. The only way they will win is thru a dubious penalty. Otherwise i see an easy win for SSU.

Chibuku FC you can quote me on this one; the only way you can win is thru a dubious penalty like the one you got against Celtic. Your team is just playing KAK. Dimpya ke lona !!!

Lets not panic Mabhakaniya,we always win cups irregardless of the coach we hv since our players know how 2 win.Njenje hs always bn this way even long b4,he starts well but end up being escorted by police van after a short while lol.We cant blame Mbesuma as he ws isolated,Makola playd as DM at FFS if i m nt mistaken bt we use him as a winger while we do hv natural wingers sitin on the bench. We also hv one striker in Bester bt he s nt given a chance n 2 me he can link wel wit one of the two bigmem (Benni n Mbesuma). Our coaches just dnt hv tactics, they just set the startin line up n thats it.
Having said that,we still gona win on Sataday n go on 2 defend our Cup with no coaches as usual.

The season is in its infancy, various teams will inevitably experience 'slow' start while others will hit the ground running, others will start poorly & gain momentum as the season progresses. Thats normal in football. League race is a marathon, not 4by4 relay nor sprint & it makes no sense to make too much noise after meagre 2games, you rather take it game by game than "urasele abanye" as if your 2game performance won or guarantees you league title. Congratulations to all the teams that started well, lets hope they havent released all their 'stamina' as they will need it when it matters most. Next up is MTN8,in case folks forgot, some teams are already out. Let the games continue.
