SuperSport UNited and Orlando Pirates draw

Posted: 22 August 2012 Time: 21:25

The second installment of the SuperSport United vs Orlando Pirates trilogy ended in another goalless draw at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Having drawn 0-0 in their MTN8 semi-final first leg match on Sunday, perhaps it is no surprise that the two teams again cancelled each other out again in the League.

They will meet in the second leg of the semi-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

SuperSport created the first clear scoring opportunity, with Franklin Cale teeing up Thabiso Nkoana in the penalty area in the eighth minute, but the youngster blasted his shot over the crossbar.

The hosts threatened again on the 20 minute mark when George Maluleka hit a shot on target from a 25-metre free-kick, but Senzo Meyiwa pulled off a good diving save to turn the ball away for a corner.

United looked dangerous from both open play and set-pieces, using the height of Mor Diouf, Nathan Paulse and co. to dominate from dead-ball situations against their notably shorter opponents.

Pirates gradually worked their way into the game after SuperSport's early dominance and began to find some joy down the flanks.

An attack originating down the right wing handed Andile Jali a shooting chance from just outside the box on 34 minutes, but he ballooned the effort over the crossbar.

Striker Collins Mbesuma, making his first start for Bucs, also had a couple of half chances in the dying minutes of the first half, but the teams went to the interval with the game locked at 0-0.

The deadlock was very nearly broken by Pirates just past the hour mark when a well struck free-kick from Mpho Makola rebounded off the crossbar, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams beaten all ends up.

Williams was replaced on the 70 minute mark by Rowen Fernandez, having succumbed to a head/neck injury he suffered in a collision with Mbesuma early in the second half.

In the 74th minute United wasted a good chance to take the lead, with Bevan Fransman shooting wide from a rebound after Meyiwa had palmed away Cale's long range shot from a free-kick.

Seven minutes later Nathan Paulse wasted two free headers in quick succession as Bucs' defence began to look a little ragged.

Yet it was the visitors who finished the stronger in added time, and substitute Thulasizwe Mbuyane had a 92nd minute shot well saved by Fernandez.

No need to press panic buttons Buccaneers. A draw away is not a bad result. SSP is one strong team. Saturday is a D-day (now that men are separated from boys). We just have to do everything to proceed to the final. Those goals will come. I rather celebrate winning silverware than just one game. Let's see who will laugh last!!! I will always remain a Buccaneer. Since 1937

To answer your question, yes, this team can bring the second star; but only under the guidance of a splendid coach that can not only get the best out his players, but also command and bring back discipline in the dressing room. Never during the time of Krol did you see players like Jali and Masendemutsa be so ill-filled and lacking in discipline.

It's high time we found a new coach, or else what Krol had worked so hard to build in three years is coming to a crumbling end!

To the Bucs family...

Champs never panic, we won the league with Palacios and I still believe that he will do a great job. We need to be patient. It would have been hard for any coach to plan to win all 3 games without compromising and being tactical in certain areas and that is exactly what the technical team have done.

From what I have seen so far, we have not played to our full potential yet, but we have not lost, which is a good sign of a great team, especially with all these new players coming into fray. I have no doubt that we will do well in all competitions. Relax champs , relax... Not a good game though

I want to compliment Super Sport united in our highly rated Lig. Really the have a passion and their commitment is amazing. 3 big teams in Mzansi take Ssport players but they still strong as a rock. This team played with the highly rated club almost 60mins with one man down but they never concede even a single goal.

Hayi Madoda credit must be given where is due, imagine if it was any other team playing with Pirate what would be a score not talking about duration of two 90mins with Pirate but not concede a single goal.

I'm looking forward for their last game on Sartuday nite , but Pirate be warn the 25th of Aug.

Im dissapointed at palacious tactics. Buying a new player does not mean that he is better than the old ones. How should you play masuku ahead of Segolela. I think Dr Khoza must do something about him the sooner the better. Last night game was extremely boring, i never seen that type of play from orlando pirates.Palaciouys is useless, Leal was better than him and Boa Morte was right about him.....Development is were he belong
