Mamelodi Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs in MTN8 match report

Posted: 5 August 2012 Time: 17:02

Mamelodi Sundowns produced a sparkling performance to thrash Kaizer Chiefs 4-1 in their MTN8 quarter-final at Loftus Stadium on Sunday.

Debut goals from Thamsanqa Sangweni, Tebogo Langerman and Edward Manqele, added to another strike from Lebohang Mokoena, handed the Brazilians a record win over Amakhosi, who scored a consolation goal through Reneilwe Letsholonyane, and also missed a late penalty.

Sangweni got his Sundowns career to a dream start when he connected with an inswinging corner from Teko Modise in the seventh minute, and powered home under pressure from a group of Chiefs defenders.

Six minutes later it was another set-piece struggle for Chiefs as they failed to clear out a corner-kick, and Langerman powered home a low left-footed shot from inside the box.

Two minutes later Siyabonga Nkosi tried a long-range shot with his weaker left foot from 30 yards, but it went straight into the hands of Wayne Sandilands.

In the 24th minute it was 3-0 to the home side.

Modise swung the ball into the box and Manqele headed on target; Itumeleng Khune saved, only for Mokoena to tap home from the rebound.

If Chiefs fans thought it was all over they were wrong, as Sundowns had one more goal in them before the interval.

From a counter-attack the Brazilians caught the Chiefs defence off guard as Modise crossed from the left wing and found the unmarked Manqele, who headed home from close range to make it 4-0 in the 37th minute.

At first Chiefs showed no hunger to get back into the match in the second half, while Sundowns continued to search for goals.

In the 64th minute, however, Chiefs had a free-kick from 25 yards, but Sandilands made a good save to deny Bernard Parker.

In the 72nd minute Chiefs had another chance when Parker sent a ball into the box, but Sthembiso Ngcobo headed wide from six yards, after the keeper had come out and certainly looked beaten.

Four minutes later Chiefs got their consolation goal when Ngcobo brought the ball back into the box, Parker shot, and the deflected ball fell onto the path of Letsholonyane, who finished from six yards out to make it 4-1.

There was drama late on when Chiefs earned a penalty in the 86th minute, after debutant defender Wayne Arendse was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Josta Dladla stepped up but to take the penalty but his shot hit the post, and despite eight minutes of added time Chiefs chould not add to their tally.

The Brazilians join Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Moroka Swallows in the semi-final draw on Monday morning.

Sundowns won't win anything this season, the defence is too shaky and the team is not fit, they lose concentration during the match. they will struggle with any of other 3 semifinalists. nonetheless congrats on the win.

"And lastly... on a fair note, Slim Kat should be the Bafana Bafana no 1 GK !"

I like and admire what you just wrote baba. To me, regardless of the fact that you support Chiefs, you're a CHAMP to me. Only someone with sense will write what you wrote. You're NOT a Zebra, you're a REAL Khosi. However, the same can't be said about the rest of your homies who will always remain grass grazing zebra animals.

Up the Bucs...

Virtually the whole SA diski world was buzzing with zebras excited at the news that Kaizer Chiefs Management might send out a tender to hire a company to build Twin Towers at very expensive cost which was largely sponsored by Vodacom. When Chiefs Marketing Director unveiled the ‘Twin Towers Plan’ along the new signees, it was met with ululations, excitement and vuvuzela blowing. It took certain izikhothane who were fresh from their Annual Swaziland trip to completely demolish the overrated Twin Towers within 37mins. It is believed that a sad and angry honourable Mr Motaung Snr has solicited the services of his friend, Iron Duke to send out his soldiers (where Mr Motaung got his military training) to avenge this embarrassment asap. Word on the streets has it that, strangely, fans of Kaizer Motaung Team wouldn’t like either to see Iron Duke`s soldiers to be the ones avenging their embarrassment but it’s said that Mr Motaung`s son has called fans to back off as it’s a family matter.
Stay tuned on the latest news on this.

Let me first start by congratulating Sundowns who clearly were more determined to win the game. They deserved to win yesterday. I wish them all the best for the rest of the tournament. I hope our management realize that we need a destroyer in that central midfield. As for our left back I will not waste my energy, Jimmy Jumbo does not deserve to wear that jersey. This stupid insistence of continuing playing with one striker boggles my mind, otherwise as long as there are lessons learnt in these situations we will continue to falter. Lastly, Pierats you should be ashamed as you know deep down in your hearts you won against Celtics through a dubious penalty. Your day of reckoning shall come come where your stinking mouths shall be shut forever and you condemned to the doldrums where you belong.

I hope the Mighty Buccaneers get Sundowns in the semi's. It would be nice to play them over two legs. Our "AA Batteries" (Andile and Ace) will be fully charged.

Stuart Baxter - 'the players lacked discipline, they were winning balls where they were not suppose to win' I am not very certain if he meant that. And whos job is that kahle kahle Mr Baxter? He looked confused. His statements are confusing. We expecting the opposite from his players. What a shame.

This game was lost on the bench (Technical Team). It's obvious 'Downs are the better team player for player but the 2 clowns wanted to go toe to toe with them. That's suicide. You can't beat Barcelona by trying to match them at their own game. Even worse, we had no strong anchor in the middle. Our fullbacks are weak. Ritchie is slow, Jambo is not intelligent, Gaxa (oh well). Svasiya is no fullback. Everything went awry ekse.
We should have played them on the counter. Eish. Khosi4life. I hope we don't get used to the 4 in Khosi4Life.
Well done kaboYellow. You deserved it
