Mamelodi Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs in MTN8 match report

Posted: 5 August 2012 Time: 17:02

Mamelodi Sundowns produced a sparkling performance to thrash Kaizer Chiefs 4-1 in their MTN8 quarter-final at Loftus Stadium on Sunday.

Debut goals from Thamsanqa Sangweni, Tebogo Langerman and Edward Manqele, added to another strike from Lebohang Mokoena, handed the Brazilians a record win over Amakhosi, who scored a consolation goal through Reneilwe Letsholonyane, and also missed a late penalty.

Sangweni got his Sundowns career to a dream start when he connected with an inswinging corner from Teko Modise in the seventh minute, and powered home under pressure from a group of Chiefs defenders.

Six minutes later it was another set-piece struggle for Chiefs as they failed to clear out a corner-kick, and Langerman powered home a low left-footed shot from inside the box.

Two minutes later Siyabonga Nkosi tried a long-range shot with his weaker left foot from 30 yards, but it went straight into the hands of Wayne Sandilands.

In the 24th minute it was 3-0 to the home side.

Modise swung the ball into the box and Manqele headed on target; Itumeleng Khune saved, only for Mokoena to tap home from the rebound.

If Chiefs fans thought it was all over they were wrong, as Sundowns had one more goal in them before the interval.

From a counter-attack the Brazilians caught the Chiefs defence off guard as Modise crossed from the left wing and found the unmarked Manqele, who headed home from close range to make it 4-0 in the 37th minute.

At first Chiefs showed no hunger to get back into the match in the second half, while Sundowns continued to search for goals.

In the 64th minute, however, Chiefs had a free-kick from 25 yards, but Sandilands made a good save to deny Bernard Parker.

In the 72nd minute Chiefs had another chance when Parker sent a ball into the box, but Sthembiso Ngcobo headed wide from six yards, after the keeper had come out and certainly looked beaten.

Four minutes later Chiefs got their consolation goal when Ngcobo brought the ball back into the box, Parker shot, and the deflected ball fell onto the path of Letsholonyane, who finished from six yards out to make it 4-1.

There was drama late on when Chiefs earned a penalty in the 86th minute, after debutant defender Wayne Arendse was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Josta Dladla stepped up but to take the penalty but his shot hit the post, and despite eight minutes of added time Chiefs chould not add to their tally.

The Brazilians join Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Moroka Swallows in the semi-final draw on Monday morning.

We'll have another peaceful week... all the animals haved been released to the forest. I wish to meet sundowns in the final. Now zebras, you know what to do. Support every team that plays against the undisputed champions. You will feel more pain... it's really good to see the zebras crying and holding their heads in pain. Once and always. Since 1937

That Sangweni guy looks a lot useful but worry not Jali will sort him out.

Probably we have to go back to the drawing board because of the social factor which was not there in the game against Sundowns. Need i ask again Makhosi do you still have a drawing board? When you are told your players are average we get insults. You went and bought defensive players as if your problem was conceding goals, it will take you time to have your defence playing as a team. Accept that and deal with it. As for your attack and midfield thats where your real problem is letting Nengomashe go without replacing him. The less said about Nkatha Parker accept you dont have a strike force.

Simply put you bought the wrong players.

The KC defends is taking the beating because there is no middfield anchor man like Nengomashe. Yeye and Nkosi are all over the show and are not defending in the middfieled.

Khune tried, the chimps players still thinks they are playing preseason.

The time is now khosi, your backs were against the wall from the first minute. All the players are relaxed and they know there is not internal competition in the team, the same cant be sad for the DTC and Dunusa fc where there is quality on the bench. Where is the Vodacom money? Rise now and make your demands known, otherwise you will be joining Bra Jomo Sono.

without taking anything from a gud team Sundowns, Chiefs players I think they read newspapers a lot than us(fans). They have a very gud defence team so they are not using their available resources, thinking automatically everything will fall into place. this is going to players who assumed themselves to be a better defence force.

No learning and applying requires one to use his or her mind.

Greetings of the new season Makhosi. What a sad way to start a season.

Shit happens. Makhosi let,s just accept that we played badly and deserved the hammering.

Contrary to what some ppl think I really don,t think our defense was totally at fault. Let us not make the mistake of thinking that very goal conceded iis the fault of defenders. Sangweni is a midfielder so where was the midfielder who was supposed to be shadowing this guy ?This was simply sundowns,s day. Much as they deserved to win I don,t think they totally outplayed us as the shoreline suggest. Let,s forget about today,s result and look forward to the season. I still believe that Mathoho and Gould will combine well as he season progresses.

Khoi for life.

I think the toothless one with his brown envelope is responsible for the demise of NaZoorena Zebras, all fingers are pointing at him. As for operation 'Teka Hinkwaswo' they meant Macufe, Black Label & Gauteng Cup, they cannot achieve that now but double is a posibility becuase MacowsFe Cup still need to be played. Kwaaakwaaa!!! I'm enjoying myself, there is peace in Mzansi!!!!
