Mamelodi Sundowns beat Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup

Posted: 5 May 2012 Time: 22:03

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated 10-man Free State Stars 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night to secure a place in the 2012 Nedbank Cup final.

The Brazilians were handed the game on a plate when Stars’ Dove Wome earned an early red card, allowing the hosts to rack up two quick goals through Richard Henyekane and Nyasha Mushekwi before cruising through the rest of the match.

They will face either SuperSport United or AmaZulu (who face off in the second of the semifinals in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon) in the final at Orlando Stadium on May 26.

The first notable incident in the match arrived in the 20th minute and it proved to be its defining point. Wome stamped down on Esrom Nyandoro’s knee in an act of blatant violent conduct, leaving referee Jerome Damon no choice but to show the Togolese forward a straight red card.

Sundowns soon took advantage of their numerical superiority, as on 26 minutes Richard Henyekane scored from close range. The credit for the opening goal really belonged to Nyasha Mushekwi, who did all the hard in work in setting it up by providing a perfect low cross from the left flank.

Just past the half hour mark Mushekwi made it 2-0, finding space in-between Stars’ centre-backs before sweeping home a pin-point pass from left-back Punch Masenamela to put Mamelodi Sundowns very much in charge of the match.

The Zimbabwean striker thought he had added to his side’s advantage just five minutes later when he steered another shot beyond the reach of Mweene, but he was flagged offside. Television replays suggested it was the correct decision from match officials.

Teko Modise very nearly scored the Brazilians’ third goal just a couple of minutes before half time, but a superb reaction save from Mweene ensured the score remained at 2-0 heading into the interval.

The Zambian ‘keeper came up with another terrific stop on the hour mark, this time to deny Henyekane, while a couple of minutes later Stars had their first shot in anger when Paulus Masehe pulled the trigger from long range but saw his effort skew high and wide of the target.

That was all the visitors offered in attack, even though coach Steve Komphela introduced an extra attacker off the bench in the shape of Boitumelo Sekgobela. Sundowns easily saw out the match to book a place in the final of a competition they last won in 2008.

Sundowns: Sandilands; Maponyane, Xulu (Mwanjale 90+1’), Daniels, Masenamela, Modise, Moriri, Nyandoro, Shongwe (Zwane 72’), Mushekwi (Mphela 83’), Henyekane

Stars: Mweene; Makola, Sadate, Gege, Gcaba, Mashaba (Sekgobela 70’), Masehe, Wiltwer, Mashego, Wome, Manqele

@All Flops fans..............Remember what ever homany goals your team scored witout conceding, remember 24 of them were scored aganst an amature side. Also remember that in a cup competition the # of goals scored does not count but result.Remember how many goals were scored by teams like argentina,Germany etc etc during 2010 WC.But Spain and Holland were winning by 1 goal margin hence they played in the final with Spain winning.Anyway i congratulate you again.

Diehardbucs, Vez'ikhanda, 1937 - You are all FAIR and SQUARE. And thank you for your comments guys. Your (earlier) comments make sense.

As for the stupid Cebo Manyapelo, "the lose" said about him the better... please read further to understand the question of "the lose". That moron hates Downs. For example, when Downs were playing Chiefs he laboured on the point that there are 14 internationals yet they have been beaten by Chiefs with Khune as the country's No 1. Cebo is stupid because he also forgets that the "internationals" have also two feet, and this is not rugby where you can field over 14 players at once, but 11.

Well, but I rolled with laughter yesterday when the stupid Cebo handed over to Deshi on national television and said "Free State Stars should make sure that "the lose" does not look bad. Mhmmm....does this moron have a matric? Or he was craving cigarates manje wayesecabanga nge-loose. The last time I checked mina bengazi ukuthi kuthiwa yi-loss. As we were wininng yesterday, he laboured on telling us about Chelsea having won and other unimportant things, . To you Cebo, you are a moron, period. As to how you made it into Auckland Park with your "Inglish" is a mystery to me. Go back to Grade 4, Cebo.

Congratulations to Sundows FC for reaching the finals with a narrow win against FSS.

Discipline, commitment and ambition?? Wome was the moemish of the tournament for costing his team the nedbank cup. They have no one to blame but Wome.

A disciplined, committed and ambitious will never do something like that, more especially in the early stages of the game. So far wome has done well for FSS this season, BUT what he did cancels ALL the good things he's done.

Hardy Steve and the team. In the 2nd stanza they regrouped and one must command them for showing character, when sundows scored two early goals, I thought it was gonna rain goals but Mwene kept fighting.

Khosi I am. Thank you for the beautiful game of football. Instead of bobby bringing us the Mushekwi's, he bring us Katsande, Jumbo, zayva's.

Congrats are in order the mighty CHOKERS FC.

Just a piece of reminder though I will be attacked.

1. Sunflops have a horrible history and record @ Orlando, whether that will change or not it remains to be seen.

2. Sunflops always struggle against any of their potential opponents, i.e. Usuthu and SSU.

3. They have a bad omen in their midst who also happen to be their 'el kapitano' who has never tasted a cup glory in fact any glory. What makes them to think they'll win it when he's around? Why should it happen for the first time now?

4. Lastly, their coach, Nespray, always make wrong choices at crucial stages like what he did against Amakhosikasi, Platinum Stars and Maritzburg. I will not be surprised if once again he flop with his selection in a crucial cup final.

Anyway, good luck.

I think the editor mistakenly undermines the complexity of a football match by saying Wome's red card handed the game to Sundowns on a plate. To say the game was handed to Sundowns on a plate is controversial and a bit over the top. You rather say the incident gave Sundowns an advantage. It is not given that a 10 men team will always lose

Pirates 3 leageu titles and more than 6 major cups
Supersport 3 league title more than 5 major cups
Chiefs 2 league titles more than 6 mojor cups
Sundowns 2 league titles more than 3 major cups(Nedbank, Mtn8 and something else)
