Mamelodi Sundowns beat Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup

Posted: 5 May 2012 Time: 22:03

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated 10-man Free State Stars 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night to secure a place in the 2012 Nedbank Cup final.

The Brazilians were handed the game on a plate when Stars’ Dove Wome earned an early red card, allowing the hosts to rack up two quick goals through Richard Henyekane and Nyasha Mushekwi before cruising through the rest of the match.

They will face either SuperSport United or AmaZulu (who face off in the second of the semifinals in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon) in the final at Orlando Stadium on May 26.

The first notable incident in the match arrived in the 20th minute and it proved to be its defining point. Wome stamped down on Esrom Nyandoro’s knee in an act of blatant violent conduct, leaving referee Jerome Damon no choice but to show the Togolese forward a straight red card.

Sundowns soon took advantage of their numerical superiority, as on 26 minutes Richard Henyekane scored from close range. The credit for the opening goal really belonged to Nyasha Mushekwi, who did all the hard in work in setting it up by providing a perfect low cross from the left flank.

Just past the half hour mark Mushekwi made it 2-0, finding space in-between Stars’ centre-backs before sweeping home a pin-point pass from left-back Punch Masenamela to put Mamelodi Sundowns very much in charge of the match.

The Zimbabwean striker thought he had added to his side’s advantage just five minutes later when he steered another shot beyond the reach of Mweene, but he was flagged offside. Television replays suggested it was the correct decision from match officials.

Teko Modise very nearly scored the Brazilians’ third goal just a couple of minutes before half time, but a superb reaction save from Mweene ensured the score remained at 2-0 heading into the interval.

The Zambian ‘keeper came up with another terrific stop on the hour mark, this time to deny Henyekane, while a couple of minutes later Stars had their first shot in anger when Paulus Masehe pulled the trigger from long range but saw his effort skew high and wide of the target.

That was all the visitors offered in attack, even though coach Steve Komphela introduced an extra attacker off the bench in the shape of Boitumelo Sekgobela. Sundowns easily saw out the match to book a place in the final of a competition they last won in 2008.

Sundowns: Sandilands; Maponyane, Xulu (Mwanjale 90+1’), Daniels, Masenamela, Modise, Moriri, Nyandoro, Shongwe (Zwane 72’), Mushekwi (Mphela 83’), Henyekane

Stars: Mweene; Makola, Sadate, Gege, Gcaba, Mashaba (Sekgobela 70’), Masehe, Wiltwer, Mashego, Wome, Manqele

The only time I will watch Nyaope fc is when all the Dstv channels are playing it..

I mean this team plays for fun, scoring 4 them is not the main focus...

Remember in the 1st round against the big boys, the finished a match without a short on target *spiting *

Ka bo Yellow Masandawana Ka bo Yellow! Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. marches on to the final. I'm happy about this win.

Well done to the boys and the technical team for regrouping and winning this game against the so called "GIANT-KILLERS", lets use this win to clinch the league with up coming fixtures.

Sir Neeskens keep introducing young stars in this Yellow setup cause the future is now. You're good coach.

Well done again and please keep it up! YELLOW!

Shongwe is a star in de making. Sisazodla abantu ngaye. My concern is dat sundowns is no FET 101 college. Iyntwana ziyakhawatheka blind if zibhayiza lapha.
Let's luk at Zwane when he was introduced and luk at him now. It luk lyk wenza the thing ezikufeylisayo kwi-sundowns. To play for yourself. There was no need to take dat shots as killer was in de ryt position. Against Wits in de last 16 he did it more dan once. My concern Dawane is, we can hav dis talented players. But bayasphoxa ngokuhluleka to handle de fame and pressure dat cum wit playing for downs.
As for Mamponyane, I think we need to giv him tym. Uzoba grand naye. I will lyk to catch another glimpse of lentwana yakwa-Jules

It painful for up de mdidids members to witness yellow enza adume ngazo. 30 goals scored( 0 conceded) and still counting.
Abosdididi only manage to scored 2 goals. The first 1 was a push by a 40 year old sebentini( umthungi weymbadada wase-hostel) on a 16 year old school boy.
The other 1 was a gift from the rotten SAFA house as the referee added 6 minutes from nowhere( the durban curry klate was a beneficiary on de day)

To cut de short story shorter. Amakakaniya @lordjerry will never scored 30 goals in a competition without conceding. As soon as nedbank announced dat they will giv 2K for every goal scored. Charity and colonel zinyo lemfene re lyk water and oil. Abahlangani

Linky, please analyse de game fairly an stop 2 b on one-sided mind. Dat guy of FSS, he deliberately jumped 2 Nyadoro which was clearly a red card. I know very well dat Chiefs n Pirates supporters were against Sundowns last nite. Steve Khopela admitted dat his player deserve a red card 4 de wrong doing.
