Mamelodi Sundowns beat Maritzburg United

Posted: 14 April 2012 Time: 17:24

Mamelodi Sundowns became the first team to book their place in the semifinals of the 2012 Nedbank Cup with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Maritzburg United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Goals from Lebohang Mokoena and Nysaha Mushekwi – the Zimbabwean’s ninth of the tournament – saw the Brazilians to a deserved victory.

The Team of Choice battled bravely, but they were too defensive from the outset and offered little in the way of attacking threat.

Maritzburg were the first to threaten a goal, with Mor Diouf powering a header on target from a corner kick in the sixth minute, but goalkeeper Calvin Marlin made an excellent point-blank save at his far post.

Marlin’s counterpart Shu-aib Walters was given decent protection by his backline, though he did have a couple of long-range efforts from Surprise Moriri and Teko Modise to deal with.

Sundowns eventually took the lead on 38 minutes. A quick free-kick from Moriri put Mokoena into a good shooting position and the attacker beat Walters at his near post with a stinging drive.

Early in the second half Katlego Mphela should have doubled the Brazilians’ advantage. Modise and Mokoena combined to set the striker up with a clear shooting chance in the box, but he blasted his effort wide of the target.

Mphela soon made way for Mushekwi, having seemingly done some damage to his hamstring which necessitated the change.

With 20 minutes to play United’s Walters kept his side in the game with a superb finger-tip save, deflecting over the crossbar a fiercely-hit Esrom Nyandoro shot that looked destined to ripple the back of the net.

But on 75 minutes there was nothing Walters could do to stop Mushekwi sweeping home a low shot with his left foot, as the Zimbabwean netted his ninth goal in the 2012 Nedbank Cup to take the score to 2-0 and effectively kill off Maritzburg’s challenge.

Things went from bad to worse for the Team of Choice when Rheece Evans was sent off in the last minute of regulation time, picking up his second yellow card for hauling down Richard Henyekane just outside the penalty area.

Sundowns: Marlin; Mapuru, Daniels, Mwanjale, Masenamela, Nyandoro, Moriri (Kekana 79’), Modise, Mokoena, Mphela (Mushekwi 54’), Pelembe (Henyekane 69’)

United: Walters; Booysen, Hendricks, Diouf, Evans, Petersen (Ncubeni 62’), Madondo, Morton, Matuka, Matle (Zulu 72’), Sibisi (Malajila 62’)

To me if Sundowns win their games in Nedbank I'm happy coz I know somewhere when it gets to end they will get confused and loose focus in the league therefore gives the Bucs a realistic chance of topping them on the league.
Also better for them to win the Nedbank than our Farmers neighbours.

We should take this cup with easy, happy to see Nyandoro but i would prefer Zwane to substitute Moriri or Nyandoro not Kekane. Other than that happy to be Sadawana.

Swetys..reality is Dawana have an uphill battle in both the league and Nedbank.surely we will drop some points but I've realise that winning the league is not the same as winning cup games.
When my beloved Pirates finish 3 times as second best especially during the time of Krol.we, Mabhakaniya had hope so much & believed that we must win the league at all cost but guess what, sometimes its not about the skillful and talented players you have but the never say die attitude of your players something Sundowns players doesn't have!!
Tell me,how many times did your Sundowns come back to claim a draw or win at the death as opposed to Bucs. They call it resilience and only few humans beings have that and we are blessed at Bucs we have that.as much as I hate to mention Krol's name but that's one thing he instill in our players.
However I wish your Dawana a good run in the Nedbank!!

Eish Nyaope fc won.....

Ooh just remembered I dont know anyone who supports this team... So the noise levels are the same as any other day.

Its good I dont stay at Nyaope world, FSS will win this 6 million rand trophy, remember Pirates has over 12 million in prize money this season...

We are getting 75 million from Vodacom per year, 11 million from SAB and 5 million from Peogeot plus substantial gatetakings plus Psl money well all in all Pirates is taking about 115 million per year.... Lets not mention merchandise..

I love it When Black and White unite to form Pirates...
