Mamelodi Sundowns beat Bidvest Wits in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 25 March 2012 Time: 16:53

Nyasha Mushekwi scored both goals as Mamelodi Sundowns eased into the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Zimbabwean striker has now racked up eight goals in the competition, having scored half a dozen in the Brazilians’ record 24-0 win over Powerlines FC in the previous round, but his scoring performance was the highlight of an otherwise uninspired showing from Johan Neeskens’ side.

The visitors never really got going in midfield or attack, allowing the Clever Boys to enjoy the lion’s share of possession for most of the match, but they proved efficient up front thanks to Mushekwi converting the only two real clear chances he had in the match.

Wits worked hard to ensure Sundowns weren’t able to settle into their usual passing game, and the home side’s quick attacks almost resulted in an early goal for Asive Langwe, who shot wide of the target in the fourth minute.

Yet on 19 minutes ‘Downs opened up Wits defence with such ease, as a diagonal ball set Richard Henyekane free down the left flank, who in turn pulled a pass back from the by-line for Nyasha Mushekwi to sweep home the opening goal of the match.

The second half continued in much the same manner, with Wits dominating ball possession but struggling to create chances, while Sundowns were pretty content at sitting back and looking to hit the home team on the counter.

Sandilands was called into one notable piece of action on the hour mark, coming quickly off his line to dive bravely at the feet of Bhongo Jayiya as the speedy attacker got in behind Sundowns’ defence.

With just under 20 minutes to play, ‘Downs took advantage of a poor piece of play by substitute David De Oliveira to make it 2-0. The Wits midfielder strangely tried to dribble inside his own penalty area but was dispossessed by Mushekwi, who duly buried his second goal of the day and killed off the game as a contest.

Wits: Baron; Gumede (Pule 63’), Batabaire, Mabizela, Phungwayo, Masalesa, Timm (De Oliveira 67’), Jayiya, Sib. Vilakazi (Sif. Vilakazi 79’), Langwe, Koapeng

Sundowns: Sandilands; Ngubane, Mwanjale, Xulu, Masenamela, Kekana, Nyandoro, Zwane, Mokoena (Mphela 73’), Mushekwi (Shongwe 90+1’), Henyekane (Laffor 82’)

Its good to see your team doing well lets hope next time it will be same result.Bad luck to those who lost their games previously. I don't know what going on in Dasa's mind rite now, because I heared him couple of days ago saying Sdowns will win the lig but he is there on the competition. He didn't comment about his team (Wats).That shows he doesn't know whether his club is going or coming.That why he lost todays game because Dasa is a great supporter of Sdowns.

I will say we played well under the circumstances. The ground was way too small to play our normal game.

@our defence
Hands up to our back4 and Rambo. We are no longer conceding dos silly goals like b4, yes there is a room for improvement. I am happy, very happy

U re just stressed, Njenje is not a gud husband after all. Even Middendorb is far better than him.

@To dose who re busy calling for nyatama

I respect yo personal opinions, but guys can we be happy for the players that came in and use their chances when Nyatama got injured. Am talking abt the likes of themba zwane, kekane, modise

Congratulations are in order for Flops. They play like champs in the making. I will therefore not be surprised if they clinch this trophy with this winning mentality instilled by the Dutch coach.

With regards to my team, I guess cracks were bound to show up and results like yesterday's one weren't much of a surprise to many of us. I know I may sound like starting with excuses but honestly I am not instead just stating fact/s. Consider the following as part of my reasons i.r.o the above statement;

1. OPFC played more games than any other team and fatigue was their big enemy and yesterday, in fact starting with the Santos game they showed that.

2. Changing of coaches has a huge effect that many people can't spot but it often takes a person with vast experience and good brain of football to see that.

However, I still see them putting enormous pressure on the current log leaders which essentially imply that they can ultimately pull it off. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise to be knocked off in order to channel our energy to what matters most, ABSA PSL Trophy.

I am still black regardless of what...the march for the PSL goes on...
