Late goals from Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mashego handed Supersport United a 3-1 win over Orlando Pirates in an entertaining Absa Premier League match played at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Siboniso Gaxa had given the hosts an early lead with a spectacular long range effort before former United midfielder Teko Modise equalised with a brilliant free kick in the 79th minute.
Supersport threatened early, with Katlego Mphela rattling goalkeeper Francis Chansa’s post in the fourth minute, and just two minutes later Gaxa beat Bennett Chenene to a loose ball in midfield, surged forward and unleashed a stunning shot that nestled in the top corner of the goal to give the hosts the lead.
Chansa was then forced into a brave save at the feet of Katlego Mphela in the 11th minute after the striker burst free of the Pirates defence with a surging run into the penalty area and Dennis Masina put a snap shot just wide of goal as United seemed able to open up their opponent’s defence at will.
The hosts continued to play with great invention, particularly down the right flank where Masina and Mphela often combined well, but slowly Pirates began to have a greater say in the game, with Teko Modise firing over Andre Arendse’s crossbar just before half time after some incisive build up play by the Buccaneers.
Pirates began the second half well, with Chenene, Excellent Walaza and substitute Tlou Segolela combining to create a couple of worrying moments for Supersport coach Gavin Hunt, but his defence held firm.
Shane Poggenpoel fired a long distance shot just wide of goal on the hour mark, reminding Pirates that the hosts still posed a significant threat going forward, even though it was the Buccaneers who were having most of the play by this stage.
Modise duly brought Pirates level with just under ten minutes to play, scoring a superb goal direct from a free kick some 25 metres out that gave Andre Arendse no chance.
But Supersport replied in the best possible fashion, with defender Bongani Khumalo heading home at the near post from a corner just two minutes after Modise had scored against his former team.
Pirates pushed hard for an equaliser, with Sibusiso Mahlangu bailing Supersport out with a goal line clearance from Tonic Chabalala’s towering header.
The hosts sealed their third win in the Absa Premier League when substitute Mashego fired home a left footed drive from the edge of the box in the first minute of injury time.
