Supersport have fine win over Pirates

Posted: 14 November 2007 Time: 22:27

Late goals from Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mashego handed Supersport United a 3-1 win over Orlando Pirates in an entertaining Absa Premier League match played at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Siboniso Gaxa had given the hosts an early lead with a spectacular long range effort before former United midfielder Teko Modise equalised with a brilliant free kick in the 79th minute.

Supersport threatened early, with Katlego Mphela rattling goalkeeper Francis Chansa’s post in the fourth minute, and just two minutes later Gaxa beat Bennett Chenene to a loose ball in midfield, surged forward and unleashed a stunning shot that nestled in the top corner of the goal to give the hosts the lead.

Chansa was then forced into a brave save at the feet of Katlego Mphela in the 11th minute after the striker burst free of the Pirates defence with a surging run into the penalty area and Dennis Masina put a snap shot just wide of goal as United seemed able to open up their opponent’s defence at will.

The hosts continued to play with great invention, particularly down the right flank where Masina and Mphela often combined well, but slowly Pirates began to have a greater say in the game, with Teko Modise firing over Andre Arendse’s crossbar just before half time after some incisive build up play by the Buccaneers.

Pirates began the second half well, with Chenene, Excellent Walaza and substitute Tlou Segolela combining to create a couple of worrying moments for Supersport coach Gavin Hunt, but his defence held firm.

Shane Poggenpoel fired a long distance shot just wide of goal on the hour mark, reminding Pirates that the hosts still posed a significant threat going forward, even though it was the Buccaneers who were having most of the play by this stage.

Modise duly brought Pirates level with just under ten minutes to play, scoring a superb goal direct from a free kick some 25 metres out that gave Andre Arendse no chance.

But Supersport replied in the best possible fashion, with defender Bongani Khumalo heading home at the near post from a corner just two minutes after Modise had scored against his former team.

Pirates pushed hard for an equaliser, with Sibusiso Mahlangu bailing Supersport out with a goal line clearance from Tonic Chabalala’s towering header.

The hosts sealed their third win in the Absa Premier League when substitute Mashego fired home a left footed drive from the edge of the box in the first minute of injury time.

why does Owen has to tempr with the winning combination, we were almost having a sigh of relief...Chansa is a flop, he's been given too many chances, and he cost us too much...put him on transfer and look for a new keeper

Well done to you Gavin Hunt I'm sure you slept well for a change last night, just keep motivating your boys I was starting to get worried about your stress level, as for you ODG please please don't make us to start criticising you Pirates is a very good team and you are not Benitez so stop coping and changing a winning team, I think Walaza & Masehe did well against Sundowns also I think you need to cut your squad into a manageable size so that you don't confuse yourself in future with people like Chansa & Ramudzuli you might end up thinking they are football players and start fielding them on the 24.11.07 again

We have seen it, and some heard of it, but how on hell you manage to grab 1 point from your opponent and end up giving it back like the way our defence including Keeper let us down against SSport.
Our defence is the weakest in the PSL. I think we are the only team that conceded more goals in the dying minutes of the games.
Think of Bartlett's goal, Mhlongo's goal, and now is Mashego.
Our Bucs guys loose concentration and focus during the dying minutes. They must just play their hearts out until they hear the whistle. FIFA must start introducing a caution for players who acts like Linesmen by raising their hand instead of playing. If We defend like this I am telling you Chiefs will crush us like hammer on ice, and remember this derby will be shown worldwide.
Come on guns.

Pirates players are really pathetic........the only commiteed players in the team are Teko and Senzo. Others are just like clothes in a fashion shop ready to be sold.......ODG get rid of all those cows and get real men who are willing to fight for the pride of AMABHOKOBHOKO ( oooooouuuch -- i mean't amaBhakhaniya).

Owen should give Gerald Modabi a chance the boy is too good to be on transfer list,he is the same as moriri.he have good first touch, control the ball, freekicks. It time for pirates to stop making excuses about lack of experience and calling their player young stars.if they are young they are just young player not stars.
