Orlando Pirates draw with Libolo

Posted: 3 March 2012 Time: 18:00

Orlando Pirates have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League preliminary round following their 1-1 draw with Recreativo do Libolo of Angola on Saturday afternoon at the Patrice Lumumba Stadium.

Bucs went into this match on the back foot, having lost 3-1 in the first leg two weeks ago in Port Elizabeth.

The reigning PSL champions needed to score three goals without reply to progress and it was no surprise when they went on the offensive from the first whistle, but the task was not made easy by Libolo who played a 5-3-2 formation from the onset.

However, it was Libolo who took the lead in the 35th minute when their skipper Maieco Henrique, who bagged a brace in the first leg, scored with a header from a corner kick.

Libolo’s lead was shortlived though, as Bucs finally got the breakthrough via the boot of Andile Jali, who pulled one back for Bucs from close range on the stroke of halftime.

Pirates needed three goals in the second half to at least force the match into extra time and Bucs coach Julio Leal brought in Tokelo Rantie for Bongani Ndulula in the 52nd minute.

Six minutes Benni McCarthy replaced Dikgang Mabalane and Pirates continued to press forward.

Pirates thought they had scored in the 71st minute through Siyabonga Sangweni from a cross by Oupa Manyisa, but the goal was disallowed after McCarthy was adjudged to have been offside when Manyisa played the ball.

Despite putting up a gallant fight Pirates couldn’t get the goals they needed and Libolo won 4-2 on aggregate to send Bucs packing.

Pirates line-up: Josephs - Nzunga, Cloete [Mhlongo 88th], Mahamutsa, Sangweni - Jali, Mabalane [McCarthy 58th], Manyisa, Segolela - Mbuyane, Ndulula [Rantie 52nd]

@ Champ Toad.....I like your judgement Bhakaniya. I think we're in the same boat . On my side I don't see my team(Chiefs) winning Nedbank and the League. We're just adding numbers in the PSL. It's just that I was born a Khosi and will die a Khosi noma kanjani but the truth is we're not playing good football and we don't have good players.

If I was a Orlando Pirates hater, like a lot the individuals who put up comments on blogs with OPFC stories. I would be would be very unhappy that Pirates was knocked out, because now Pirates can focus all their energies on their domesic games, this means the Nedbank cup and league r going to Parktown and the hopes they have for their teams to win something have all but vanished.

Hard luck Mabhakaniya. Now lets go for the league and Nedbank. We cannot win all of them and I mean the last time we lost in a cup game (knock out) was back in 2010 in December, other than that in past 18 months you have won 18 out of 20 knock out games. So that is a commendable achievement. Otherwise we are still happy people. Leal is blessed to have this talented crop of players but he is definitely not a good coach. His team selection leaves a lot to be desired.

@Pheya, as I said, support him if you want with your membership card.

I always go to our home games. After our last league game on wednesday I made it clear on this forum that I won't go watch Pirates again until they start entertaining me. On wednesday we were frustrated on the stands hence we called for Benni to be brought in.

I don't mind winning ugly sometimes but to consistantly play crap/kak football week-in and week-out is not acceptable to me.

I chose to support Pirates because they have always played attractive football. When they failed to do so the coaches were fired irrespective of their achievements.

There is thing wrong perception that Pirates lost in CAF Cup. It's not true, they lost in the PRELIMINARY! And this is not the reflection of soccer in SA, certain clubs in SAan [lay better than this.

Chibuku Fc are a disgrace to Mzansi soccer. But this is not surprising for a team that shud not have not have won the lig in the first place. I,m sure Ajax wud have done much betta than these donkeys.

It's always easy to blame leal for the failure of the team.
Perhaps the rats should admit that their players aren't good enough. Sundowns once made the mistake of thinking that having a pool of 50+ players will make them conquer africa- this season rats have made the same mistake even though leal made it public that he wants atmost 30 players for a manageable squad.
Today more than 25 disgruntled players want the coach out because of lack of opportunity on the playing field.
It must be said that changing coaches for pirates isn't the solution because you'll still have 25+ players who will be sidelines in favour of others.
Khoza needs to do away with a lot of players if he wants peace at his club.
Motsepe made the mistake of letting go of Stoichkov because of disgruntled lazy players- khoza should not make the same mistake when he in fact created the problem.
Anyway, pirates played the same boring football after krol, don't be fooled by your emotions.
