Sangweni spares Orlando Pirates’ blushes in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 10 March 2012 Time: 22:19

Siyabonga Sangweni scored a late goal as Orlando Pirates advanced to the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Ethekwini Coastal FC.

The competition’s defending champions were expected to cruise to a comfortable victory, but a brave performance from the fourth-tier hosts, particularly their goalkeeper Celi Ndwandwe who claimed the Man of the Match prize, meant the Buccaneers had to sweat to claim the win.

Pirates dominated the game from early on, but it was Ethekwini who almost took a lead inside the first 10 minutes, with midfielder Sihle Ndluli unlucky to see his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Thabo Matlaba after ghosting past Moeneeb Josephs.

From then on it was the Buccaneers who looked likely to find the back of the net, as they dominated the middle of the park and made effective use of their wide players, but Ndwandwe proved a difficult man to beat.

On 16 minutes he produced a great diving save to turn away a swerving long-range shot from Oupa Manyisa, and six minutes later he showed great reactions to keep out a Benni McCarthy header.

Pirates thought they had scored deep into injury time at the end of the first half when Manyisa saw a long range effort rebound off the crossbar, allowing Isaac Chansa to turn home the loose ball, but the Zambian midfielder was flagged offside.

Bucs kept up the pressure in the second half and almost broke the deadlock on 55 minutes when Ndwandwe parried a low effort from Dikgang Mabalane into the path of Thandani Ntshumayelo, but the midfielder put his effort off target.

On 73 minutes Ndwandwe came up with another excellent save, just about keeping out Tlou Segolela’s shot after Ethekwini had failed to clear their lines and allowed the Pirates winger a chance to get away an effort on goal from inside the penalty area.

10 minutes later McCarthy almost found a goal but his well-struck free kick flashed over the crossbar. By this stage Ethekwini were really struggling with players suffering from cramp and injuries as a result of the high tempo of the match.

Finally, on 86 minutes, Pirates found the back of the net. Defender Siyabonga Sangweni, who has become a real kingpin at set pieces since moving to the Buccaneers at the start of the season, headed home from a corner.

It was cruel on brave Ethekwini, but in truth they had offered little going forward and only a great defensive performance, especially from their goalkeeper, had kept them in the match up until conceding the late goal.

When this coach took over from Krol he promised us good football meaning when Pirates win they must win with a style kuphi khona? I wish Dr Khoza must bring back Ruud Krol and Farouk Khan as an assistant coach. We appreciate a win but......................

Ungreatful fans, leave the coach alone. How long did it take Krol to get silver wear? This guy has not even finished a year, he made a lot of signings that he still want to see show casing thier abilities..He can do whatever he wants as long as he is still winning.

We are taken for a ride here, this fong kong coach is definitely a Brazilian from China, fake .He cannot build from previous games, so STUPID.

Only early this week he was saying he cannot start with Bennie because he is not in the right shape to be on a starting lineup then he starts with him today but creates a very big space between the midfield and Bennie. I mean we all know that the combination between Rantie and Bennie has yielded results in the past, why change it, only Leal can't see that.

The only way to solve this selection problem is to institute a similar investigation that led to the suspension of Owen DG, maybe some players are paying to be on a starting lineup.

Something tells me Mbuyane came to this game with an injury but ya, he had to take the space of an injury free player.

The first substitution, shocking. Quite honest, all three players that were substituted were not worthy of a starting lineup.

It was not enough that he humiliated us in the ACL, he wants to do the same locally. Lets be honest, we may progress to the next stage but those minors won today and we lost. People will remember that creche from nowhere that gave us problems not our victory. Our rivals will forever remind us of our struggle which nearly ended like the Baroka saga.

Mr Chairman must please fire this idiot before we do it ourselve.

@Champ,
You are speaking out of envy for other teams, you wanted to boast about the score line which was not to be.
Manyisa our so called Inesta was given a role to be influencial and he didn't. We are calling ourselves Barcelona of South Africa, Barcelona is playing with midfielders. So there was nothing rong for playing them but they just showed they do not have the class we claim they have.

This coach just relies on a startin line up,we did not introduce new players like others but yet we play sum facked up futbal.i wud undstand if we hd given a run 4 our fringe players bt WTF is wrong wit this Brazilian thing.
This is n example that there was definetly a pronlem btwn players n coach, look hw many seniour players started even when most of them shud hv been benched.Leal ws just tryin 2 win those players over.

Asernal is also playing with one striker, with one Natural winger Walcot, thats what the coach did with Mabalane. These brainless midfielfers kept on kicking high balls instead of using thier ability of being ball players. Keep possesion and pass accurately.

Coaches always take blows for mediocre players, players who under perform and under utilise football brains.

U must undtsnd that Barca has a system they play not a startin lineup like us where players just go into field confused.Leal just has a startin 11 bt not a tactical team.
