Bidvest Wits beat Santos in the Telkom Knockout Cup

Posted: 27 November 2011 Time: 16:55

Ryan Chapman, with his seventh goal of the season, was at the heart of Santos’ exit from the Telkom Knockout after he created his side’s first goal and scored the second in BidVest Wits 3-0 semifinal win.

The People’s Team may have started the better of the two teams, but the opening ten minutes, where they excelled, was the best period of the match for them. And to be frankly honest the only chances Santos created on goal were long range shots.

In the fifth minute Tawonga Chimodzi let loose with a powerful low drive from 25-yards out, but Energy Murambadoro produced a good save to deny him.

Three minutes later and Graham King also tried his luck from long range, but he saw his effort sail high over the crossbar.

Following a disastrous ten minutes and some bollocking from Roger De Sa on the side lines, Wits quickly sprang into action and took control of the game with their slick passing and off the ball running.

In the 21st minute Sifiso Myeni almost gave the Students the lead when his 25-yard free-kick beat the defensive wall but struck the crossbar and bounced away from danger.

Two minutes later and an attack down the left saw a good low cross come into the Santos area. Asive Langwe did really well to get in front of his marker at the near post to meet the cross, but his effort went wide from six-yards out.

As expected, Santos sat back in defence and tried to hit on the counter-attack, and there was a rare chance in the game when Jonathan Armogam broke behind the Wits defence in the 28th minute. But he squandered the chance chipping over the goalkeeper and the crossbar in the one-on-one situation.

The second half, though, was all the home team and we only had to wait eight minutes after the restart before Wits took the lead.

After an initial goalmouth scramble inside the Santos area, Ryan Chapman was quickest to react as he powerfully pulled the ball across the face of goal from the right side of the six-yard box which was met by the left foot of Langwe from a couple yards out, 1-0.

Then in the 63rd minute, ten minutes after creating his side’s first goal, some sloppy defending from Santos allowed Chapman to score Wits second goal.

Chapman easily beat a defender inside the box, nut-megging Pere Ariweriayi, to leave himself with just the keeper to beat and the Students’ striker made no mistake burying the ball past Tshepo Motsoeneng from ten yards out, 2-0.

With Wits in firm control of the match after taking a two goal lead, they eased off and were content to go through the paces as Santos hardly threatened in attack.

Substitute Sifiso Vilakazi confirmed the victory for the Students with the games third goal, a well-placed 18-yard shot in the 93rd minute that found the top right-hand corner, 3-0.

Wits and Orlando Pirates will now meet in the final of the Telkom Knockout.

Good Final.I will still reiterate my views on how slow cup venues are dicided.B4 this costly stadiums were built for world cup the excuse was that soccer doesn't have stadiums but now this is different.Unless I'm unaware but the Final venue has not been announced?Any major tournament in big leagues & championships get that spectacle build encompassing the venue.Even if Psl is not sure abt the teams into the Final, they can still entice the supporters by selling tickets 1st batch of tickets early on discounts. Why wait until when 2 teams are left to decide venue of finals or why make a draw without venues & announce venues later. For me this is just pure lack of efficiency for a so called one of best leagues. If Psl want to sell their brand they must also remember the venue also brings the hype.

Ok let me start by saying this as Bucs fan:Pirate won against Arrows b'coz they are jst abetter team literally. No philosophy behind this If u drive a Tazz in a freeway and Im driving Range rover obviously I'll out race u,therefore pirate won against arrows b'coz its abetter team.

Now let me tell u something about Students (Wits) they loose badly on the 10 Dec, b'coz Pirate wants the trophie desparatelt not 2 prove a point Wits. whoever was going 2 play a final with the Pirate woul hv been in trouble. pirate don't want 2 avenge themselves against Wits they jst want de Cup. stop being Philosophical here distorted ppl.

@Simangaliso it is my wish to see Pirates loosing against Wits but unfortunately you can't say Wits will win because they beat Pirates before, Cup and league games are 2 different things, teams like Wits are characterised by 'choking' where it matters most just like Chiefs. Pirates have a never say die attitude were as i am not sure about Wits.

I know in the final it will be Pirates Vs PSL eleven, we saw it in the game against swallows every supporter for every team in the Psl was there supporting swallows. But i am not fazed by this behaviour becouse I know with success comes the haters. Even in your community not every1 will like you if you are doing good for urself. People will always call you names and that pushes anyone to be even more successful in life. Pirates have done it before already this season by beating the Zebras, let me tell you this we are going to do it again by beating this overrated Wits team. No team has ever been in a 8 consecutive finals(Mtn82010, Telkom2010, Telkom2011, Mtn82011, Nedbank2010, Carling Black label2011, Vodacom2011, ORT cup2011). And even next years Nedbank Cup you will again see Pirates in the final. Pirates is the biggest team in Southern Africa period.

Shame everyone is trying to point out how arrows deserves something outta lastnights game and all duly forgot that in football the team that take their chances well wins (as wits illustrated lastweek) even dashi was sad and why would one ask, even kickoff is sad, oh very sad cause their team just gets knockout these days and now they all can rally with wits. Yerrr it's gonna be a very ,very, very sweet victory in two weeks time. I really cant wait as i just loves it when our players go up the podium ,while they play our song, HIYO LE MABUCCANEENA. Just brilliant and it will be,forsure!

This monkey that calls himself stylish is must really be mentally disturb. How on earth can he say bafunny is in crisis and pirates are to blame, while everyone knows the likes of shabba, khune and renilwe are responsible and that fluke dans celebrations are there for everyone to see (just go on youtube). The moron further implies that we play skop and donner, is this thing foreal, sounds like he isn't even embarrassed as to how clueless he is regarding the beautiful game, what a waste of space of a thing.

how many fans does Wits have konje.

People lets not fool ourself here, Arrows lost to Pirates fans, they filled that Moses Mabhida stadium.

Now who is Wits in a cup final. Lets not confuse issues here, the nature of this game is different. Pirates is simply writing history while others talk.

WEll, Last year Pirates lost 3-1 to the Zebras in the PSL and then went on to lose 3-0 in the TKO final. I'm some how scared that the same might happen this year. From a soccer fan perspective not supporting a club, Wits has the upper hand. I was @ the stadia yestaday and wits are a team to beat. Segolela,Chansa and Klate should up their game until the last whistle and then the Ghosts will crowned TKO champs.
