Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows in the Telkom Knockout Cup semis

Posted: 26 November 2011 Time: 22:09

Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows 3-1 in the Telkom Knockout Cup semi-final played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

Abafana Bes’thende seemed on course to upset the Soweto giants when they surged ahead through Robyn Johannes, but goals from Siyabonga Sangweni, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Oupa Manyisa guided the Buccaneers into their second successive final in this competition and a fifth Cup Final within the last season and a half. Dillon Sheppard was sent off for Arrows in the second half for a second bookable offence.

After a cagey opening to the game, Pirates almost opened the scoring in the 21st minute. An innocuous-looking long ball from Siyabonga Sangweni saw Benni McCarthy out-jump Musa Bilankulu and power a header onto the crossbar, with goalkeeper Helton Da Rocha well beaten.

Bucs looked the likelier scorers in what was a tightly-contested game, but Arrows surged ahead just past the half hour mark when former Pirates player Robyn Johannes picked up a pass from Dillon Sheppard, burst through the visitors’ backline and beat Moeneeb Josephs with a low shot.

From a former Buccaneer getting on the score sheet, it was soon the turn of a former Arrows defender to level the scores: Siyabonga Sangweni redirected a shot from Rooi Mahamutsa beyond Da Rocha in the 40th minute to leave the game locked at 1-1 heading into the break.

With just under 20 minutes to play, Pirates went into the lead when good pressure from Daine Klate and a mix-up between Mzivukile Tom and Da Rocha allowed substitute Thulasizwe Mbuyane a straightforward chance to put Bucs ahead – he duly guided home a left-footed shot to make it 2-1.

Any hopes Arrows had of sending the game to extra time were snuffed out on 83 minutes when Oupa Manyisa added to Pirates’ advantage by converting a penalty. The spot kick was awarded after Dillon Sheppard fouled Lucky Lekgwathi in the 18-yard area and earned a dismissal for a second bookable offence.

Very well done by Pirates. We need to win it to set a record of 5 successive titles. As for SABC, Baba is the worst commentator ever only interested in self praise and gossip. He must leave.

Well done Bucs,it was a god win thou lot of improbements are neede,Jali is one of the kind, him and Manyisa were cut rom the same cloth,i think its about time they take that combination to the national level, the boy is just class period!!! Sangweni was sent from the above, its like he has been with Pirates for years..Mahamutsa is still erratic,i understand he still lacks game time, all in all it was a good game but Chansa is too selfish,i think he should make way for Juju in our next game..Tse Ntsho Happy people!!!!!

Congratulations to Orlando Pirates for the glory but let me ask this. Why did Pirates not score more goals after Sheppard was red carded? was it not the right time for them to practice target shooting bcos Arrows were one man down? I think Leal should talk to his players about this. they should have put Arrows under pressure and scored more two goals.

Champs, please note that Desh did not mean what he said.He was just trying to console the losing coach as a proffesional jounalist. After all Desh always sympathises with us as our former keeper.Unlike William Shongwe,(former zebra keeper)who behave like a card carrying zebra,Desh is pro.

Firstly i would like to extend my humble apologies to all the haters out there, that one was for ma gents, they promise and easily delivered on that and what wits did to us, we did to arrows. How things change and it was a team affort and deserved victory. Happy we are and happy we shall remain. Let the good times roll and rolling they are. Halala the happy people, halala the champs, we cruising to yet another trophy and there's nothing zebraflopsarrows can do, only watch and that pains, very very much so, shame.

Mr Editor, may you please do your comparison again and c who won, where was your Mbesuma? the only thing he excels in, is his non attractiveness, everyday he is becoming more uglier, Bucs beat former Chiefs Coach, Chiefs former player Mbesuma did nothing to help his former team, the zebra fans were hoping that Muhsin will win, Mbesuma will score, and ask Mr My Family business to ask them (Muhsin & Mbesuma) to rejoin Zebras AKA Bobby's family business

@Andrew:.I agree with you champ.Leal lakes tactics. We should have scored more goals after red card.Leal should have pulled either a defender or a mid for a striker to force Arrows to pull a striker for a defender.

I wasnt hapy about Leal at times. He took too long to substitute, even when the team was under servere pressure especialy Rantie. I is as if he wl be waiting to conside a goal first or wl be thinking of xtra time? What if that team(Arrows)scowed and prevented xtra time?
