Orlando Pirates beat Moroka Swallows in the Telkom Knockout Cup

Posted: 5 November 2011 Time: 22:25

Orlando Pirates beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 in a Telkom Knockout Cup quarter-final thanks to a brace from Benni McCarthy on Saturday night.

After scoring the game’s opening goal, Luvhengo Mungomeni made a horrible mistake in defence which allowed Pirates to steal the ball and consequently score the match’s winning goal.

Still, take nothing away from Man of the Match, Benni McCarthy, who scored a brace on the night, including one of the goals of the season, to take the Buccaneers to the semifinals of the Telkom KnockOout.

The first 45 minutes saw Pirates with more ball possession, but unable to really create any decent opportunities on goal. Instead, the better chances of the half fell to the Dube Birds despite them seeing very little of the ball.

Pirates first scare in defence came in the 11th minute when Siyabonga Nomvete slipped a beautifully through-ball for Lerato Chabangu to run onto and with only Moeneeb Josephs to beat. Luckily for Pirates, the striker’s first touch was a poor one and it allowed the keeper to smother him and steal the ball.

Pirates’ best chance of the half came six minutes later when Isaac Chansa drove into the box on a good run, but he saw his six-yard shot superbly saved by Greg Etafia.

In the 18th minute, however, Nomvete should really have given the home side the lead when he snuck in front of Josephs at the front post to meet a Joseph Makhanya right wing cross, but the striker headed wide from four yards out.

In the 38th minute Swallows had another great chance to score when Luvhengo Mungomeni squandered a great chance from ten yards out. After making his way into the box and with only the keeper to beat, the defender fired well wide under no pressure.

The second 45 saw Pirates start the half a little flustered and Swallows made them pay when it appeared Mungomeni made up for his first half miss with the Bird’s opening goal.

After Pirates failed to convincingly clear a corner-kick in the 66th minute, Nomvete latched onto the lose bal on the left side of the box and drove a low cross across the face of goal which Mungomeni side-footed home from a couple yards out, 1-0.

After going behind Pirates quickly fought back and equalized in the 73rdminute when McCarthy scored one of the goals of the season. The veteran striker drove a thunderbolt 35-yard free-kick into the top right-hand corner, giving the keeper no chance, 1-1.

Six minutes later and McCarthy become the hero for Pirates on the night when Mungomeni become the villain of the match for the Birds.

The Swallows defender tried to dribble out of defence and lost the ball after being tackled by Oupa Manyisa. The midfielder then played a square pass from the right to an unmarked McCarthy inside the 18-yard area and with only the keeper to beat the striker made no mistake slipping the ball past a stranded Etafia, 2-1.

Sadly that is how the match ended for Swallows as they failed to create any other chances on goal. For Pirates, they will sing McCarthy’s praises and probably Mungomeni’s as the Buccaneers moved into the semifinals of the Cup competition.

Indeed form is temporary and class is permanent!what a goal, you could see even when Benni went to that ball, that he had it in himself that he will score!I believe our coach should start with Rantie and Benni, then we shall be unstoppable!
Prophets of Doom are dead and buried.oh yeah,I saw a placard from one Buccaneer reads,WE ARE CRUISING ON A ZEBRA.we a picture of a zebra!

SWALLOWS INDEED CONTINUED WHERE THEY LEFT OFF LAST WEDNESDAY...THIS PIRATES TEAM IS HURTING MANY SOULS. SOMEONE ONCE SAID IN THIS FORUM THAT YOU WRITE-OFF PIRATES AT YOUR OWN PERIL. I TEND TO AGREE BECAUSE THIS TEAM NEVER GIVE UP FIGHTING. I'M AMAZED BY THE FIGHTING SPIRIT. MAYBE OPPOSITIONS MUST NOT CELEBRATE THEIR GOALS BEFORE THE END OF THE GAME AS YOU KNOW FOR SURE PIRATES WILL ALWAYS BOUNCE BACK AND SPOIL THE CELEBRATION. OPERATION TAKE ALL CONTINUES...HAPPY PEOPLE AGAIN AND AGAIN...

I don't c Chibuku FC progressing beyond the semis. Scoring thru a set piece and a gifted goal does not impress me. This is a lucky win if u ask me. Hard luck to Maswaiswai. The better team lost. Khosi 4 Life until Bennie McCanteen stops luking like a sumo wrestler.

@ chronic

No man we don't have to call him up for BB serious we really need to develop young ones I dot think BENNIE will still play by 2014 so it will be a waste of time!!!don't get me wrong the guy has proved over the years and now that he is a great striker I don't doubt his quality one bit, but to use him to qualify and struggle after ward it's not a good idea!!! He is struggling with fitness right now and I think it's not going to get better for him coz he is getting injured in the process!!! Congratulations to you!!!!

The Donkey fans celebrate as if they hav the cup already. These unlearned Rats don realise they r jus in the semis,so no need 2 celebrate yet. But I'm not suprised cos on Wednesday they celebrated a draw like they won the elections. Last weekend they celebrated a faked penalty win against Cosmos. Thats how Donkeys behave, what more can we demand from them?

Yah really...is it the same McCathy people were saying he's finished and that OPFC made a terrible mistake by signing him?

Secondly, which is something that irritates me...why is it that when it's OPFC scoring brilliant goals it has to be "what a mistake from so and so" by the stupid commentators who fail to give credit to the goal scorer rather they question the defender (tonight Bennie scored but instead of giving him credit he deserves the commentator mentioned that it's Greg Etafia's mistake for not manning the goal post properly). Contrary, when it's OPFC on the receiving end they give so much praise to the scorer (Mathebula's goal on Wednesday).

Is all this indication that they were expecting the results to be in their (as Zebras fans) favour?
