Moroka Swallows beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout Cup

Posted: 22 October 2011 Time: 21:59

Moroka Swallows beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 in the Telkom Knockout Cup at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday night.

The Swallows goals were scored by Lefa Tsutsulupa, Lerato Chabangu and Siyabonga Nomvete.

The win came on the back of three goalkeeper errors from Sundowns’ Calvin Marlin, recalled to the side for this match after having played just one competitive match in the past 12 months.

Sundowns had the first chance of the game as the excellent Greg Etafia saved at the feet of Katlego Mphela as the visitors began the match the brighter of the two sides.

The home team might have been ahead on 29 minutes, though, as Chabangu’s free-kick flashed across the Sundowns goal, with none of the three Swallows players on hand able to get a decisive touch to turn the ball into the back of the net.

The Birds were ahead on 37 minutes though as Tsutsulupa collected the ball on his chest, allowed it to drop and hit a powerful shot on the volley. It was straight at Marlin, but the keeper seemed slow to react and the ball squirmed under his body and into the net.

Elias Pelembe might have leveled for Down when he found himself one-on-one with Etafia, but the Nigerian saved. The keeper lost sight of the ball though and Pelembe stabbed the rebound goalwards, only to see his trickling effort cleared off the line.

Hlompho Kekana then wasted an excellent effort to draw Sundowns level when he fired wide from close range, and the visitors were made to pay after another calamitous goal.

The corner was floated to the back post, Marlin came for it but was beaten in the flight and Chabangu provided a neat finish that served as a reminder of his quality.

And it was 3-0 when substitute Oscar Machapa shot straight at Marlin, the goalkeeper spilled the ball and Nomvete was on hand to react quickest to the loose ball and net his fifth goal in four games.

The moment i saw Calvin "Mr Calamity" Marlin's name on the starting line-up i knew it that we've lost the game. There was no way that we were gonna over power Swallows with such a goalkeeper at the back.Be that as it may i must blame the whole Team for not wanting to score the goals today. The people i watched the game with told me that Swallows have used a strong Muti or whatever it is called.Judging by the number of inviting chances we've lost today,i think i must subscribe to that notion.Coach i'd like to challenge you to come out&apologise to us die hard Downs Fans for your first blunder of the season by playing Marlin¬ substituting Teko with Nyatama.

We are going to meet a very weak team in the final(Nedbank styl). Can zebra fans answer this question?Who is gona play right back 2moro?Will vivian take a suicidal risk fielding gay tau since they are in no talking terms?Your keeper also? When we were busy signing players you called us names hence your number1 enemy scored our 1st goal to progress to the 2nd round.Yes i say our 1st goal not our only goal you marons.

All the years i've been in this Country i didn't know that Swallows had Fans.Where are they fall from? From the tree?Or have they woken up from the grave? Our Coach made a mistake by not substituting Teko with Nyatama.Swallow weren't magnificent going forward, but when they did they just scored coz we had played without a goalie tonight.Hardy Sweyts i know u're hurting but it's gonna be fine.Leave me something on my inbox-benzito@webmail.co.za

Sorry Masandawana, just give Neeskeens more time, atleast 3 years to rebuild this team.Dutch coaches are reknown for slow success so brave yourself for this!
But 3 nil is disaster & I can now believe that Teko is a curse to a team as his teams never wins trophies but he, himself always wins personal glory!

Is Mwanjali better than Xulu?I don't see why Mwanjali should be a captain & also be played infront of natural central defenders.Brutal truth be told,Sundowns is not far from Chiefs in comparison.Very disappointing.

Joke of the CENTURY, DID @ any point in your life think that you were Far from Kaizer Chiefs? Truth be told in SA only 2 teams are worth watching : Ajax and SSU, and I would watch Swallows but not always. All the teams known as the BIG 3 SUCKS!!! ITS THAT THEY HAVE FANS WHO CAN TALK...now that a SCARY FACT!!!!

Our aim in tht game was to teach Sundowns players and their supporters to respect the Birds so that nextime when they come to play against us, they come with cautious, not 2 expect easy game. Unfortunately their lesson came with tears, they have been dumped out of the cup with 3-0 scoreline. I feel tht the Birds were little bit harsh in their lecture, at least 1-0 was gona be enough not 2 bury them alive. What I like the most is tht they were beaten with their best players or 100% squad, this is what was said during the week going 2 the game. The Birds were able to command the respect from Sundowns, objective achieved going 2 the future matches against them.

Yes, Swallows do have suppoters to answer your question. The reason you hardly notice us, it is because asiphaphi like Sundowns supporters, we always respect our opponents tht we play against everytime. Example, Sundowns beat us 4-0 in a league game but we are still above them in the Absa Premier League log. It shows tht Sundowns cannot beat us where it matters the most *Cup knock out* It shows tht Sundowns cannot rise to the occasion where it matters the most!

Why downs did not qaulify for the qaurter-final stage because they won 4/0 in the first round at Master Moripe stadium and swallows won by 3/0 at Dobsonville stadium so aggregate score 4/3 favoured s'donws or maybe z a new law made by safa that team that won by small score z one that z going threw to the qaurter-final stage?

I said it once and I will say it again today...as long as Sunflops still have the devil within their ranks they will never win any silverware...they must ask us...this chap is a bad omen for any team he plays for.

Eish maar ke sono ka Motsepe...such an expensively assembled squad...or should one start to say...uselessly assembled team...nothing to show? Their hope is Nedbank Cup and they will meet us again and that automatically rules them out...shame!

Poor motsepe!, so much investment and so little return. And the worst part they beaten by a team made up of living fossils. I think its better if motsepe went elsewhere wit his money cos clearly sunclowns have no idea how to use it since they buy anything that breathes oxygens (e.d franklin cale) instead of seeing who suits their football culture (if they still have one).

president mutsipe try to find us a new couch bcoz we ar alwys losing if not is a draw plz sir.
U r totally wrong sir. All those who always say the coach must go afta bad results r not Sundowns supporters by birth, rather they were forced by their uncles and oupas to follow Downs. Blame the players. How many chances created and missed. We had more than 10 corner kicks but players never made use of them. Teko is always shooting over the bar. Where's his experience. Mabhuti had a gr8 shot stoped by Etifia back to Mpela's feet what he did. Again Pelembe had double chance, he took a gr8 shot blocked by Etafia, Etafia didn't see that whereabouts of the ball again Pelembe had a gr8 chance to capitalise on that but he failed with distinction. Pls give the coach a break. Some of U were crying 4 Marlin I told them Marlin would never b better than Sandilands. Maybe our goalkeeper coach need to be changed. He turned our international keepers to the amateurs
