Niger 2 South Africa 1 in 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Posted: 4 September 2011 Time: 18:42

Bafana Bafana were beaten 2-1 by Niger in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier Niamey on Sunday.

Niger's goals came from Dankwa E Kofi and Moussa Maazou, before Andile Jali brought one back for Bafana.

The West Africans have jumped to the top of the standings on nine points, though South Africa and Sierra Leone (who beat Egypt 2-1 on Saturday) are still very much in the race to win the group with eight points apiece.

The hosts went 1-0 up in the opening minutes of the match, Kofi rising unmarked for a header from a corner.

Teko Modise had the best chances for South Africa in the first half, hitting the post twice; once early in the match and again, missing an open net, 10 minutes before half-time.

Bafana settled down after conceding early on, but looked to be struggling without the injured Katlego Mphela.

As half-time approached the wind picked up, cooling the heat somewhat, and Bafana looked more in control of the game.

Lehlohonolo Majoro was brought on for Thulani Serero at the beginning of the second half.

Bernard Parker blasted a shot over the bar just after the restart, after being set up by Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Then in the first few minutes of the second half Moussa Mazou scored from close range, after some poor defending by South Africa.

With 20 minutes to go Jali scored a fantastic goal to give South Africa a glimmer of hope, after some great teamwork in midfield.

But it was not enough, and the score remained 2-1, for Pitso Mosimane's first loss as coach of South Africa.

In the remaining Group G fixtures, Egypt play Niger at home and Bafana host Sierra Leone.

Niger are on nine points, Bafana and Sierra Leone on eight, and Egypt – who are out of the running – on two.

To finish top of the group Bafana must win their last match against Sierra Leone, and hope Niger either draw or lose against Egypt.

If we draw with Sierra Leone, and Egypt beat Niger, the top three teams will have nine points, and the placing will come down to goal difference.

As it stands Bafana have a goal difference of +2, Niger +1 and Sierra Leone 0.

The two best second-placed teams from all groups also qualify (apart from Group K, in which winner and runner-up qualify because of the late inclusion of Togo).

If South Africa lose to Sierra Leone, they will be eliminated from the competition.

I hope people will realise that J15 is on a league of his own. Boardroom judges who decided to give Serero all awards last season without winning a thing are eating a humble pie.

Pitso should have started with Majoro in the absence of KIller..Serero is a good player but not a goal scorer...Parker has been a midfielder of late he is not scoring...so technically there was no striker in that team...no depth as Shabba and Teko are back to that thing of not using wings....Pitso just had a wack team...as for making Shabba the captain I just do not get the idea, the boy is just like Pinnar..no captain material.

@ Sbuda duuu , If Niger Beat Egypt it will be almost impossible for Bafana to qualify, because there are only two spots left for second Best, and some second in some groups have 13 and 11 Points already and If Bafana win against Sierra Leone the best they will have is 11 Point.
Sudan Has 13 Points already and they are second in their Group.

Disappointing. Teko Modise has shown countless times that he is useless in from goals. He did it at the world cup and has continued to show his lack of goalscoring ability. Parker is still in a rut and cannot get right.

I'm mostly disappointed by Bafana defenders. If you cannot defend against Niger, how are you going to defend again Ivory Coast, Ghana and top european and south american teams.

Bafana now has to rely on others to qualify for AFCON. rubbish, absolute rubbish

I won't comment on the black out issue because it's not unusual of SABC...it's a usual phenomenon.

On the game and thr outcome. I knew when one player was included that more bad luck is coming SA/BB's way again. Eish this player is bad news and a bad omen for the team and the sooner Pitso realizes that the better. OPFC was doomed in his presence but what happened soon after his move out of Mayfair? Sauccess, success and success.

If Pitso went for a win ,he shud have got something from this match as always we aim low, we got nothing jst lyk in Cairo we shud hav got more than a point if we went for a win.Bafana Bafana lack confidence whats wrong with talking win win win.Now we might not qualify cos we scared to talk about winning and walk the talk.We nid to change our mentality tis modesty is sending us no where we hav better quality of players we shud hav got sumthing from this match.

Y paka was played 4 the whole 90minutes...ndulula should have done beta...the clueless coach say he dont want paka 2 sccore since he is satisfied with him as a provider. the question is y pitso didnt play with a strker n xpect 2 win? majoro should have played the whole 90 min...atleast a goal was guaranteed...

manyisa is the most onform midfilder in the psl yet he is not played at the expence of a has been teko. the less i mention shaba the better...other bucs family will definitely do that...

away with xperience guys who hve nothing 2 show 4 their experience...its time we play with guys under the age of 26...jali proved that the is no such thing as xperience...hardwork pays

OUR NATIONAL TEAM HAS FAILED US...PIRATES SHOULD PLAY THE LAST QUALIFYING MATCH...THEIR SETUP CONSIST OF ONLY S AFRICANS...THEY ALSO ADAPT UNDER PRESSURE
