Orlando Pirates beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 in MTN8 first leg semi-final

Posted: 21 August 2011 Time: 16:55

A penalty in injury-time handed Orlando Pirates a 3-2 home win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final, first leg.

Thulasizwe Mbuyane opened the scoring for Bucs in the 6th minute, but Katlego Mphela equalised with a penalty just 10 minutes later.

Musa Nyatama put Sundowns ahead on 19 minutes.

In the second half, Tlou Segolela had a goal disallowed for a dubious off-side decision, before equalising on 79 minutes.

Finally, Segolela was fouled by Surprise Moriri in the box in injury time, and Bongani Ndulula made no mistake with the resultant penalty.

Both teams came out all guns blazing from the first whistle.

The first goal was superbly set up by Benni McCarthy, who played a delicate defence splitting pass through to Mbuyane inside the box. 'Juju' divided two defenders with a touch before slipping the ball past Wayne Sandilands.

Sundowns hit back quickly, as after a great passing movement Lebohang Mokoena was pulled down mid-skill inside the box by Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi.

Mphela stepped up to the spot, but his shot was brilliantly saved by Moeneeb Josephs, diving high to his right. The ball was palmed back into Mphela's path, and he controlled before slotting it home.

Just four minutes later the Brazilians took the lead after a great counter-attack.

Elias Pelembe slipped down the left flank and sent in a point-perfect pass to Musa Nyatama, who finished off the move with a textbook volley to make it 2-1.

Pirates came within centimetres of equalising, when Ramahlwe Mphahlele tried to clear the ball on the edge of his own box, but saw his clearance rebound of Daine Klate and head towards goal.

Sandilands was out of position, and could only watch as the ball hit the crossbar.

In the second half the Brazilians seemed happy to sit back, while Pirates pushed forward in numbers.

Bucs' relentless pressure paid off when Segolela found the back of the net with a strong shot from just inside the 18-yard area that rattled the underside of the crossbar before going in.

In the second minute of added time Segolela was in the thick of the action again, winning Bucs a penalty after being brought down clumsily by Moriri.

Ndulula coolly stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way.

I will always, just as I did in the past, protect my players, our captain included. Those who are criticizing our captain are really not fair because every player has ons and offs, ups and downs. Lucky has been an inspiration throughout last season and even in the beginning two or three games this season. I think we are been hard on the man.

What a game! Pirates vs Sundowns is always entertaining. This game reminded me of the Durban Spectacle in 2000 when these two teams played in a 3 all draw.

Good results, good game but Lucky must pave a way for Mahamutsa.as for Mayambela, why the coach still use him I don't know.wasteful as ever!useless player!
Refereeing in this country is still far below the standard of international level.Tlou scored a great goal & it was deemed off-side,why I can't understand.

I'm a die hard Chiefs fan, but I told Sunflower fans that they won't beat Amabhakajuju at University of Orlando. No one win there. Akuyi lutho olubuyayo. I'm worried we play in CTN its gonna be tough. Vlad V must open his eyes nd be smart. Congrats Bhakaniya we will sleep in peace here in Tshwane. Less yada more quiet night.

As a Downs fan I take the positives 4rm this matchM we managed 2 score 2 goals away. I can't imagine us failing to score a goal in Loftus. If we score first Pirates will be in all sorts of trouble. It is not over yet.

BENNY, WHAT AGEM. FINALLY PIRATES HAS FOUND THEIR MISING PUZZLE. HE IS NOT 100% FIT, BUT HE WAS A HANDFUL 2 THAT YOUNG DEFENCE. HE IS MILES BETA THAN 100% FIT PAKA. JUST WATCH AT THE WAY HE PASSES THE BALL, PROTECT THE BALL, MARSHAL THE DIFENCE, HIS PRESENCE IN THE 18 AREA.

A FIT BENNY CAN SCORE 3 GOALS PER GAME. COME THE SECOND LEG, BENNYS HATRICK IS ALREADY COUNTED. KEEP IT UP BRO, U STILL HAVE WAT IT TAKES.

EVEN A BLIND ZEBRA CAN SEE

ATTACK LIKE ARTIST, DEFEND LIKE WARRIORS(rise, rise does not come close 2 this).
