AmaKhosi beat off a determined Wits side in quarterfinals

Kaizer Chiefs have advanced to the semifinals of the MTN8 with a hard-fought and entertaining 2-1 victory over Bidvest Wits at Soccer City on Sunday afternoon.

Wits took the lead through Sibusiso Gumede after 11 minutes, but Chiefs hit back with a penalty and debut goal for Bernard Parker, and a Mandla Masango header four minutes before halftime.

Wits had plenty of opportunities to get back into a game they dominated for large patches, but Chiefs held out for the win.

Gumede gave his side the lead after rising highest from a corner to head home past a helpless Itumeleng Khune in the Chiefs goal.

But the lead lasted just seven minutes as Gumede turned from hero to villain, fouling Masango in the penalty-area. Parker held his nerve to step up and open his Chiefs account after a move from Dutch side FC Twente.

And the home side were ahead on 41 minutes when Wits goalkeeper Emile Baron rushed off his line to try and intercept a through-ball for Masango, but the winger chipped the ball into the air over the keeper’s head, and then headed home as the Clever Boys defence stood static.

Jayiya crossed when he might have shot having worked space inside the six-yard box, while Sifiso Myeni was a constant thorn in the side of Chiefs down the left.

Tshabalala worked the fingertips of Baron with a stunning drive from 30-yards, but there were no more goals in the match to enthuse over and it is Chiefs who go into the semifinal draw along with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town.

PS: if my memory serves me well Stretch Marks FC went on to play extra tym against Nathi Lions a few months bck & won dt game via a dubious penalty. Makes mw wonder which team is stronger btwn Nathi Lions & Santos...

I wonder what we will do without Khune and Shabba, they were the difference today,as usual.Masango finally came into his own as well. Sweswe was brilliant but we need to partner him with someone else if we are to bid for the leaque.Isaacs is neither quick nor strong enough, despite his brilliant tackling. There's concern in the middle as well,Nengomasha is his old solid self, but he needs a better partner than Yende, maybe they should try Baloyi there.Keep Motaung on the bench for like six months. We lack creativity in the middle, hence the strikers are struggling. This VV must try something new, we can't keep repeating the same old fielding mistakes.

That defence will cost us big time, the back four plays like school boys. I don't see us challenging the league with that swak defence. Bobby nearly collapsed...lol.

It better to play 120 minutes against Santos than against Nathi Lions and luz to Baroka and think u can stop Bucs in semi-fianal, the tribble champions and only tim in Southern Africa to win Champions League??? We'll c the draw is coming 2morrow.

chiefs looked looked out of sorts 2day & the most annoying thing is seeing Bobby expecting alot from this bunch of playerz we have...newsflash my friend miracles happened & stoped in the era of Moses & others.here is what u need 2 do complete what u started, yes u made few good signings but they simply not enough otherwise we faced with a very long season ahead of us.fact we need depth in our squard,we need a left back becoz that boy real needs time & we don't have that on the other hand Jambo is quite a kak playa,Masango may have been positive but he's another useless player,we also need a center back Domza is way 2 weak 2 command the back.when last did we look dangerous on the right wing except when Tau climbs up?I bet since u can not even remember,Tinashe age is catching up with him thats why that Qatar club didn't sign him saw that his days are numbered. In all we need 2 back players,2 mid players right winger and an anchor and Ewin Issacs.stop hoping u turning this team 2 another PSL wannabies becoz this what u doing as things stand.

With Dominic Isaac realy we a goin to b punished this season,he lacks timin, commit fouls in dangerous positions.Sheriff can b a gud anchorman. he is cool on the ball,Oh Sweswe I am startin to luv this guy, strng tackles, timely interceptions.

Sumtyms I feel club owners are very unfair on coaches. There is no doubt that Chiefs management expect VV to deliver the lig title and other trophies with the kind of players @ his disposal. Really with a defence manned by a player like Isaacs 9hiefs wud have over achieved if they make it to the Top4. We can only win the lig by sheer miracles. We just don't have quality players to compete for lig. Honours.

i am sure all the team in the semis are wishing to play Chiefs, this team is the weakest Chiefs team ever.

Ritchi is a cow, Shabba is still learning and Khune is overrated.

Yende does n't deserve that number 10 jersey, Majoro is stil learning, Parker, now i see why overseas teams where not interested.

Jimmy Tau will never stop talking about Miyeni, Tau is the weakest rightback in the country.

overrall. Chiefs must thank the referee not Luck

midfield-midfield-midfield !!! Oh ! Nengomasha is playing the old school number 6... VV pls tel this guy, playing midfield doesn't mean he just play inside the circle but help in attack & defense also plssss?
overall we played crab ! but hope we'll wake up & smell the coffee. Pls 'YEYE' recover & VV pls give Josta & Nale a chance ?

Ow my God, now they accept that, they need quality players.

Reality check guys: quality players come at a price and your team does wanna fork out money, so u will continue to suffer.

Sfiso Miyeni the best rightback/leftback in the country declared his interest to join Chiefs but what did Bobby do.

request Zothwane from Sundowns and bring back Michael Nkambule.

Get rid of that back 4.
