Orlando Pirates beat Santos in MTN8

Posted: 6 August 2011 Time: 22:48

Orlando Pirates beat Santos 1-0 in an MTN8 quarterfinal match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

New signing Siyabonga Sangweni marked his official debut with a goal in the 105th minute, helping the Buccaneers join Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns in the last four of the competition.

Hardly any chances were created in the first half of the regulation 90 minutes, though Pirates’ Bongani Ndulula and Santos’ Vuyisile Wana both had opportunities they could possibly have made more of.

The Soweto side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but the visitors from Cape Town were more than happy to sit back and use the pace of their forwards on the counter attack.

Santos youngster Gregory Roelf forced a good save from Josephs on the hour mark with a difficult free kick that needed just a slight tough to deflect it beyond the keeper’s reach.

Pirates substitute Mark Mayambela added a new dimension to the home side’s attack and he almost broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, flicking impishly on target from a corner kick but Thabiso Ntloana was on hand to clear off his goal line.

The midfielder had perhaps the best chance of the game early on in the first half of extra time, but he toe-poked a shot wide of the near post after showing great pace and strength to get away from the attentions of Zairon van Beulen.

Penalties seemed inevitable but Pirates, to their credit, pushed hard to decide the game before spot kicks were called for and they were rewarded on the stroke of half time in the extra 30 minutes.

Defender Siyabonga Sangweni found himself with a sight of the target from a tight angle and got away a low shot that squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng before rolling over the goal line.

The last MTN8 quarterfinal on Sunday sees Kaizer Chiefs host Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium.

wow Chiefs Zebraz fans making noise as usual. My answer to them is, Pirates is the semis of MTN8 with a new coach who played against the toughest oppositon in the PSL, let alone SANTOS being our Hoodoo team.

To Pirates family, Guys i am dissapointed on all of you for putting so much pressure to the team and Leal, while they tried everything to win the game.

Lets criticise our team constructively, some of you are complaining but not suggesting possible solutions.

Its a fact that Leal, is still trying to find a team and its possitive that while doing so, he brings results. Pirates has so much quality and any coach would struggle picking his first eleven.

This is only the beginning of the season but some 'fans' are already complaining. Negativity is going to get us nowhere. Well done Pirate for winning a difficult game - Santos is always a hard nut to crack. Going to extra time so early in the season isn't that easy especially for Santos at altitude. Well done to Pirates and lets hope for an exciting series of semis.

his name is not Oupa Manyisa, His new name is Bra Oupa Manyisa, what a sensational. great game as usual.

Isaac Chansa is the missing link.

Champion: Chief i luv this team so much, i dont mind the usual negative comments from THE ZEBRAS or Bafan Ba stlayela because they scared of us. Chiefs has already lost twice to Bucs and cannot afford to play us in the semis if they win against Wits.

Sundowns cannot also afford to play Pirates at this stage

BUCS FAMILY lets always look on the positive and encourage this big team to grow from strenght to strenght.

THE NEW OPERATION IS: PIRATES U X onga Solveki, even big artist build the career around the success of this SUPERBRAND WITH A GALAXI OF STARS.

I don't care how Pirates won, as long as we won last night's game. People are saying Pirates were lucky to win the game last night but what they don't know is that luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

Up The Bucs...

One thing u maybe dont know is that Sundowns and Pirates fans have a healthy realtionship in this forum hence Sundowns brainy fans will never support your sick notions coming from a half ill brain.

Just get this into your head and u will be a decent human being or else maybe u a Zebra pretending to be a Dawana.

If Erwin Issacs was playing pirates would have been out. I maintain Mark Manyambela is gonna be the death of Pirates. He is better as a substitute.
