Orlando Pirates beat Santos in MTN8

Posted: 6 August 2011 Time: 22:48

Orlando Pirates beat Santos 1-0 in an MTN8 quarterfinal match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

New signing Siyabonga Sangweni marked his official debut with a goal in the 105th minute, helping the Buccaneers join Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns in the last four of the competition.

Hardly any chances were created in the first half of the regulation 90 minutes, though Pirates’ Bongani Ndulula and Santos’ Vuyisile Wana both had opportunities they could possibly have made more of.

The Soweto side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but the visitors from Cape Town were more than happy to sit back and use the pace of their forwards on the counter attack.

Santos youngster Gregory Roelf forced a good save from Josephs on the hour mark with a difficult free kick that needed just a slight tough to deflect it beyond the keeper’s reach.

Pirates substitute Mark Mayambela added a new dimension to the home side’s attack and he almost broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, flicking impishly on target from a corner kick but Thabiso Ntloana was on hand to clear off his goal line.

The midfielder had perhaps the best chance of the game early on in the first half of extra time, but he toe-poked a shot wide of the near post after showing great pace and strength to get away from the attentions of Zairon van Beulen.

Penalties seemed inevitable but Pirates, to their credit, pushed hard to decide the game before spot kicks were called for and they were rewarded on the stroke of half time in the extra 30 minutes.

Defender Siyabonga Sangweni found himself with a sight of the target from a tight angle and got away a low shot that squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng before rolling over the goal line.

The last MTN8 quarterfinal on Sunday sees Kaizer Chiefs host Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium.

@mzo i support ur assessment 100 percent. @ bra we r all pirates fans here, wen evaluating a team u dont say i am pirates there4 evryting they do is gud u critise in areas they lack dept. SABC is useless wen cumin to drafting a formation for pirates coz we were nt playing 4-4-2 we were playin a 4-2-3-1 so stop with ur mangamanga buznis. A defender 4 a defender that was poor.

Judging by the way Chibuku played last nite i don't c dem winning anything this czn. Rememba Santos were the bottom team in tje Top 8 yet Chibuku cudn't score a proper goal for 120 mins.they r not gonna be gifted goals in the semi's. If you take out Jali and Ouma Manyisa that team will be as flat as a leftover Chibuku beer.already the chorus about fake Drogba Ndulula has died down. Is there any stupid Chibuku fan who still thinks this team will compete in Africa ?

C'mon Makhosi let's show these Chibuku ppl how 2 win without relying on gifts from keepers.

Well done boys. I'm very proud of you. This was our coach's first official game against our hoodoo team. There is a lot that we need to improve on but we have the time to do so while winning our tough games.

We really did not have a proper pre-season workout especially against the PSL teams. We kept playing the same weak team and that did not help us get to where the coach wants us to be. We don't create as much goal scoring chances as i would us to. Hope the coach will work on that as well.

Congratulations to Sundowns as well. It was also their first official game under the new coach but they showed some good signs that they will be a very strong team going forward.

Pirates did well to keep most of the possession. The problem is that they are not patient enough. When you play a possession game, you need to be patient, especially if they just pass it around the final third of the field where the opposition defenders are likely to get frustrated and thus open gaps to slot in perfect through balls. As for Ndulula, I think the boy should be rested for 2-3 weeks. It is not good for a player to play without any rest. We also saw the likes of Gerrard and Lampard and Rooney under performing in the WC because of lack of rest. Ndulula has played since last, through pre-season with Amaglug-glug and pirates getting no rest. Tlou needs to be a team player. I saw how the team was passing the ball around but when the ball got to Tlou he just ran at the defenders. He has the ability but now he needs the intellect to know that when you do that everytime you get the ball, you become predictable. Creating and scoring is the only area of concern. The coach should work at it more

Jah neh this hoodoo team kak. Does it mean Pirates are a hoodoo team of all those teams they win against ? Fact is you were gifted a goal and be thankful but don't think other keepers will be that generous. Can't wait 4 de draw 2moro. Sky is de limit.
