Orlando Pirates beat Santos in MTN8

Posted: 6 August 2011 Time: 22:48

Orlando Pirates beat Santos 1-0 in an MTN8 quarterfinal match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

New signing Siyabonga Sangweni marked his official debut with a goal in the 105th minute, helping the Buccaneers join Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns in the last four of the competition.

Hardly any chances were created in the first half of the regulation 90 minutes, though Pirates’ Bongani Ndulula and Santos’ Vuyisile Wana both had opportunities they could possibly have made more of.

The Soweto side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but the visitors from Cape Town were more than happy to sit back and use the pace of their forwards on the counter attack.

Santos youngster Gregory Roelf forced a good save from Josephs on the hour mark with a difficult free kick that needed just a slight tough to deflect it beyond the keeper’s reach.

Pirates substitute Mark Mayambela added a new dimension to the home side’s attack and he almost broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, flicking impishly on target from a corner kick but Thabiso Ntloana was on hand to clear off his goal line.

The midfielder had perhaps the best chance of the game early on in the first half of extra time, but he toe-poked a shot wide of the near post after showing great pace and strength to get away from the attentions of Zairon van Beulen.

Penalties seemed inevitable but Pirates, to their credit, pushed hard to decide the game before spot kicks were called for and they were rewarded on the stroke of half time in the extra 30 minutes.

Defender Siyabonga Sangweni found himself with a sight of the target from a tight angle and got away a low shot that squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng before rolling over the goal line.

The last MTN8 quarterfinal on Sunday sees Kaizer Chiefs host Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium.

Is good that the top 4 will be in Semi finals even if the were playing like their under 15, this cup will be interesting until the final. Next round we shoud not be given AJAx and are the only teams that can more goals we need either Orphans or Tuckshop we need more goals in all the matches. Another version of Krol is in the house.

i'm not convinced, our coach will cost us. Its the dying munites. You take out a defender and replace him with another defender. It didn't make any sense, waste of substituation. We have good defenders, the best mid-field and good strikers but these departments are not linking especialy upfront. We played the full first half with out creating even a single good scoring chance. Leal told our players to keep the ball but he forgot to tell them to keep it going forward. Ndulula was busy in the wings coz no one is giving him the ball. Benni will fail aswell under this system. We playing too deep in our own half. Not convinced at all but a win is a win. Mbuyane played well in the last 10min and extra time. For 80min he was no where. Why did we sign bester? I just hope we don't cry for krol even before we reach december. Atleast Krol was defensive when he has scored a goal. We created scoring opportunities but he defended single goals. This leal guy. I don't know. Atleast only ajax is a strong team in the semi's.

@ tebotouch, dont disappoint me Bucaneer! Ndulula is a good striker but not a finished product, look at his movement off the ball its non existant! He is a great finisher but has his limitation which he needs to work on yes his positioning is great but its hard to find him coz he doesn't make hiself available.. Now look at Mbuyane's turns infront of that box, his running off the ball compare the 2 and u will know why the coach pulled out Ndulula, to change the game plan. U dnt sustitute players only coz they are having a bad game but to change the game. 10 out of 10 for Leal

Cup games are different and thats why one team hasn't won anything for 3 seasons now. To all those so called Bucs supporters who think the team didn't play well or didn't deserve to win they must go join Hollard Zebra we don't need u @ Bucselona. Team won and yet u are still complaining, what do u want? Ay u are not Pirates material go find a team to support.

@ mzo
did u really watch the game? Are u aware that mjempu had a yellow card? Before being substituted how many times did he move forward? After lekgwathi was moved to the leftback how many times did u see him in the opposition box? U don't even know what system pirates is playing hence ur lack of understanding subs.
