Mamelodi Sundowns go top of table with win over Santos

Posted: 29 April 2012 Time: 16:48

Mamelodi Sundowns have toppled Orlando Pirates from the top of the log after a 3-1 win over Santos on Sunday.

An own-goal from Pere Ariweriyai and one each from Nyasha Mushekwi and Lebohang Mokoena handed Sundowns the points, while Eleazar Rodgers kept his name in the top-scorer's race with a consolation goal for Santos.

Sundowns controlled the match from the first whistle, but battle to create any scoring opportunities, losing possession in the final third with some careless passing.

In fact, their first goal came from a Santos player, when a hapless Ariweriyai headed powerfully into his own net after a speedy cross by Elias Pelembe.

Sundowns continued to struggle to make their dominance count as the game dulled down. Finally, seven minutes from half-time, Lebohang Mokoena sent a pinpoint cross through, picking out an unmarked Nyasha Mushekwi, who made no mistake with a clinical header from six yards – his ninth League goal of the season.

Santos tried to fight their way back into the match in the second half, but Sundowns kept hold of the ball. Some sloppy defending in the 63rd minute gifted Hlompho Kekana a shot, and he fired a low drive into the bottom right-hand corner to make it 3-0.

The Brazilians sat back after going three up, and Rodgers got one back, with a fine finish from 10 metres out – his 11th of the season.

But it was far too little too late, and Santos remain second from bottom, while Sundowns go top on goal-difference.

@ all sunflops, pls prepare urself for the obvious, in the histry of psl there was never a foreign coach who won a league on his first season, Rudd Krol knows that, in his first season he lost league on goal diff, not saying sunflops will loose the league with goal diff but One point, in short there is was Johann can win league on his fisrt season, it will be an insult to south african football, and more embarrasing for chiefs who had a coach for close to 3 seasons but still failing to be on top 8, sorry sunflops it's the truth, it's between bucs and supersport.

So u gonna win the lig ? Why did u not win against Wits then ? @ home nogal ? U have already played Sundowns so how will u win the lig ? Suppose u win all ur remaining games n Sundowns win all theirs how will u then win the lig ?

OK, now i c. You know dat Sundowns will lose some of their remaining matches. But if so how sure r u dat u will win yours ? Sorry for asking u this sort of questiom becos most of u are uneducated fools. Already u r banking on Chiefs to beat Sundowns yet u always say Chiefs are average nut today they r gud enuff to beat Sundowns. Voetsek dimpya ke lona.

Some Bucs fans instead of congratulating Sundowns if they will the league will instead be having a go @ Chiefs or telling us about a treble.

@Sam......Walter Maponyane is unrelated to Go man Go and was actually recruited under the default name of Choppa Mboweni.
He came out and admitted to have committed the offence and was duly fined by the PSL, and later cleared to play under his correct name ka-Maponyane.

I still refer to him as Chopper though, cause he choppered anyway.......like we're chopping iy'nhliziyo zey'DDD zika-baba. mh.

@tzozo fooooool! We all know that there is no way chips fools will beat sunflops, even if you wanted to since you acting like you want to loose, Sunflops also knows that it's not like you will be donating points to them, you will loose all ur remaining games, with the way chips playing there is no team that can loose to you, so NO we are not counting on chiefs, but we know for a fact that sunflops will choke while bucs conqur where it matter most, so don't act like you are doing us a favour, fact is chips will loose all their games, not draw but loose, and end up out of top 8, and while there Pirates is the only team is PSL to have not finshed out of top 8, the ONLY team.

ShonginShiluva........That's one team with the best muti for Downs my outie.

Be it a dubious reffing decision, or an undeserved goal against the run of play, if not sheer badluck from our side, always seem to be favour Chiefs.
But of all the years that we were winning back-to'back titles, we were beating them in the league with conviction.

Yes they are down and out, but the 13th man will always be a threat......looking forward to it like isdididi looking forward to uk'shayi ndlamu. LOL.

@Bakashushu.........even if ishushu, but the more glaring fact is that Orlando Pirates have never defended the marathon........the always win it when Chiefs and Sundowns are not having the best of seasons.

Besides......let's all wish Dawana the best in order to ensure proper S. African representation in next year's edition ye-Champs League.
