Mamelodi Sundowns go top of table with win over Santos

Posted: 29 April 2012 Time: 16:48

Mamelodi Sundowns have toppled Orlando Pirates from the top of the log after a 3-1 win over Santos on Sunday.

An own-goal from Pere Ariweriyai and one each from Nyasha Mushekwi and Lebohang Mokoena handed Sundowns the points, while Eleazar Rodgers kept his name in the top-scorer's race with a consolation goal for Santos.

Sundowns controlled the match from the first whistle, but battle to create any scoring opportunities, losing possession in the final third with some careless passing.

In fact, their first goal came from a Santos player, when a hapless Ariweriyai headed powerfully into his own net after a speedy cross by Elias Pelembe.

Sundowns continued to struggle to make their dominance count as the game dulled down. Finally, seven minutes from half-time, Lebohang Mokoena sent a pinpoint cross through, picking out an unmarked Nyasha Mushekwi, who made no mistake with a clinical header from six yards – his ninth League goal of the season.

Santos tried to fight their way back into the match in the second half, but Sundowns kept hold of the ball. Some sloppy defending in the 63rd minute gifted Hlompho Kekana a shot, and he fired a low drive into the bottom right-hand corner to make it 3-0.

The Brazilians sat back after going three up, and Rodgers got one back, with a fine finish from 10 metres out – his 11th of the season.

But it was far too little too late, and Santos remain second from bottom, while Sundowns go top on goal-difference.

My prediction 4 tuesday en wednesday. Sione fc will win against 2nd star fc and Sonono will beat family business en dat will rule 2nd star fc virtualy out due 2 goal difference cos they'll be hoping 4 Downs 2 loose both games but it won't work 4 them cos Sione has beta goal difference against 2nd star fc. Bad for this carling chibuku drunkards. U shud have photocopied the table on friday.

This tym no favours for 2nd Star FC. Last seazon we helped them win the league and we lived to regret it. No more. This lig must go to either Clowns or Sion FC.

Again we are putting Zebras in an awkward position of wishing to see their own team lose.Let them lose again, title will be decided by the top 3 by playing each other.

I like this whenever any other team is beaten by Sundowns or Chiefs the supporters of both teams celebrate as if they have beaten Pirates.Hello!!! Sundowns played Santos not Pirates. Congratulations for winning the league anyway.

I am neither bothered nor discouraged by the results. OPFC will clinch this league doing it in honor of our down and out fellow Sowetans.

I have faith in the boys. Those who leave under the illusion that we are expecting favours from others will be made to eat humble pies. We'll do it ourselves and our own way.

Really I wish I can get a clue of Rats fans I.Q's: they know nothing bout the league, P.S.L is our middle name, nah I'm wrong it's our abbreviation, since Supersports has put their name three times:Let's include their location:The Championship is heading to Sundowns in Pretoria.....Downs will wrap the league against Supersports , we will collect since winning to them is a shock a surprise but to us is what we deserve: to Rats the orange shirt is gone, ask u Oupa Manyisa....Pressure had a positive on our boys especially their potential and quality that Downs has: Mr. Coach, big up, the line up was sumkinda unpredictable...
