Santos beat Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 22 April 2012 Time: 16:49

New Santos coach Maart Nooij recorded an impressive win on debut, leading The People's Team to a 2-1 victory against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.

By the same token, it was a third successive loss for Chiefs caretaker coaches Doctor Khumalo and Donald Khuse, who were appointed following the sacking of Vladimir Vermezovic.

The first half saw Santos pinned back in their own half for the most part, unable to get any rhythm going in their play, ensuring Chiefs keeper Ithumeleng Khune was a virtual spectator.

The chances that did come fell to Chiefs, but they were not able to make proper use of their opportunities.

Siphiwe Tshabalala was doing his best to make things happen, getting in a couple of decent crosses and linking nicely with his team-mates around the box.

Lehlohonolo Majoro also had a few chances on goal, but he shot over the bar in the 11th minute and then shot weakly in the 39th minute after Lucky Baloyi had seen his shot strike the defender.

The second half was off to an action packed start as Santos went in front immediately after the break, thanks to a Salmaan King header from Thabiso Ntloana’s cross.

In the 47th minute it was 2-0 to the home side as Eleazar Rodgers showed good composure to pick out the far corner of the net after a superb through ball from Tyren Arendse.

For the remainder of the half the Cape side very much found themselves on the back foot as they faced one Chiefs attack after another.

With 20 minutes to go Chiefs were right back in the game when George Lebese nipped in to score after a mix-up between Nasief Morris and Wayne Arendse.

The pressure continued to come from AmaKhosi in the final stages of the match, but the home side managed to repel everything that came at them.
