Pirates leave it late against Cosmos

Posted: 7 November 2007 Time: 23:03

Lucky Lekgwathi’s late winner handed Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win over Jomo Cosmos in their Absa Premier League clash at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Buccaneers dominated for most of the match, but to break down the solid Ezenkosi defence.

Bennett Chenene should have handed the visitors a sixth minute lead when he found himself in space inside the area, but the winger’s shot was blocked by Cosmos keeper Avril Phali.

Chenene threatened again in the 29th minute with a long range shot, but again Phali thwarted the diminutive 23-year-old.

The Ezenkosi’s first real threat on the Pirates goal arrived in the 36th minute via the boot of the Sam Magalefa, but visiting keeper Senzo Meyiwa made a comfortable save from the midfielder’s free-kick.

Excellent Walaza almost broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when he hit the post with a fierce shot from inside the area after receiving a good pass from Chenene.

The match remained goalless at the break.

Pirates continued their dominance in the second half, but dealt a major blow when Chenene was rushed to hospital following a clash of heads with a Cosmos defender.

Cosmos almost went ahead in the 74th minute through a shot by Anthony Laffor, but Lekgwathi cleared the ball off the line.

Lekgwathi then further enhanced his stature with the Buccaneers’ faithful when he scored from inside the area after running onto a pass by substitute Jorry Merahe.

Cosmos were then dealt a blow while Pirates were still celebrating, when midfielder Innocent Ntsume was asked to leave the bench following his comments made to the assistant referee.

congratulations ODG.
My concern is the inexperienced Senzo Mayiwa, he tends to rush things, even when its unnecessary. He must calm down after being pressured. His distribution needs to improve and not just kick the ball after a great save. Please Senzo stay on your line or will be seeing more goals like Nyandoro's on Sunday. Paulus Masehe doesn't deserve to be on the starting eleven, maybe a substitute. Teko and Bennet need not to play for 90 minute.

The game was well entertaining but on the Pirates side i(Pirates supporter) still insist that the strikers are not doing enough to pocket some goals or display moment of brilliance by taking shorts at range. I believe this will make defenders or keeper to commit some mistakes and take it from there. They want to dribble defenders and this is not working at all, so i'll kindly request the Coach "ODG" to contemplate more on shooting outside the box otherwise we'll always loose games just like that. Apart from that well done Mabhakabhaka ....

Firstly I would like to say congratulations to ODG and the boys the are playing their hearts out that what we enjoy to c when we paid our money to go to the stadium. Very concerned about Senzo he is a bit shaking in those poles. About the Captain belt Teko Modise is a good player but don’t have leadership skill since we have senior player who can handle it.

I am cosmos fan an very worried the way referee handled our game with pirates, pirates play well and fail to penetrate our defence an won the game late with help from the middle man, the game must be won on merrit. KLAAS SKOSANA -- VEZUBUHLE

Guys South Africa is in a process of preparing for world cup. So instead of demoralising our players, we must encourage them. If we see something wrong with Senzo Meyiwa or Exc Walaza, instead of criticizing we better advice them on how to better their standard bcos I know is easier said than done.
This are the 2010 players, so lets work with them. Dony

UP THE BIRDS
Swallows shows caracter on the day and shows chiefs that they are the same team like any other team, an I dont know what is muhshin gonna complain with this time since swallows got 2 red card, stop complaining muhsin an do your work,
our commentator keep on making mistake about swallows beating chiefs for the first time, stop misleading the nation swallows beat chiefs last with Mame Niang scoring the only goal, an Gavin Hunt was the coach and again last week they were saying Hunt never beat chiefs as coach. Cosmos players when in the hell are you gonna stop destroying other players' careers. I think pirates must open 'serious body harm' case against this cosmos guys. What do they think of the physical pain their player has inflicted on Mdledle and Chenene. Its time psl DC intervines. We are fed up of this SMACK DOWN wrestling show by cosmos.
