Maritzburg United beat Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 17 April 2012 Time: 21:14

A late goal by Cuthbert Malajila gave Maritzburg United all three points against Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane – in the process putting a massive dent in the Soweto giants’ title ambitions.

Zimbabwean Malajila chased down a long ball and showed great composure and strength to hold off Jimmy Jambo and then Dominic Isaacs before beating Itumeleng Khune with a deft toe poke.

The classy 74th-minute strike was enough to separate the two sides who, up until then, did not really look like scoring.

This was Maritzburg’s first League win away from home all season and debutant Ryan de Jongh will long remember the night in he put in a star performance as a makeshift left back.

Captain Kurt Lentjies hit the upright with an early free-kick before they felt they had a good penalty decision turned down when Felix Obada’s cross seemed to strike Tefu Mashamaite's hand.

Chiefs’ best scoring chance of the opening half came when Abia Nale cut in from the right and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike which Shuaib Walters pushed onto the crossbar.

After the break Chiefs came out with more purpose, but by now Maritzburg were set up really well and defended with determination and skill.

It was going to take something special to unlock their defence and Amakhosi could not come up with the goods in the final third of the field.

But in the 62nd minute Amakhosi also had a penalty decision turned down when Bernard Parker fired in a first time shot only to see the ball strike Peter Petersen on his hand.

Late in the game Dominic Isaacs’ header flew wide of the post and Khune’s free-kick attempt from a very good position flew wide of goal.

Makhosi like I said We have hit rock bottom. We just need to prepare for the next season. Let;s just hope that Bobby will come to his senses and start making good decisions. Maybe we needed to go thru this hell. We shall regroup.

We need to get a proper coach and Ace Khuse will go back to his translating duties. How on earth does he leave Nale so long when the guy was playing such kak.

We need to get at least five players and get rid of players like Nale, Ngcobo, Jambo and Lebese.

Tolly,.....What Khune showed was a sign of leadership and class, he's the finest keeper by far locally, with Sandilands close on his heels, then the python mouthed Domkat number last.

Hard luck Makhosi.

That ugly blind fool called Brian "Twenty Goggles" Mathe despises Sundowns, I hate him too. Nx.

I mean even that team from Castle League (not even Vodacom League) that lost twenty-four nil to Flops can fancy their chances against this team yet they want to put themselves on the level of mighty OPFC.

So unfortunate about weekend penalty & another one 2day.

None the less there in no hunger in this players.

The family should announce a new coach now to let go of extras in the team.

Down and down we go not that I did not expect it. When we called VV the Special One was because he turned nothing to at least something. Now that he is gone no one and I repeat no one can take this team anywhere. I think coaches will not even attempt to submit their cv's to Chiefs. We deserve the downward spiral and those who were calling for VV's head ..... well what is done is done Makhosi. Well to Pirates fans have a joll this is one joll you can't to afford to make a meal of and remember we can't even beat Sundowns and you know what that means, your hopes.
