Maritzburg United beat Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 17 April 2012 Time: 21:14

A late goal by Cuthbert Malajila gave Maritzburg United all three points against Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane – in the process putting a massive dent in the Soweto giants’ title ambitions.

Zimbabwean Malajila chased down a long ball and showed great composure and strength to hold off Jimmy Jambo and then Dominic Isaacs before beating Itumeleng Khune with a deft toe poke.

The classy 74th-minute strike was enough to separate the two sides who, up until then, did not really look like scoring.

This was Maritzburg’s first League win away from home all season and debutant Ryan de Jongh will long remember the night in he put in a star performance as a makeshift left back.

Captain Kurt Lentjies hit the upright with an early free-kick before they felt they had a good penalty decision turned down when Felix Obada’s cross seemed to strike Tefu Mashamaite's hand.

Chiefs’ best scoring chance of the opening half came when Abia Nale cut in from the right and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike which Shuaib Walters pushed onto the crossbar.

After the break Chiefs came out with more purpose, but by now Maritzburg were set up really well and defended with determination and skill.

It was going to take something special to unlock their defence and Amakhosi could not come up with the goods in the final third of the field.

But in the 62nd minute Amakhosi also had a penalty decision turned down when Bernard Parker fired in a first time shot only to see the ball strike Peter Petersen on his hand.

Late in the game Dominic Isaacs’ header flew wide of the post and Khune’s free-kick attempt from a very good position flew wide of goal.

We have been told that there is no way that Chiefs can lose two matches in a row. The same lie will be repeated again next year and the year after. The gullible keep on repeating the same lies.

We will emulate Pirates this season. That was sister Tau's words in da begining of da season. No confidence in the bench,on da field and da players are not hungry at all. Gorilla is da missing link. No depth and quality but Bobby is in denial. Once and always...........since 1937, Up the Bucs!

I concur, until these bunch of morons admit and realize that the mighty OPFC rule and most importantly that their team is full of cows nothing will go their way.

Just, for one, compare Parker to McCarthy. Can't say about Masango and Rantie. And yet people keep on saying they can compete with us...what a classical dream or should I say...a classical joke.

Hola Makhosi. We have hit rock bottom. From here we can only go one way. Sometimes when sh*t happens it just happens. Yes, we didn't play the best football but still we deserved to win this match. Sometimes you need a bit of luck in soccer and we just don't have it never mind the poor football we are dishing out. Maritzburg parked the bus the whole 90 mins but what can we say. If you win against Chiefs it doesn't matter how you win.
