Orlando Pirates top of the log after beating Jomo Cosmos

Posted: 9 April 2012 Time: 19:50

A 92nd minute goal from second half substitute Rudolph Bester took Orlando Pirates to the top of the League table in a dramatic 2-1 win over Jomo Cosmos at Orlando Stadium on Monday night.

An early goal from Bongani Ndulula was cancelled out by Siyabonga Nhlapo before Bester scored a late winner with virtually the last touch of the ball.

It was the perfect start for the home side as Ndulula gave them the lead after only four minutes.

The Buccaneers striker concluded a swift passing movement with a clinical finish from six-yards out to give Pirates the early ascendancy, 1-0.

Shell-shocked by the home side’s blistering start, Cosmos struggled to get hold of the ball early on and could only watch as Pirates stroked the ball around the park with confidence and precision.

In the 24th minute Cosmos’ hard-work paid off as they found a superb equaliser through the boot of Siyabonga Nhlapo.

The Cosmos man picked up the ball in space 30-yards out from goal and unleashed a thunderbolt which found the top left-hand corner of the goal, 1-1.

After surrendering their lead, Pirates picked up the pace of the game and began dictating the flow once more.

Still, they struggled to break down a resolute Cosmos defence and had to resort to shooting from long range.

The closest the Buccaneers came, however, to scoring a second in the first-half came a minute before the halftime break when Thabo Matlaba brought the best out of Avril Phali.

Matlaba let loose from 25-yards out, but Phali was quick to react making a good save to deny the Pirates man.

The second 45 minute continued where the first left off and Oupa Manyisa was the first to try his luck form distance, but much like his compatriots his 30-yard shot in the 66th minute sailed over the crossbar.

Six minutes later and Thulasizwe Mbuyane should have given Pirates the lead for the second time, but he squandered his chance heading over from close range after meeting a right-wing cross.

The Buccaneers captain squandered another golden opportunity to take the lead in the 80th minute when Lucky Lekgwathi fired wide from six-yards out after latching onto the end of a good passing movement.

Pirates continued to throw men forward and it looked like they were destined to share the spoils with Cosmos, but a late, late strike from substitute Rudolph Bester, from 25-yards out, found the top right-hand corner of the net, 2-1.

The result takes the Buccaneers to the summit of the League, at least until Black Leopards host Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night.

For Cosmos, they remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

@Magebhula you are right my brother remind them that 8 years is better than 12 years. It took others 12 years to win the league yet they are making noise.

@TZOZO.

All your views are just opinions, your statement is full of "ifs". You are also pessimistic of your own team & trying your best to drag everyone to your world. You now see flops winning to leopards, just like you saw chips winning to leopards in a league game. You also see Pirates losing to swallows. With you , you only see a smooth path for flops, while no success at all for Pirates & you want all of us to think like you. We aint you, thus wont think like you. We are on top, are you?

@Liesbeck... Dankie Juju, I cud not have said it beta myslf... I lyk dis part "you want all of us to think like you. We aint you, thus wont think like you."

It was good to see Ndulula bulldoze his way to score like a typical striker, its that type of arrogance that makes a good striker. I am however concerned with his role when playing alongside Rantie. He is an obvious substitute for Mc Carthy but need to understand his role and that way he won't fade.

Firstly I noticed that instead of playing holding role for Rantie, he wanted to compete for outright striker role, that's not his style and he must stick to playing within his strength, he is not as quick as Rantie and not as sharp as Mc Carthy in front of goals but he can play a supporting role for Rantie and he will be surprised by similar goal scoring opportunities he will get for himself.

As for our defence, Lekgwathi and Sangweni, they must stop trying to be heroes and waste opportunities in the process. I have no problem with them inside the box on set pieces but really, this Lekgwathi is becoming a nuisance every time he insists to take set pieces, when last did they result into a goal, he must leave that to experts. Remember our winner against Swallows, he wanted to take the set piece but Mc Carthy insisted to take it and the rest was history, we not scoring tries here, this is futbol.

Overall, well played boys

Thanks God most Chibuku fans are illiterate taxi drivers who don't own computers. Adawise this blog would be full of morons writing all sorts of rubbish celebrating a lucky win against poor Cosmos.

My fellow buccaneers, plz don't waste your energy on tzozo. He already knows that his mediocre team will never win the league. The race is between sundows, bucs and swallows, and tzozo is advised to sort out the family business

I have been following your postings with interest. As much as you have a good footballing brain your postings are disgusting. Firstly let me remind you that Taxi drivers are just normal people just like you and me maybe even much better than yourself. Secondly let me remind you about the recent incident that happened in Bree Taxi Rank where those two girls were harassed for wearing mini skirts- who was wearing the zebra t-shirt? The same Taxi drivers who buy your merchandise. Thirdly as much as you would like your team to win the league, they must start winning games and forget about other teams doing favours for you. "If Swallows, if Sundowns, if whoever". Let your team do the job in the field of play for 90 min not 89 min. Pirates play for 90 min not 89 min. It's game on!!!
