Mamelodi Sundowns held by Bloemfontein Celtic

Posted: 28 March 2012 Time: 21:34

Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 0-0 draw at the Botshabelo Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Tshwane side, who were overwhelming favourites to win the match, started well and did all the attacking but they fluffed a numbers of opportunities created.

Their free-flowing style of play certainly asked a few questions of the home teams' defence early on, especially down the right flank where Anthony Laffor and Siyabonga Ngubane combined to orchestrate a few probing raids.

Katlego Mphela had the first chance for Sundowns as early as the fourth minute, but volleyed over the bar from only 10 yards out. Six minutes later the Bafafa Bafana striker had a great chance to open the scoring after leaving Thabo Nthethe for dead, but his tame shot was easily gathered by Thabani Stemmer.

Celtic managed to fashion a few half chances, but Lennox Bacela and Phenyo Mongala both failed to provide any real problems for Calvin Marlin in the first half. The former connected with a great cross by Cecil Oerson in the 36th minute but he could not keep his header down, while the Botswana international's shot in the 43rd minute was saved by Marlin.

The score remained goalless at half-time.

Clinton Larsen's boys started the second stanza on the attack, and they were unlucky to see Jacky Motshegwa’s well-taken shot going inches off target in the 51st minute. Two minutes later, Nyasha Mushekwi’s shot from across the goal struck the woodwork and then went back into play.

Immediately after that, Sundowns almost broke the deadlock when their effort was cleared off the line by Tsietsi Mahoa.

From there onwards, it was an end-to-end stuff as both sides tried hard to get the goal in vain. Mphela found himself with some space in the area, however, he shot over the bar. He should have done better.

Celtic put good effort into the final 15 minutes of the game, but time and time again they lacked the spark up front needed to convert what were on occasion good build ups, into goals. Motshegwa and substitute Ruzaigh Gameldien could not believe their eyes when their efforts went slightly wide of goal.

In the end, the match ended in a stalemate as neither side managed to take their chances.

100% correct wena senkga yelo, cloudkop byz are going to kiss the cup, they are just warming up the first spot for other teams(Swallows, Pierats, Khosi). you must also take note that Selesele is the big team that can match the cloudkoppes. maybe you can make it to the finals of the Nedbank . . . why Pelembe starts from the bench? only yelos knows!

It's either our players are not champion minded or that they lack dedication and commitment: last night's game was a disgrace (the word is just an understatement): even the fourth division teams don't play like Sundowns played yesterday: the sad part is that, we have hope in this brand while ama players are just not concerned about the fans and the money that is put in this team: I said it before Nyasha and Killer are just like those watches that were called omucwayizeni, it's like they have ispring that keeps their momentum for few minutes: only the back four played yesterday, Moriri the less said the better, Kekana is a good player but his mind is not hundred percent on the game (you find him doing izinto zokuhlanya nje), our attacking midfielders have a very low confidence (I don't know if is that Laffor or maybe his clone), so it's high time this team come out of the comfort zone cos if we don't win the championship this year...there's a possibility that we won't on this age ever touch that Cup....we are still on top with of course faith being thin: Pirates like I said it before , they are very committed and that's what I fear about them while our players are on Dj's Sbu friends like these cruise: nxx....I sleep with a broken heart:

Mr Editor which game were you watching? It is Celtic who held Sundowns to a draw. They parked 11 buses in their mountanious box.

On the game, Killer once again missed a seater which might have cost us valuable points. I was the one who was saying abo Brazillito and Sweyts were harsh on him mara this chap seems no longer interested in banging them goals.

Laffor must equally pull up his socks phela our patience is running thin.

Fede hard luck Dawanas lets focus on the next game and collecting maximum points.

Sundoms are real Flops. Look this team has the most favourable lig fixture than all the ada 15 teams in the PSL and they are blowing it. Sundoms play a team who played Chiefs in their last fixture. We all know playing against Chiefs remain the hilite of evry soccer player in Mzansi. It is only against Chiefs that these playas play before a full house or near capacity crowd. The playas always give their all against Chiefs resulting in them getting physically drained for their nxt match against Doms. Doms had no bizniz drawiing againts teams lyk Cosmos, Wits and Celtic after their gruelling matches against Amakhosi. Sundoms you are blowing it big tym afta sum moron in the PSL gave u such a generous fixture all year round. Even if u end up winning the lig pls don't 4get ur gud fortune with the fixture.

U know I hav try not to criticise our players, special the new 1. Kodwa indaba ka Laffor iyangidina mina. I think the coach has given him fair chance, so angeke akhale if esebanga ama stands seats nama VIP fans. He just don't want to cum to the party. Unnecessary dribbling end with useless crosses when there is no Yellow jersey in the box.
When the coach start to bench akungakhalwa with sundowns is killing ama career abadlali

Powerline Fc have changed, take a look at the past 5 games you will realise that they slowed down. They no longer play good football and at times play 1 striker. Nicknakes is panicking big time with 8 games to go. Pirates have closed the gab. The gab is less than 1 match now. The league is building up to the climax, just like Ajax cried last season, Powerlines FC will cry this season.

@Tzozo, your favourite team doesn't know the endurance of staying on top of the league for 4 straight months, in simple terms that’s 9 straight unbroken runs of matches without being unseated. You don’t know what it takes to be number one, and also the fact that when you’re number one no team in PSL doesn’t wanna experience a loss against number one.

Our team played against Ajax Cape Town and won, so I dont understand what you base your arguments on. Kaizer Chiefs is actually making things difficult for our team since no team wants to lose or draw twice in row.

@Champ "Superbrand", there is nothing new here, Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. have accumulated enough points to remain top. There is no consistent team within the top 5 teams, so I don’t see any team dethroning our MEAN YELLOW MACHINE anytime soon.

Yellow Is The Way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yellow I Was, Yellow I Am & Yellow I Will Remain! [through and through]

Mr Sir Neeskens please bring back Musa Nyatama our jersey no 15 along with Pelembe Modise with Mokoena then choose mushekwi or Mphela but Mphela you costed the team 3 points.

its time you go back to the bench and come in for 20-25 min again please Sir neeskens.

While losses are evidence of loss in form for other team, for the yellow mean machine draws are. I would be lying if I said I feel threatend by bugs. Who's not going to drop point in this run?

I hate draws but a draw is still one point to the good.

I'll stay yellow 'till my soul touches the sky!
