Bidvest Wits draw with Mamelodi Sundowns

Posted: 13 March 2012 Time: 21:24

Bidvest Wits put a dent in Mamelodi Sundowns’ title hopes on Tuesday night by holding the log leaders to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Stadium.

Nyasha Mushekwi struck early for The Brazilians, but the Clever Boys claimed a draw thanks to a late equaliser from 17-year-old substitute Muhammed Patel.

Sundowns dominated the opening exchanges and it was no surprise when they took an 11th-minute lead through Mushekwi, who did well to tuck away a cross from Siyabonga Ngubane.

Wits recovered from the early set-back, though just before the half-hour mark they almost found themselves two goals down when Mushekwi got on the end of a cut-back from Lebohang Mokoena, but his header was well saved by Emille Baron.

Five minutes later Downs had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when David de Oliveira bundled Mushekwi over in the 18-yard area without getting any kind of contact on the ball, but the referee waved away the home side’s appeals.

Just before the break Wayne Sandilands was called into his first significant action, making an excellent double save to keep out successive shots from De Oliveira and Sibusiso Vilakazi.

Early in the second half it was Baron’s turn to show his excellent reflexes as he turned away a powerful header from Clayton Daniels, who had got up highest to meet a Teko Modise free-kick.

Four minutes later De Oliveira was mere inches away from bringing Wits level, hitting a thundering drive from 25 yards out which came back off the crossbar.

On 72 minutes the hosts needed another great save from Sandilands to keep themselves in the ascendancy as he parried away a curling effort from Sibusiso Vilakazi before a follow-up shot was cleared off the goal line by Method Mwanjali.

Sundowns’ inability to find a second goal came back to haunt them in the final minute of regulation time when Patel scored from close range, turning home a rebound after Sandilands could only parry Daylon Appolis’ free-kick.

Sundowns thought they had snatched the win at the death when Katlego Mphela forced the ball into the back of the net, but he was flagged offside and the ‘goal’ was scratched off.

@Thabo,

Saying Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. was OUTCLASSED is overly exaggerating, yes Wits had their chances so did we. We, the YELLOW CITIZENS are so used to dominance, mesmeric football and 3 points that you would mistake a below par performance for being outclassed. So in my opinion we had a substandard game, and it was more painful cause we lost 2 points in the nineth minute.

@Sweyts,

The team's performance as whole lacked the necessary spark, I don't believe singling out players, especially Katlego Mphela, would do the morale of the YELLOW NATION any good, please remain optimistic cause the where positives to draw from this game. I SAW THE PELEPELE I FELL IN LOVE and also remember that Wits equalised in the 90th minute via a dubious free kick.

The league title shall be YELLOW, it wont be easy, but we must remain YELLOW & upbeat.

I REPEAT: the gap shall remain YELLOW!

Yellow Is The Way!

Yellow I Was, Yellow I Am & Yellow I Will Remain! (DEFIANT 24 TIMES)

Now dat da chips are down let's if Napkins is really a good coach, let's c if he cn lift da players' spirits & gt dem bck to winning ways...

I always said that dis tym will cum & it's only when we'll see if he's a good coach 4 real coz in da 1st half of da czin he was leveraging on da players pushing demslvs coz dey had a new coach & all of dem wanted to excel... Remeber the Nyatamas & Mphahleles of dis world? Nw some of dem r frustrated by da limited game tym dey r gtng & cracks r starting to show...

Soon we'll b asking the question: "what's da point of scoring 24 goals if u r nt gonna play in da final at the very least?"

Is the Sundowns ship hitting an iceberg?

The key in the 1st round was the ability for any player to score.
For me Mushekwi is also not ceasing this moment.

I said it b4 that Laffor is over valued to be swapped with cash & 2 players,some didn't believe me but he hasn't contributed anything for his former team in a while.

I hope Pirates doesn't win the league because the noise levels are going up already & if they occupy the top spot let's hope god is with us all.

Jst cn't believe that some ppl are blaming tha referee for the free kick. Rememeber the free kick is not a goal. The very same ppl were quick to jump when KC was complaining about the hand ball scored by the same Wits. So they are all begining to fall? 1st SSU then Sunclowns. Who's next? 2nd star FC then 2nd star FC again and few minutes later sunclowns again. So clearly after our game on saterday Amakhosi will be jst 1 point behind sunclowns with a game in hand. Hahahahaaaaaa
