Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United

Posted: 26 February 2012 Time: 17:30

Orlando Pirates moved up to third place in the League standings thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Maritzburg United at Orlando Stadium.

The Buccaneers needed a breath-taking goal from substitute Benni McCarthy in the 75th minute to defeat the 10-man Team of Choice, who had defender Peter Petersen dismissed just past the hour-mark for a second bookable offence.

The victory puts Pirates level with Kaizer Chiefs on 33 points, while Mamelodi Sundowns still lead the way on 36 points.

Bucs started the match strongly and striker Ndumiso Mabena was presented with a great chance just four minutes in, but with only goalkeeper Francis Chansa to beat he blazed his effort over the crossbar.

The hosts dominated the first 20 minutes or so, but the visitors gradually got a foothold in midfield and began to create some opportunities of their own. The best arrived on 34 minutes when a long throw-in from Petersen went straight to Wayne Matle, but from close range the attacker completely missed the ball.

Matle then had a free header from Kurt Lentjies’s 45th-minute free-kick, but he failed to direct his header on target.

Bucs shuffled their pack upfront by introducing Thulasizwe Mbuyane in place of Mabena at the start of the second half, but apart from a glancing header from a corner that produced a straightforward save from Chansa, ‘Juju’ wasn’t able to stamp his authority on the game.

The first of two key moments arrived in the 63rd minute when Petersen deliberately handled the ball and was shown a second yellow card, followed by a red, by referee Zolile Mthetho.

With 15 minutes to play McCarthy took centre stage, peeling away from his marker Byrone Hendricks in the penalty area before meeting a cross with a brilliant overhead-kick that found the back of the net.

Maritzburg thought they had claimed a late equaliser deep into injury time when substitute Prince Olomu stabbed home from close range after Mor Diouf won a knock-down in the penalty area, but it was scratched out for offside – though TV replays suggested the Team of Choice were hard done by.

@Jones 2012-02-27 01:47 If you are realy a bucs fan then you are disapointing the ghost masrs.Yes a win is a win especially in cup final, unlike in lig games where perfomance is highly considered since its a marathorn tusk.Just ask your self why Krol was shown the door after winning us a record trebble?Ask your self what did Khoza say was the main reason to rop in Leal instead?Ofcourse he said he(Khoza)wanted an entertaining football which also Leal promised us but is failing to do it.Are you aware Khoza is already looking for Leal's replacement? You smell a zebra.Maybe if you can go to the sewer drain as soon as Dr Khoza find the right coach the better.

I think Thabo Matlaba is a more capable player on the left than Cloete so we shall have balance on the left back.I like his workrate, skill and shooting and even his passing game.

Mr Editor which TV replays are you reffering to? We also watched this match and listened to the Supersport analysist who also agreed there was a player on an offside position before the header was taken and the player was interacting with play even though he didn't head the ball. Please check your facts baba or else we will believe your biasness is showing in your reporting. Thank you

I'm a bit worried about our coach and his simmingly poor tatical know how. When Bic-Mac came into the Bucs camp, he introduced him slowly into the team, I assumed this was because he wanted Both the other players and Benni to get used to each others playing style, He has applied a totally different approat with Morte and this is not yielding results and it's frusting players in middle.

I suppose the only good thing about the coach is that ULIGWALA, yesterday the fans demanded that he put Benni in and the funniest thing, he started pacing up and down didn't know whether to cluch his chin or make that girlish clap
