Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns draw

Posted: 24 February 2012 Time: 21:57

Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns drew 2-2 in a League clash in Dobsonville on Friday night.

Both sides found themselves having to fight back from a deficit, and in the end a draw was probably a fair result, though the Brazilians will be disappointed at having missed out on the chance to move six points clear at the top of the table.

‘Downs dominated proceedings early on and forced two good saves from Greg Etafia – in the second minute he smothered the ball at the feet of Nyasha Mushekiw and a quarter hour later he tipped a long range shot from Hlompho Kekana over the crossbar.

However, Swallows soon worked their way into the game and began to create chances, the first of which saw Joseph Makhanya shoot wide of the target after a defence-splitting pass from Lefa Tsutsulupa on 19 minutes. A minute later Makhanya provided a clever low pass from the right that allowed Bennett Chenene to turn the ball home from close range and put the Birds 1-0 up.

On 22 minutes Swallows had a chance to extend their lead but David Mathebula opted for a difficult pass when he should have shot, allowing the opportunity to slip away. Sundowns went on to boss the remainder of the first half and were able to force an equaliser just before the interval.

On the stroke of half time Anthony Laffor provided a searching cross from the right flank. Lebohang Mokoena won a knock-down at the far post and Nyasha Mushekwi reacted quicker than Etafia and defender Ashraf Hendricks, beating the two Swallows players to the ball and heading home to make it 1-1.

Mushekwi very nearly put the Brazilians in the lead four minutes after the restart, unleashing a fiercely-hit drive that forced Etafia into another excellent reaction save. However, there was nothing the goalkeeper could do to stop Teko Modise making it 2-1 to the visitors on 57 minutes after he provided a side-footed finish from Kekana’s great through ball.

Yet Sundowns’ were pegged back just a minute later when Makhanya scored his first goal for the Birds, arriving late at the far post to crash home Chenene’s cross from the left by-line and make it 2-2 before the hour mark.

Sundowns looked the likelier scorers in the remainder of the match, especially through the ever-dangerous Mushekwi, who forced another good stop from Etafia from a headed effort on 83 minutes, but the match ended all square and the teams shared the points.

I said it that others are like the Proteas...CHOKERS!

Just witness this evening when bite the dust from Wits and we'll b number 2/3 by end of this round of games (tomorrow night).

When often I said that the league is a marathon not a sprint people thought we were insane, others referred to us as jealous, others referred to us as bankrupt in football knowledge...now this is happening, I wonder where are they and what are they saying.

The second round of the league is always crucial and you must not be caught leaving in the first round's success and think the second will be obvious...that's where boys are separated from men. The games go on!

What a game, what a result. A draw equals two points lost, which is good news for the chasing pack but very bad news for the YELLOW citizens. The game against Moroka Swallows was there for the taking, but we lacked the much needed sense of urgency to finish it, which lead to the failure of collecting maximum points.

With that said, all is not lost, after this weekend, irrespective of how the other results go we shall remain on top cause of the good points we've collected throughout the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. shall be crowned the 2011/12 champions, it's not gonna be easy, but we're a championship team, we've scored the goals and we've won the games to be on top. What we must realise is that our opponents are really upping their games so our boys need to triple their performance.

Chances must be buried, we can't always be lamenting coming close game after game. Mushekwi is a marvel to watch, I would like for him to be on the starting eleven cause he makes the team utterly edgy. As for the defence and midfield I wasn't impressed at all, we lost the ba//s cheaply.

I remain YELLOW and HOPEFUL even though the last three games have been very tough for us.

Yellow Is The Way!

Yellow I Was, Yellow I Am & Yellow I Will Remain! (through and through)

Khumalo is my favourite left back and Punch is simply overrated. Punch's marking is pathetic and we have to rely on him, come the end of the season we'd be empty handed. Mwanjali is not a defender, period!

Ah well, this is to be expected. Sundowns is not choking, they are readapting and regroup which is a self imposed position stemming from continuous buying and changing of the team. Just imagine starting Pelembe from in the bench. Pure confusion with too many players(stars) playing alike. Sundowns WILL not win the league. By the time they regroup again other teams will have cought up with them.
