Orlando Pirates beat Black Leopards

Posted: 15 February 2012 Time: 21:37

Orlando Pirates started the second half of the season on a winning note, beating Black Leopards 1-0 at Orlando Stadium.

An early Thulasizwe Mbuyane goal was all that separated the teams as Bucs put up a pretty uninspiring performance, but did enough to hold out for the three points against a Leopards team that never had enough in attack.

Pirates started the match strongly and could have opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute when Benni McCarthy set up Siyabonga Sangweni with a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper, but the defender missed his attempted volley.

As it was, Bucs took the lead just three minutes later. Right-back Bheki Nzunga provided a great cross and Mbuyane buried a bullet header into the top corner.

On the quarter-hour mark Pirates should have made it 2-0 as Lucky Lekgwathi had a free header from a corner-kick, but the skipper completely mis-timed his effort and the ball bounced wide.

As the half wore on Pirates lost their early sharpness and rhythm, allowing Leopards to come into the game more. However, apart from a half chance for Benedict Vilakazi – where the midfielder hesitated when presented with a shooting chance – the visitors hardly troubled Bucs’ backline.

Leopards made a double change early in the second half, sending on Humphrey Khoza and Rodney Ramagalela. The tactical shuffle certainly saw the Limpopo team up their game in attack, though they were unable to create any clear scoring chances.

Pirates continued to look disjointed in attack, though another good cross from Nzunga handed Mabena a scoring chance from which the forward placed a diving header straight at the keeper, while Rooi Mahamutsa also had a header from a corner sail over.

@King i like your thinking.....pity some Juju are really behaving like id!ots.....we won and lets celebrate, focus on positive instead.
This obsession about Mabena is irritating now....the boy is working very hard for the team and good for the system we are playing.

Can we now just be happy and stop being makhala njalo

Excuse me there a bit Chomp Superbrand Nosi, you say this is Pirates and it's not like it's where again? Nc, ungazochoma, Sundowns is the only team that has fans who complain even after winning, you Barks are happy to win a trebble with 1-goal margins, playing kites mos?

Jy weet in The Champs league, this 1goal victory margin even at home will come back to bite ya'll esses.

@Sweyts,

Eish yellow man, i dont have time for Bafana Bastlaela!!! my energy was drained by my team yesterday. Why do you think Kroll had to walk after winning 3 trophies in one season? At Pirates you have to win and win with style. We gave Kroll a year and we complained about his style for two years. Tell us about your Sundowns, I had you won with a srappy own goal and you were nearly reduced to minnows as Amazulu ran riot against you only failing to take their chances.

Some of u 4get dat Leal ws employed 2 win while playing gud soccer.Krol's contract ws not renewd bcoz the team was wining in a "boring fashion".The reason why most fans at the stadium get frustrated is cozd by the high expactancy of gud futball as promised by Leal.
WHY Do we see empty seats at Orlando even tho the team has won all cups????

I can only say the coach's tactic is to play with wingers hence he puts more emphasis on wing playing by putting Mbuyane, Klate and also Mabena who most of the time drifts inside from the wings and that has worked for us, well northwthstanding the fact that we don't score many goals.

Most of our goals come from the wings. Remember we are playing with Benny who, I guess, the coach instructs other players (wingers) to feed with those crosses for us to benefit. Mind you wingers I also include the full backs...let's not go far...just yesterday...the goal came from the full back who looped it the box and it was halakashaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

However, I fully concur and behind comments that seek to build and take the team to greater heights instead of irrational and unfair criticisms. This is our FAMILY therefore as stakeholders we ought to give inputs that build when we see somethng going wrong but let's not do that without being considerate of other factors.
