Mamelodi Sundowns beat AmaZulu 1-0 in Durban

Posted: 15 February 2012 Time: 22:17

Mamelodi Sundowns kept up their push for the Absa Premiership title with a 1-0 win away to AmaZulu on Wednesday night.

Lebohang Mokoena, who recently signed a new contract with The Brazilians, was the hero on the night, scoring the only goal of the game with 10 minutes to go.

Sundowns were the first to launch attacks, with Punch Masenamela’s dazzling overlapping runs looking dangerous during the early stages.

Teko Modise had the first shot of the game in the sixth minute but it sailed over the bar, and that was followed by AmaZulu’s first threatening attack which saw Tshweu Mokoro try to play a through ball to the on-running Ayanda Dlamini, but he arrived late.

As the clock wound down in the first half, most of the play had taken place at the heart of the field and the goalkeepers had less to do, only called into action when taking goal kicks.

In the second half, the sides came out of the changing rooms with different tactics. Sundowns were the first to surge forward, once again with the blistering pace of Masenamela, but AmaZulu’s defence were up to the standard and managed to clear.

Ayanda Dlamini’s cross was then superbly cleared by Surprise Moriri, which resulted in a corner that Senamela sent in only for Dlamini to head wide.

In the 50th minute, a cross by Themba Zwane was well matched by Katlego Mphela’s header from centre of penalty area but a comfortable save by Tapuwa Kapini kept the sides locked at 0-0.

Debutant Anthony Laffor came on in the second half and sprinkled more life into Downs’ game as his speed and skill down the left flank meant more trouble for the Usuthu defence.

In the 79th minute the goal finally came; Themba Zwane’s cross was well tucked home by Mokoena from the six yard box.

After the goal, Sundowns looked revived as they threw waves of attack at the home side, with Laffor and Mokoena proving to be serious trouble down the flanks.

Moses Chavula should have leveled matters in the 82nd minute but was superbly denied by Moriri, who put his body on the line to concede a corner.

The coach blundured big time by realising Khanyenza. Despite his displinary problems , he formed a deadly combination with Nyasha.Mphela is lazy and might cost us the league. He did so last season by going AWOL and he doesnt seem to care.

What was that IDIOT Thomas Mlambo trying to say when he discribed the own goal as a ' dubious goal'? Needs to go back to school. We definately need to resume the league nge 3 points.Well done boys.

Mphela is lazy, he must sit on the bench until his ups his work rate, Mushekwi should be our main man upfront.

Kamashobana, broer, what about the shallow commentators? If I'm not mistaken it was Thabiso Tema and I think Shongwe ngamehlo amakhulu ngathi ama-light we bhasi.....they hate us so much it's not funny.

When Pelepele was subbed, that b'astard TT said el qoute: "His pockets must've been too heavy for him tonight"! Grrrrr. Shongwe even told him on air that it was a little bit harsh and below the belt, anyway no one will stop us in our quest for the 6th one.

Yellow namanje!

I'm happy that Mabhuti Khanyeza, Matthew Pattison and Franklin Cale are gone from the team. CALL ME NAIVE, but I believe DOWNS is a BETTER team without them.

I'm also happy about the performance of the team, the long break took its toll, however the necessary business was carried out by the boys. Now I can't wait for the match against Jomo Cosmos this weekend.

Starting off the second round by beating your hoodo team is not a bad result by any standard. Yes, Mphela was not quite there, but so was Themba Zwane. I haVe seen him play better this season. On that note, I hope we have Kekana back, by the time we play Cosmos.

Guys Downs played very well. Mphela will do well on Sunday. You can't blame him for yesterday, no guys. We collected three vital points from KZN and it is difficult for other teams to collect three points in KZN. Mphela will score goals against Cosmos come Sunday. Please guys let's support him to win Golden Boots Award.
